As someone used to highly specific builds in DnD 3.5e, I have some thoughts stuck in the back of my mind about Pathfinder. Namely, what would you guys say is a "standard" wizard build? If anyone has enough time/cares to, I would like to see such a build at levels 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "standard" build, with so many classes and archetypes in this game.

Hmm... How about an "average" build then. Something that does not use all of the gouda but is practical at all levels and is capable of existing in a party without wholly invalidating everyone?

Attach spells to a dartboard and throw for your morning preparation. Chances are, you won't be useless. :smalltongue:

Sadly, I don't think this is the case. Even in Pathfinder, there's a metric ton of crap spells that are too circumstantial to be super-useful.

Now, if you limited that dart board to just Core spells, you'll probably be decentish. :smalltongue:

Ah, but chances are, you don't put sucky spells in your spellbook in the first place. :smallwink:

That's a fair point, but it doesn't help the OP figure out what spells to put in his spellbook.

My *standard* wizard is a divination (foresight) specialist, with a valet familiar and item creation feats.

Makes him a good team player, who can quickly throw a needed buff or control spell, as well as make the party's money stretch further.

If you don't want to invalidate other people, just be a buffer, battlefield controller, crafter and keep your other spells there just for emergencies. No save/die or even save/suck, no fireball (unless your party cannot otherwise deal with swarms).

Wizards aren't overpowered simply because they have so many great spells. They are overpowered because players USE all those great spells instead of showing a little restraint.

A crafting-focused buffing/control wizard is a good recommendation for most groups and optimization levels. If you absolutely need to solve an encounter (say, your martials have had a string of unlucky rolls) then you can do so and save the day - but for the most part you can remain content in a supporting role.
