I was looking through older portions of this forum and found DracoDei's unfinished Accursed Conductor (See here: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=4673834&postcount=13). I like it but it's neither complete nor exactly rules compliant. So after conferring with him, he's graciously allowed me to finish this. I see the cursed conductor more as an NPC than as a monster to be defeated.

The original name of the bard who became the accursed conductor has been blotted from the records of history by the hand of the one who laid the curse on him. All that is known is that his skill was surpassed only by his pride. It is said that he was challenged to a contest of music by the greatest Trumpet Archon ever to exist. In fact, it is known he was challenged and the only dispute of the matter is whether it might not have been an avatar of Corellon Larethian himself who challenged him.

Knowing the risks of outdoing such a powerful being in a contest, he at first demurred, pleading that basis. Only when his challenger swore a mighty binding oath not to take vengeance on him for the results of the contest, whatever they might be, did the bard agree. They took it in turns to play. Almost every creature within a day's journey in every direction would have died of thirst from standing still in awe of the memory of those sounds for so long (and they did so for long after the melodies had faded), had not the challenger had mercy on them and rendered them never to need bite nor sup nor sleep ever again.

It is known that the elven bard won that contest, although some say his challenger lost intentionally. The challenger heaped blessings on the elven bard, praising him greatly, and then asked on favor to test his true weakness... he asked the privilege of being allowed to perform a short duet with the bard... the bard refused, saying that as he had won the contest by a great margin it only proved that his music would only be debased by being mixed with that of a lesser musician. The challenger begged him with sweet words as a respect for their mutual devotion to music to grant the challenger this boon and promised to grant even further blessings and to give him great gifts. The elf in his great pride still refused.

The challenger thanked him for the contest again, and gave him a cloak in further gratitude. The bard donned it immediately, and fell victim to the curse it was partially the vector for... never again would he make music directly, but only through the hands and voices of others, until he learned true humility and respect for those lesser than him. Until such time he would wander, silent and untouchable through the plains, force by his love of music to seek out others and teach them, and allow them to copy the scores he conjured up.

The accursed conductor appears as silent ghostlike elf wearing a pendant around his neck and a long cloak. He carries a rapier. He is shrouded in utter silence. Despite his appearance, the accursed conductor is very much alive though he has not aged since donning his cloak. While he can mouth words, only someone who can read lips can understand him. He understands all languages due to the Polyglot feat (see epic feats).

Bardic Knowledge: The accursed conductor may make a special bardic knowledge check with a bonus equal to his bard level + his Intelligence modifier + his +2 synergy bonus from his Knowledge (history) skill to see whether he knows some relevant information about local notable people, legendary items, or noteworthy places.

A successful bardic knowledge check will not reveal the powers of a magic item but may give a hint as to its general function. A bard may not take 10 or take 20 on this check; this sort of knowledge is essentially random.

DC Type of Knowledge
10 Common, known by at least a substantial minority of the local population.
20 Uncommon but available, known by only a few people legends.
25 Obscure, known by few, hard to come by.
30 Extremely obscure, known by very few, possibly forgotten by most who once knew it, possibly known only by those who don’t understand the significance of the knowledge.

Conjure Equipment (Su): As a standard action, the accursed conductor can create soundless instruments to demonstrate technique, musical scores for others to play or copy down, and other mundane items. Conjured equipment cannot be dispelled though it can be destroyed as normal equipment. Conjured musical equipment is always Masterwork quality. Anyone who plays on a conjured musical instrument gains a +2 Competence bonus to Perform checks. In a bard’s hands, conjured musical equipment also adds a +2 Competence bonus to Bardic Knowledge checks. Any item, other than musical instruments, created by the accursed conductor lasts 48 hours before crumbling into dust (this includes musical scores).

Forever Silent (Su): Only a deity rank 1 or higher is capable of rendering the accursed conductor corporeal or capable of making a sound. Ghost touch instruments fall silent at his touch, and in combat, the only sounds are that of his opponent striking at the air. Even if contacted telepathically, his communications come out as images rather than speech or any other type of sound.

Glorious Hearing (Ex/Su): The accursed conductor cannot be deafened by any mundane or magical means unless it is an ability of a deity of divine rank 1 or higher. Furthermore, the accursed conductor can dispel any number of silence spells an unlimited number of times per round as an immediate action provided the caster is not a deity of divine rank 1 or higher. He can hear any sound within a 100-foot radius and has a +10 Competence bonus on all Listen checks.

Immortal Accursed and Beloved (Ex): Due to his curse, the accursed conductor loses most of his bardic abilities. He retains only his bardic knowledge and spell-like abilities. He gains the Incorporeal Subtype. The accursed conductor no longer ages while he is so cursed. He gains the following: Skill Focus [Perform (Keyboard)], Skill Focus [Perform (Percussion)], Skill Focus [Perform (String)], Skill Focus [Perform (Wind)], and Skill Focus [Perform (Sing)] as bonus feats. He gains a +5 circumstance bonus to checks on Knowledge (Architecture and Engineering) when analyzing or designing acoustics. He adds his bardic class level to all his Knowledge checks not just bardic knowledge (See bardic knowledge above). He gains Spell Resistance equal to his bardic class level and immunity to sonic. He has blindsight 120 feet. He gains Damage Reduction 15/epic.

While cursed, the immortal conductor is incapable of telling anyone his name. He cannot write it, mouth it, or impart that knowledge in any way. It is as if he did not know it himself. Any attempt to magically, alchemically, mechanically or otherwise to gain that information automatically fails. The only way to reverse the curse is to ask the trumpet archon who laid it to remove it.

Spell-like Abilities (Sp): At Will—silence, 1/day—symbol of deafness (as per symbol of blindness, but causes deafness instead), 1/month — plane shift. All abilities are as a 21st level Cleric.
