Brief Introduction

MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust. The show's writing and production engendered a large fanbase outside of the intended target audience.

This long-running thread is not only a place to discuss MLP, both official releases and the vast array of fanworks, but has become a mini-community in and of itself.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> If I want to get into the show, where do I start?

A good starting point is to watch the episodes in order. The show is available on Netflixs in many countries, but, at a pinch, can usually be found with some searching one youtube or dailymotion. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily.

In the case of official MLP comics, ponthread policy is to always discuss them in spoilers, on the basis that, for example, ponythreaders in the UK do not get them until some weeks later.

Picard actually captains like a proper Star Fleet officer trying to explore strange new worlds and spread harmony to the galaxy. He is basically the princess of friendship before pony even existed. Because I kinda want to watch some pony, but there are a bunch of bad episodes in the latest season, or the episode tackled something that fanfics did first and better.

Sure, I'll give a two-to-three sentence description of each episode, and my opinion on each. I'll spoiler it so as not to annoy those who already know, and they will be in production order rather than airdate order, if it matters.
The Crystalling, (Parts I & II): Shiny and Cadance have a foal, who is inexplicably already an alicorn. Glimmer has a B-plot to reconnect with her old friend Sunburst. The baby accidentally destroys the Crystal Heart, but thanks to Sunburst's knowledge of obscure spells, the day is saved. My opinion: I don't usually participate in this aspect of fandom, but I ship StarBurst with the intensity of a thousand suns.

Gift of the Maud Pie: Rarity and Pinkie head to Manehatten as Rarity is looking for a location for a new boutique and Pinkie wants to buy a gift (a rock pouch) for Maud. She ends up having to trade away her party cannon for it, but Maud trades it back; If you've ever read The Gift of the Magi, you saw this coming a mile away. My opinion: Gee, Pinkie it's not like you know someone very skilled with fabric to make a rock pouch, that'd be silly. Ugh.

On Your Marks: The CMC have their cutie marks... now what? They try to just hang out and do stuff as a group, but they start pulling apart. Eventually (after helping a new colt named Tender Taps find his cutie mark, more on him in a bit), the CMC discover that it's okay to have hobbies that don't include all three of them, and that doesn't mean that they won't still be friends. My opinion: Not bad, but this is the second new character (OK, Sunburst was talked about/shown in flashback before, but he had no lines, so I say he counts as new) that seems to be created for shipping. He's also not the last. Okay episode, though.

Gauntlet of Fire: A good Spike episode. That should be enough. Seriously though, while helping Rarity, Spike gets a mystical summons to the Dragon Lands: It seems that the head of state, Dragon Lord Torch, has reached the end of his tenure, so he tasks all the young dragons (other than his daughter Ember (again, more on her in a bit)) to find the Bloodstone Scepter, which he tosses into a nearby volcano. Whoever returns with the scepter will become the new Dragon Lord. Taking a page out of Wonder Woman's book, Ember disguises herself in armor and joins the hunt anyway. Eventually, she teams with Spike (who's only interested in making sure Garble doesn't win, as he said he'd declare war on Equestria), who in the end gives the scepter to Ember, trusting her to rule. My opinion: That recap was longer than I intended. Hmm. Anyway, 3rd new character almost designed for shipping. Though as I said, good Spike episode; that should be enough.

No Second Prances: Twilight tasks Glimmer with making a new friend. After some antics, she meets, and subsequently makes fast friends with, Trixie. Twilight then tries to make Glimmer befriend anypony else, showing a rather negative aspect of her personality, really. Eventually, Twi admits that even if she doesn't particularly like Trixie, she has to respect that Glimmer does. My Opinion: Twi seems almost vindictive in this episode; why is Glimmer worthy while Trixie isn't? Trixie's crimes are being a braggart (while performing as a magician) and being influenced by an ancient artifact. Glimmer's crimes include brainwashing a town and almost destroying Equestria through bucking with the time stream! Not a fan of this one.

Newbie Dash: Rainbow finally gets promoted to official member of the Wonderbolts (she was just a reservist previously), but embarrasses herself on her first day and gets a horrible nickname because of it. She spends the rest of the episode trying to get called other things (and going through more and more elaborate plans to do so). eventually, they tell her that everyone in the Wonderbolts has an embarrassing nickname; it's part of the comradery of the group. My opinion: This is another "this could have been avoided really easily" plot. The antics are fun, though, so there's that.

A Hearth's Warming Tale: You know how Equestria's 4th of July/how-we-became-a-nation holiday is in winter? Let's ignore that and make it a Christmas analogue by telling A Christmas Carol: Pony Edition. Seriously, there's a framing device on how Glimmer doesn't see the fuss about the holiday, but that's what it is. My opinion: I'm Jewish, so I'm annoyed when Christmas is shoved down my throat when it's November. This aired in May. Do the math.

The Fault in Our Cutie Marks: This episode introduces Gabby: the most cheerful griffon in all of fiction. Basically, since ponies live in harmony and have cutie marks, she determines the former is due to the latter and asks the CMC to give her a cutie mark. They can't; it's just not part of griffon biology, but they try to help her anyway. Turns out she's really good at helping; doesn't seem to matter what, either. They go to apologize that they failed, but she shows up with a cutie mark! It's fake, obviously, in a "I didn't want to disappoint you" scenario, but it all ends with them giving her a pair of cutie mark-style decals for her saddlebags and throwing her a cuteceañera anyway. My opinion: Gabby is really cute, and they don't do a cop-out "You really did get a cutie mark!" ending. All in all, I like it.

The Saddle Row Review: Rarity has opened her new boutique and goes to read the review that will make-or-break her new business. We then cut back to the story's author (who is such an obvious J Jonah Jameson expy it hurts) interviewing the rest of the Mane 6 on how the opening went. We get a lot of The Office-style cut-to-the-interview segments as the story is told. After all the trials in getting the boutique open in time, Rarity gets a great review. My opinion: Easily one of the top 3 episodes of the season. Tons of fun has a nice flow. I really like it.

Applejack's Day Off: Applejack has trouble finding time to go to the spa with Rarity, as she has tons of chores, so Twi and Spike offer to do them while she does. While at the spa, they can't use the steam room because the spa workers can't get enough steam, and they give their patrons warm towels while they wait. Turns out they have a leak, which is exacerbated by them using the heat for the towels. Unfortunately, this eats up all the time they had and she heads back, only to find that her chores/routine has a bunch of unnecessary steps and by getting rid of them, she can free up more time to spend with her friends. My opinion: I have two theories on this episode: A) this is a genetic condition, as it's similar to Granny Smith' weird techniques in finding out how Zap Apples grow, or B) it's contrived nonsense. Take your pick.

Flutter Brutter: Goon news: We get to meet Fluttershy's family. Bad news: Her brother, Zephyr Breeze, is a lazy braggart. Fluttershy takes him in and tries to get him gainful employment, but it turns out that his boasting is covering up a crippling fear of failure. Eventually, they get him to finish his studies (in mane styling, if you care) and get him back on his feet. My opinion: Remember how I said a bunch of new characters seemed to be introduced just for shipping purposes? Zephyr seems like anti-shipping; he's annoying, self-centered, and convinced Dash is insterested in him dispite all evidence to the contrary. I was "meh" about it, myself.

Spice Up Your Life: Twi and Glimmer finally fix the cuite map, and find a mission for Rariyt and Pinkie. When they arrive, they stop for lunch, but all the high-class resturants Rarity heads to serve the same bland food. They find an out-of-the-way resturant that serves Indian-style cuisine and the try to help promote it, but end up turning it into another bland copy before realizing that they fix it. My opinion: The food critic/rater Zesty Gourmand just beat out Ms. Harshwinny at being an unlikable jerk. At least Harshwinny has professionalism. Also, Rarity, this is, what, the 8th time you tried interacting with "high class" ponies only to find out they're pompous jerks? Get a clue!

Stranger Than Fan Fiction: Rainbow attends a Daring Do convention and meets Quibble Pants (voiced by Patton Oswald), who is a huge fan of the series... at least the first 3 volumes. Eventually, they get attacked by Caberleron and pulled into an adventure, which Quibble seems to think it's made up at first (Remember, most peopole think 'Do is fictional). Eventually, they figuer out the puzzles and save the day, with Quibble saying it's okay to only like part of a series/ like it for different things. My opinion: While quibble gets shipped with Dash, he's not a "made for shipping" character; he's an anology for all the "RUINED FOREVER!" crowd. Also, there is a Daring Do body pillow. Where she is tied up. Yeah.

The Cart Before The Ponies: The class are having a boxcart derby, and the CMC get AJ, Dash and Rarity to help, but they go overboard and take over the project. They lose the race, but their designs win other awards. My opinion: An apt title, as winning the cart race had them ignore previous character development. You can safely skip this one, really.

28 Pranks Later: Remember "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well"? Same idea, but a) it was due to a pranking spree rather than Rainbow getting full of herself, b) she was asked to stop, but refused, and c) the entire town got together and pulled a zombie prank back at her. My opinion: Better executed than the original and fun. I liked it, though some feel it was a better fit for Season 1 or 2 Dash as opposed to 6.

The Times They Are A Changeling: Twilight, Glimmer and Spike head to the Crystal Empire (to visit Flurry Heart (the baby) and Sunburst) when they discover the entire empire is on high alert; seems that there's a changeling on the loose. Spike is tasked to help find it and sends the group of guars in different directions before falling into a cave and meeting said changeling. His name is Thorax, and he truly wants to be friends with the ponies. There are some antics and he is spotted. Spike is paralyzed by indesicion and initially says nothing, but then immediately gets Thorax and returns with him and vouches for him. After Twi says it's good enough for her, Shiny and Cadance welcome him into their court. My opinion: I like Thorax. Spike gets a neat song. There's an allusion to The Marx Brothers. It's neat.

Dungeons and Discords: While the Mane 6 are off on an assignment to Yakyakistan, Spike invites Discord to his and Big Mac's "Guys' Night". He is dissapointed to find out it's an Oubliettes & Ogres (read: D&D) game. There's some tension between the three, but it all works out in the end. My opinion: While discord did some "rewrite reality so they LARP the game, the previews made it look much more than it was. Also, Spike, it's not healthy to make your GMPC a self-insert. All in all, it was fun, but it could have been better.

Buckball Season: AJ and Dash recruit Fluttershy and Pinkie ito helping them find a unicorn for a game of Buckball, which needs one of each race for some reason. While they find a unicorn (Snails, believe it or not), it's clear that Flutters and Pinkie are naturals for the game and have them take their place. Unfortunatly, they seem to snap under the pressure, but AJ and Dash fix it soon enough. My opinion: Very not bad. It seems wierd that Fluttershy is better at a sport than Dash, but it works.

Viva Las Pegasus: The cutie map sends Fluttershy and Dash to Las Pegasus in order to find a cutie mark problem. They find Flim and Flam there, and the two argue. AJ wants to find someone else to help, but eventually they work with them, seems Gladstone, the proprieter of the hotel is playing everyone against each other while claiming to be their friend, They eventually trick him into revealing himself, and it all goes downhill for him. My opinion: Gladstone's last scene makes this okay instead of really good. Upon realizing that his scheme is undone and he's lost everything, he runs out crying. What I wanted to happen is him to lunge at Fluttershy for ruining everything, only to get bucked by AJ. It just feels incomplete.

Every Little Things She Does: Glimmer is way behind on her friendship reports, so she tries to do everything at once. Once it's clear that isn't going to work, she brainwashes everyone and tries again. It still doesn't work and it backfires horribly. They eventually forgive her, though. My opinion: Let's just say that if Glimmer pulled that on me, she wouldn't have to worry about freindship problems as much as "running away from me/hoping I don't find her" problems.

PPOV: A fun cruise with Rarity, Pinkie and AJ fails, and each blames the other in this Roshomon-stlye story. My opinion: Seeing the three being wildly out of character is funny and seeing Twi try to solve it is fun. The last 3 minutes/ the solution make no sense, though.

Where the Apple Lies: Applejack tells a story where her well-meaning lies almost cost everything. My opinion: I did not like this episode for several reasons: 1) the plot gets annoying when AJ digs herself deeper and deeper, 2) Big Mac won't shut up, thus ruining his later stoic personality, and 3) this story is set several years ago, before Applebloom was born, yet there isn't even a handwave of where AJ's parents are.

Top Bolt: Dash and Twi head to Wonderbolts HQ because of the cutie map and meet 2 potential recruits: the shy Vapor Trail and the brash Sky Stinger. Turns out Vapor has been helping Stinger by making tailwinds for him, and he never noticed. There's some drama there, but eventually they work things out and enter the academy. My opinion: Sky Stinger is annoyingly cocky. I was practically begging Dash to humble him, but it never happened. It was okay, otherwise.

To Where and Back Again (Parts I & II): Glimmer gets an invite back to Our Town, and takes Trixie with her, as Twi suggested she take a friend (meaning her). When they return, everyone is acting wierd. Turns out, while they were gone, the entire Mane 7 has been kidnapped and replaced with changelings. Glimmer gets Trixie, Thorax (who came on Sunburst's behest as they attacked the Empire too) and Discord (who was meh about the whole thing until they mention Fluttershy was taken). They head to the Chegling Kindom to rescue them, but Chrysalis' throne blocks all non-changeling magic, meaning that only Thorax's magic still works. Eventually, they lose Discord (who was paralyed with indescision with the sight of dozens of Fluttershys) and Trixie (who makes a sacrifice play). and they pull a good switch with Glimmer and Thorax, but eventually Chrysalis gets Thorax and tries to pull the loveout of him. By sharing it with her, it causes a incredible transformation (as you see on the front page) and Chrysalis is defeated. Glimmer offers to spare/redeem her, but she refuses and heads off. My opinion: I liked it, and it contains an important message: Befriending Spike is good for your career, as this makes the third foreign head of state that he is freinds with. I forsee a career in diplomacy for the young drake.

There was a book called "Kobiashi Maru" which showed the attempts by four of the cast to take the test, and the affect the test had on them. The Kirk one is pretty poor, but the remaining three are quite good and thought provoking.

Because, for reasons which I CANNOT fathom, it WILL NOT assemble the A7V, despite the fact that the right hand side is a mirror (left-to-right and front-to-back) of the left hand side - literally identical, just inverted on two axis.

Large portion of the ENTIRE DAY trying to work out why the merry FRACK it won't play ball (including several trys from scratch).

The really bloody stupid part? the whole dman TANK only took about two session's worth, because it is such a simple and symmentrical shape.

A lot of her techniques were therefore initially developed by flailing around until she found something that worked, then being too afraid to make changes in case it stopped working. Even when she became more experienced, a lot of her earlier attempts had become comfortable habits.

We find out that alicorns can be born when Hasbro needs to make money. And apparently a baby alicorn can doom an entire civilization to destruction. Thus confirming that babies are evil. The actual episodes are acceptable, but they are dragged down by the premise.

Pinkie, Rarity, and Maud in Manehattan. Lots of good interaction between the characters. All of the voice actors did a great job and the script was right on.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders have an existential crisis when they cannot fulfill their purpose of helping with cutie mark problems. The actual premise is intriguing and has potential but the actual episode is dragged down by characters that are one-dimensional.

Season 6 Episode 5, Gauntlet of Fire

Spike is called to the dragon lands by the dragon lord and must compete to become the next dragon lord. I really liked the return of the old characters and the new character, Ember. Spike can actually have an episode where he is not the focus of ridicule (mostly). Lots of action and world building while still keeping the ponyness of the universe.

Season 6 Episode 6, No Second Prances

Starlight Glimmer needs to find a friend and finds Trixie. I’m not a huge Trixie fan which holds the episode back. However, neurotic Twilight and the ending with Princess Celestia elevate this episode.

Season 6 Episode 7, Newbie Dash

Dash joins the Wonderbolts but is bullied by the other members. This one is a premise that pony is meant for. Bullying is a problem that should be discussed properly such as with Babs Seed. But do they do that, no. The message at the end is to just suck it up. Hits close to home for many people. Rainbow Dash’s impressions of the other Mane Six are a little cringe worthy.

Season 6 Episode 8, A Hearth’s Warming Tale

Dickens Christmas Carol ponified. Is it original, absolutely not. But the music is great, and it fits the pony universe very well. I have watched multiple times. Also further confirms how terrifying the pony universe is since a single unicorn can cause a mass extinction (again).

Season 6 Episode 9, The Saddle Row Review
4.5/5
Rarity opens her store with the help of the Mane Six. I was kind of indifferent on the first watch. But seeing it the second time really made me appreciate the episode. All the characters really shined. The only downside was the spoon mare.

Season 6 Episode 10, Applejack’s “Day” Off
3.5/5
Applejack is supposed to spend the day relaxing at the spa with Rarity but gets busy. Once again, we see that Applejack is a silly, bull headed pony. It doesn’t really grow the world any although learning more about the spa was nice.

Season 6 Episode 11, Flutter Brother
2/5
Fluttershy’s dead beat brother shows up. The brother is absolutely terrible and should have been introduced to the weather factory. Fluttershy’s parents are just as useless. The only good things are that Fluttershy has a backbone and the assumed relationships with Rainbow Dash.

Season 6 Episode 12, Spice of Life

Rarity and Pinkie Pie find an exotic restaurant (Indian) in Canterlot. Further confirms that ponies are silly and can easily be lead in herds. I love cooking, but I just didn’t find Saffron Marsala to be an engaging character.

Season 6 Episode 13, Stranger than Fanfiction

Rainbow Dash attends a Daring Do convention. The actual story is forgettable. However, Rainbow Dash being a super fan is adorable. The background imagery is also fantastic.

The CMC have to build derby cars with the help of their sisters. You get an idiot ball, you get an idiot ball, everyone gets an idiot ball. Take all growth from the past seasons, throw it out and multiply the Mysterious Mare Do Well by 5 times.

Season 6 Episode 15, 28 Pranks Later

Rainbow Dash’s pranks get out of hand. Again, too much idiot ball. I think every fan was yelling “You don’t prank Fluttershy!” at this episode. The zombies are a nice touch although the sequence lasts too long.

Season 6 Episode 16, The Times They are a Changeling

Spike finds a changeling, Thorax, near the Crystal Empire. The ending is very abrupt which hurts the episode. However, learning more about the changelings is great. And I just want to give a hug to Thorax. He can have my love.

Season 6 Episode 17, Dungeons and Discords

Spike, Big Mac, and Discord have a guys night playing Dungeons and Dragons. This had so much potential. But they went with the standard Dungeons and Dragons is stupid trope. The creature models and ending are only reason I give it 3/5.

Applejack assembles a Ponyville to compete with Appleloosa in buckball. Oh god, the expressions… so good! Most characters show actual intelligence and act like adults. Good slice of life episode. Also manages to make Snail sufferable (shocking).

The CMC meet a griffon that wants a cutie mark. This episode comes very close to having Gabby (the griffon) become too annoying, but they stay just on the right side of the line where she is cute.

Starlight Glimmer has to hang out with the Mane Six. This one is very controversial because of Stalight’s use of mind magic. Personally I like it since the episode shows that Starlight is not reformed and still has the villain mentality. It also shows why overlords must be very careful in giving instruction to minions.

Changelings attack Equestria and it is up to Starlight Glimmer, Trixie, Discord, and Thorax to save the day. The episode requires a few logical leaps (the changelings take out all opposition and have a magic McGuffin to neutralize Discord). However, the characters work well together and the changeling hive is interesting. + .5 for Chrysallis being a bad bug at the end.

Sure, I'll give a two-to-three sentence description of each episode, and my opinion on each. I'll spoiler it so as not to annoy those who already know, and they will be in production order rather than airdate order, if it matters.
The Crystalling, (Parts I & II): Shiny and Cadance have a foal, who is inexplicably already an alicorn. Glimmer has a B-plot to reconnect with her old friend Sunburst. The baby accidentally destroys the Crystal Heart, but thanks to Sunburst's knowledge of obscure spells, the day is saved. My opinion: I don't usually participate in this aspect of fandom, but I ship StarBurst with the intensity of a thousand suns.

Gift of the Maud Pie: Rarity and Pinkie head to Manehatten as Rarity is looking for a location for a new boutique and Pinkie wants to buy a gift (a rock pouch) for Maud. She ends up having to trade away her party cannon for it, but Maud trades it back; If you've ever read The Gift of the Magi, you saw this coming a mile away. My opinion: Gee, Pinkie it's not like you know someone very skilled with fabric to make a rock pouch, that'd be silly. Ugh.

On Your Marks: The CMC have their cutie marks... now what? They try to just hang out and do stuff as a group, but they start pulling apart. Eventually (after helping a new colt named Tender Taps find his cutie mark, more on him in a bit), the CMC discover that it's okay to have hobbies that don't include all three of them, and that doesn't mean that they won't still be friends. My opinion: Not bad, but this is the second new character (OK, Sunburst was talked about/shown in flashback before, but he had no lines, so I say he counts as new) that seems to be created for shipping. He's also not the last. Okay episode, though.

Gauntlet of Fire: A good Spike episode. That should be enough. Seriously though, while helping Rarity, Spike gets a mystical summons to the Dragon Lands: It seems that the head of state, Dragon Lord Torch, has reached the end of his tenure, so he tasks all the young dragons (other than his daughter Ember (again, more on her in a bit)) to find the Bloodstone Scepter, which he tosses into a nearby volcano. Whoever returns with the scepter will become the new Dragon Lord. Taking a page out of Wonder Woman's book, Ember disguises herself in armor and joins the hunt anyway. Eventually, she teams with Spike (who's only interested in making sure Garble doesn't win, as he said he'd declare war on Equestria), who in the end gives the scepter to Ember, trusting her to rule. My opinion: That recap was longer than I intended. Hmm. Anyway, 3rd new character almost designed for shipping. Though as I said, good Spike episode; that should be enough.

No Second Prances: Twilight tasks Glimmer with making a new friend. After some antics, she meets, and subsequently makes fast friends with, Trixie. Twilight then tries to make Glimmer befriend anypony else, showing a rather negative aspect of her personality, really. Eventually, Twi admits that even if she doesn't particularly like Trixie, she has to respect that Glimmer does. My Opinion: Twi seems almost vindictive in this episode; why is Glimmer worthy while Trixie isn't? Trixie's crimes are being a braggart (while performing as a magician) and being influenced by an ancient artifact. Glimmer's crimes include brainwashing a town and almost destroying Equestria through bucking with the time stream! Not a fan of this one.

Newbie Dash: Rainbow finally gets promoted to official member of the Wonderbolts (she was just a reservist previously), but embarrasses herself on her first day and gets a horrible nickname because of it. She spends the rest of the episode trying to get called other things (and going through more and more elaborate plans to do so). eventually, they tell her that everyone in the Wonderbolts has an embarrassing nickname; it's part of the comradery of the group. My opinion: This is another "this could have been avoided really easily" plot. The antics are fun, though, so there's that.

A Hearth's Warming Tale: You know how Equestria's 4th of July/how-we-became-a-nation holiday is in winter? Let's ignore that and make it a Christmas analogue by telling A Christmas Carol: Pony Edition. Seriously, there's a framing device on how Glimmer doesn't see the fuss about the holiday, but that's what it is. My opinion: I'm Jewish, so I'm annoyed when Christmas is shoved down my throat when it's November. This aired in May. Do the math.

The Fault in Our Cutie Marks: This episode introduces Gabby: the most cheerful griffon in all of fiction. Basically, since ponies live in harmony and have cutie marks, she determines the former is due to the latter and asks the CMC to give her a cutie mark. They can't; it's just not part of griffon biology, but they try to help her anyway. Turns out she's really good at helping; doesn't seem to matter what, either. They go to apologize that they failed, but she shows up with a cutie mark! It's fake, obviously, in a "I didn't want to disappoint you" scenario, but it all ends with them giving her a pair of cutie mark-style decals for her saddlebags and throwing her a cuteceañera anyway. My opinion: Gabby is really cute, and they don't do a cop-out "You really did get a cutie mark!" ending. All in all, I like it.

The Saddle Row Review: Rarity has opened her new boutique and goes to read the review that will make-or-break her new business. We then cut back to the story's author (who is such an obvious J Jonah Jameson expy it hurts) interviewing the rest of the Mane 6 on how the opening went. We get a lot of The Office-style cut-to-the-interview segments as the story is told. After all the trials in getting the boutique open in time, Rarity gets a great review. My opinion: Easily one of the top 3 episodes of the season. Tons of fun has a nice flow. I really like it.

Applejack's Day Off: Applejack has trouble finding time to go to the spa with Rarity, as she has tons of chores, so Twi and Spike offer to do them while she does. While at the spa, they can't use the steam room because the spa workers can't get enough steam, and they give their patrons warm towels while they wait. Turns out they have a leak, which is exacerbated by them using the heat for the towels. Unfortunately, this eats up all the time they had and she heads back, only to find that her chores/routine has a bunch of unnecessary steps and by getting rid of them, she can free up more time to spend with her friends. My opinion: I have two theories on this episode: A) this is a genetic condition, as it's similar to Granny Smith' weird techniques in finding out how Zap Apples grow, or B) it's contrived nonsense. Take your pick.

Flutter Brutter: Goon news: We get to meet Fluttershy's family. Bad news: Her brother, Zephyr Breeze, is a lazy braggart. Fluttershy takes him in and tries to get him gainful employment, but it turns out that his boasting is covering up a crippling fear of failure. Eventually, they get him to finish his studies (in mane styling, if you care) and get him back on his feet. My opinion: Remember how I said a bunch of new characters seemed to be introduced just for shipping purposes? Zephyr seems like anti-shipping; he's annoying, self-centered, and convinced Dash is insterested in him dispite all evidence to the contrary. I was "meh" about it, myself.

Spice Up Your Life: Twi and Glimmer finally fix the cuite map, and find a mission for Rariyt and Pinkie. When they arrive, they stop for lunch, but all the high-class resturants Rarity heads to serve the same bland food. They find an out-of-the-way resturant that serves Indian-style cuisine and the try to help promote it, but end up turning it into another bland copy before realizing that they fix it. My opinion: The food critic/rater Zesty Gourmand just beat out Ms. Harshwinny at being an unlikable jerk. At least Harshwinny has professionalism. Also, Rarity, this is, what, the 8th time you tried interacting with "high class" ponies only to find out they're pompous jerks? Get a clue!

Stranger Than Fan Fiction: Rainbow attends a Daring Do convention and meets Quibble Pants (voiced by Patton Oswald), who is a huge fan of the series... at least the first 3 volumes. Eventually, they get attacked by Caberleron and pulled into an adventure, which Quibble seems to think it's made up at first (Remember, most peopole think 'Do is fictional). Eventually, they figuer out the puzzles and save the day, with Quibble saying it's okay to only like part of a series/ like it for different things. My opinion: While quibble gets shipped with Dash, he's not a "made for shipping" character; he's an anology for all the "RUINED FOREVER!" crowd. Also, there is a Daring Do body pillow. Where she is tied up. Yeah.

The Cart Before The Ponies: The class are having a boxcart derby, and the CMC get AJ, Dash and Rarity to help, but they go overboard and take over the project. They lose the race, but their designs win other awards. My opinion: An apt title, as winning the cart race had them ignore previous character development. You can safely skip this one, really.

28 Pranks Later: Remember "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well"? Same idea, but a) it was due to a pranking spree rather than Rainbow getting full of herself, b) she was asked to stop, but refused, and c) the entire town got together and pulled a zombie prank back at her. My opinion: Better executed than the original and fun. I liked it, though some feel it was a better fit for Season 1 or 2 Dash as opposed to 6.

The Times They Are A Changeling: Twilight, Glimmer and Spike head to the Crystal Empire (to visit Flurry Heart (the baby) and Sunburst) when they discover the entire empire is on high alert; seems that there's a changeling on the loose. Spike is tasked to help find it and sends the group of guars in different directions before falling into a cave and meeting said changeling. His name is Thorax, and he truly wants to be friends with the ponies. There are some antics and he is spotted. Spike is paralyzed by indesicion and initially says nothing, but then immediately gets Thorax and returns with him and vouches for him. After Twi says it's good enough for her, Shiny and Cadance welcome him into their court. My opinion: I like Thorax. Spike gets a neat song. There's an allusion to The Marx Brothers. It's neat.

Dungeons and Discords: While the Mane 6 are off on an assignment to Yakyakistan, Spike invites Discord to his and Big Mac's "Guys' Night". He is dissapointed to find out it's an Oubliettes & Ogres (read: D&D) game. There's some tension between the three, but it all works out in the end. My opinion: While discord did some "rewrite reality so they LARP the game, the previews made it look much more than it was. Also, Spike, it's not healthy to make your GMPC a self-insert. All in all, it was fun, but it could have been better.

Buckball Season: AJ and Dash recruit Fluttershy and Pinkie ito helping them find a unicorn for a game of Buckball, which needs one of each race for some reason. While they find a unicorn (Snails, believe it or not), it's clear that Flutters and Pinkie are naturals for the game and have them take their place. Unfortunatly, they seem to snap under the pressure, but AJ and Dash fix it soon enough. My opinion: Very not bad. It seems wierd that Fluttershy is better at a sport than Dash, but it works.

Viva Las Pegasus: The cutie map sends Fluttershy and Dash to Las Pegasus in order to find a cutie mark problem. They find Flim and Flam there, and the two argue. AJ wants to find someone else to help, but eventually they work with them, seems Gladstone, the proprieter of the hotel is playing everyone against each other while claiming to be their friend, They eventually trick him into revealing himself, and it all goes downhill for him. My opinion: Gladstone's last scene makes this okay instead of really good. Upon realizing that his scheme is undone and he's lost everything, he runs out crying. What I wanted to happen is him to lunge at Fluttershy for ruining everything, only to get bucked by AJ. It just feels incomplete.

Every Little Things She Does: Glimmer is way behind on her friendship reports, so she tries to do everything at once. Once it's clear that isn't going to work, she brainwashes everyone and tries again. It still doesn't work and it backfires horribly. They eventually forgive her, though. My opinion: Let's just say that if Glimmer pulled that on me, she wouldn't have to worry about freindship problems as much as "running away from me/hoping I don't find her" problems.

PPOV: A fun cruise with Rarity, Pinkie and AJ fails, and each blames the other in this Roshomon-stlye story. My opinion: Seeing the three being wildly out of character is funny and seeing Twi try to solve it is fun. The last 3 minutes/ the solution make no sense, though.

Where the Apple Lies: Applejack tells a story where her well-meaning lies almost cost everything. My opinion: I did not like this episode for several reasons: 1) the plot gets annoying when AJ digs herself deeper and deeper, 2) Big Mac won't shut up, thus ruining his later stoic personality, and 3) this story is set several years ago, before Applebloom was born, yet there isn't even a handwave of where AJ's parents are.

Top Bolt: Dash and Twi head to Wonderbolts HQ because of the cutie map and meet 2 potential recruits: the shy Vapor Trail and the brash Sky Stinger. Turns out Vapor has been helping Stinger by making tailwinds for him, and he never noticed. There's some drama there, but eventually they work things out and enter the academy. My opinion: Sky Stinger is annoyingly cocky. I was practically begging Dash to humble him, but it never happened. It was okay, otherwise.

To Where and Back Again (Parts I & II): Glimmer gets an invite back to Our Town, and takes Trixie with her, as Twi suggested she take a friend (meaning her). When they return, everyone is acting wierd. Turns out, while they were gone, the entire Mane 7 has been kidnapped and replaced with changelings. Glimmer gets Trixie, Thorax (who came on Sunburst's behest as they attacked the Empire too) and Discord (who was meh about the whole thing until they mention Fluttershy was taken). They head to the Chegling Kindom to rescue them, but Chrysalis' throne blocks all non-changeling magic, meaning that only Thorax's magic still works. Eventually, they lose Discord (who was paralyed with indescision with the sight of dozens of Fluttershys) and Trixie (who makes a sacrifice play). and they pull a good switch with Glimmer and Thorax, but eventually Chrysalis gets Thorax and tries to pull the loveout of him. By sharing it with her, it causes a incredible transformation (as you see on the front page) and Chrysalis is defeated. Glimmer offers to spare/redeem her, but she refuses and heads off. My opinion: I liked it, and it contains an important message: Befriending Spike is good for your career, as this makes the third foreign head of state that he is freinds with. I forsee a career in diplomacy for the young drake.

Pinkie, Rarity, and Maud in Manehattan. Lots of good interaction between the characters. All of the voice actors did a great job and the script was right on.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders have an existential crisis when they cannot fulfill their purpose of helping with cutie mark problems. The actual premise is intriguing and has potential but the actual episode is dragged down by characters that are one-dimensional.

Season 6 Episode 5, Gauntlet of Fire

Spike is called to the dragon lands by the dragon lord and must compete to become the next dragon lord. I really liked the return of the old characters and the new character, Ember. Spike can actually have an episode where he is not the focus of ridicule (mostly). Lots of action and world building while still keeping the ponyness of the universe.

Season 6 Episode 6, No Second Prances

Starlight Glimmer needs to find a friend and finds Trixie. I’m not a huge Trixie fan which holds the episode back. However, neurotic Twilight and the ending with Princess Celestia elevate this episode.

Season 6 Episode 7, Newbie Dash

Dash joins the Wonderbolts but is bullied by the other members. This one is a premise that pony is meant for. Bullying is a problem that should be discussed properly such as with Babs Seed. But do they do that, no. The message at the end is to just suck it up. Hits close to home for many people. Rainbow Dash’s impressions of the other Mane Six are a little cringe worthy.

Season 6 Episode 8, A Hearth’s Warming Tale

Dickens Christmas Carol ponified. Is it original, absolutely not. But the music is great, and it fits the pony universe very well. I have watched multiple times. Also further confirms how terrifying the pony universe is since a single unicorn can cause a mass extinction (again).

Season 6 Episode 9, The Saddle Row Review

Rarity opens her store with the help of the Mane Six. I was kind of indifferent on the first watch. But seeing it the second time really made me appreciate the episode. All the characters really shined. The only downside was the spoon mare.

Applejack is supposed to spend the day relaxing at the spa with Rarity but gets busy. Once again, we see that Applejack is a silly, bull headed pony. It doesn’t really grow the world any although learning more about the spa was nice.

Fluttershy’s dead beat brother shows up. The brother is absolutely terrible and should have been introduced to the weather factory. Fluttershy’s parents are just as useless. The only good things are that Fluttershy has a backbone and the assumed relationships with Rainbow Dash.

Rarity and Pinkie Pie find an exotic restaurant (Indian) in Canterlot. Further confirms that ponies are silly and can easily be lead in herds. I love cooking, but I just didn’t find Saffron Marsala to be an engaging character.

Rainbow Dash attends a Daring Do convention. The actual story is forgettable. However, Rainbow Dash being a super fan is adorable. The background imagery is also fantastic.

Rainbow Dash’s pranks get out of hand. Again, too much idiot ball. I think every fan was yelling “You don’t prank Fluttershy!” at this episode. The zombies are a nice touch although the sequence lasts too long.

Spike finds a changeling, Thorax, near the Crystal Empire. The ending is very abrupt which hurts the episode. However, learning more about the changelings is great. And I just want to give a hug to Thorax. He can have my love.

Spike, Big Mac, and Discord have a guys night playing Dungeons and Dragons. This had so much potential. But they went with the standard Dungeons and Dragons is stupid trope. The creature models and ending are only reason I give it 3/5.

Applejack assembles a Ponyville to compete with Appleloosa in buckball. Oh god, the expressions… so good! Most characters show actual intelligence and act like adults. Good slice of life episode. Also manages to make Snail sufferable (shocking).

So much of what makes an episode likable or not is dependent on subjective views of characters and stuff. The only way to find out is watch for yourself. I only got into the show recently (through another thread on this forum incidentally) and Season 6 is probably my favorite so far.

Season 6 Episode 1 and 2, The Crystalling

Not the most interesting plot ever for a 2-parter, but Shining and Cadance's kid is pretty cute.

Season 6 Episode 3, The Gift of Maud Pie

Excellent implementation of Maud and Pinkie's relationship. Rather predictable from the title, but the story fits them well.

Season 6 Episode 4, On Your Marks

Good to see them exploring the post-cutie mark implications of the CMCs. Crazy Applebloom is creepy.

Season 6 Episode 5, Gauntlet of Fire

Spike gets to be taken seriously for once, which is nice. Another good new character, who'll hopefully get some more screentime.

Season 6 Episode 6, No Second Prances

Twilight is a little out of character, but Trixie struggling with her ego and jealousy of Twilight makes for an interesting arc.

Season 6 Episode 7, Newbie Dash

There are a couple of cringeworthy scenes, but it provides an interesting look at the difference between bullying and friendly teasing common in tightly-knit groups, and what to do when they collide. (Or NOT to do really)

Season 6 Episode 8, A Hearth’s Warming Tale

If you like Christmas Carol adaptions, you'll like this. Great mapping of ponies to Christmas Carol characters and fantastic songs. Probably one of my favorite episodes of the series.

Season 6 Episode 9, The Saddle Row Review

This has an interesting narrative format, reminds me of "The Office" almost. The plot is not particularly noteworthy, but the character's running commentary on it makes it quite enjoyable.

Season 6 Episode 10, Applejack’s “Day” Off

A couple funny moments but not much to see here

Season 6 Episode 11, Flutter Brother

Fluttershy's brother is annoying, but Fluttershy gets some good snarky comments on his behavior, which is just hilarious coming from her.

Season 6 Episode 12, Spice of Life

Not much to see here either. Not bad, just ordinary

Season 6 Episode 13, Stranger than Fanfiction

This is another hate or love it episode. I really liked how they avoided setting Quibble up as a straw man for Rainbow to humiliate like often happens. I hope we see him again; Patton Oswalt is great, and Quibble and Rainbow have an interesting dynamic. Also, this has some of the best facial expressions we've seen in a long time.

Season 6 Episode 14, The Cart Before the Ponies

Probably the low point of the season. Skip this and you won't miss too much except idiot balls being juggled. It could've been really interesting if the CMC's had thought things through and shuffled up their mentors instead.

Season 6 Episode 15, 28 Pranks Later

I thought some of Rainbow's pranks were pretty good...pretty decent creepy atmosphere for MLP

Flim and Flam don't make great heroes.

Season 6 Episode 21, Every Little Thing She Does

Starlight still hasn't learned her lesson. The enjoy ability of this episode is entirely dependent on your opinion of her character.

Season 6 Episode 22, PPOV (Pony Point of View)

A good reminder that sometimes no one's side of the story is right. For a sort of mystery-type episode, the ending was a bit underwhelming.

Season 6 Episode 23, Where the Apple Lies

Another low point. The snowballing lie trope has been done before much better

Season 6 Episode 24, Top Bolt

Interesting conflict between Twilight and Rainbow on how to handle approaching problems. The new characters may or may not be a plus.

Season 6 Episode 25 and 26, To Where and Back Again

"Well isn't this quite the collection of secondary characters!". This reminds me of Slice of Life (though not quite that great). Chrysalis remains a good villain.

Started rewatching Season 5 since it recently became available on Netflix. Still waiting for Equestria Girls 4, which is taking its bloody sweet time becoming available :smallannoyed:

The Cutie Map
Aside from the Mane 6's complete failure to put up even a little fight (the greatest fault of the episode), this wasn't a bad two-parter. Great song, nice secondary characters, and a good pace. The plot wasn't mind-blowing, but neither was it bad, and we got to explore another part of Equestria which is always welcome. Even Starlight was okay in this one, whatever one might think of her later roles. Cutie marks continue to make no sense, though.

This is what, six-seven hours of attempts? (Nearly as long as the model itself took to bloody DRAW).

And TurboCAD is showing no rhyme or reason why it won't assemble it. No reason, no occuled geometry, no point-on-a-edge, nothing. It just... won't. Sometimes to the point of "I'll assemble that bit there, but not that bit there despite the fact I did it earlier and will do on that bit which is identical there."

And it's a long, painfully slow job, because it takes for freaking EVER because of the rivets (which is WILL NOT let ne put on afterwards).

I am attempting to bodge-job it because it's the only way to get it to work maybe.

I am at that point of frustration where screaming and shouting not longer matters.

I like Starlight as a semi-reformed villain that is different than Discord. They gave her a bit much power in The Cutie Map with the ability to defeat the Mane 6 because of plot. They also dumped on her back story by trying to explain that her friend got a cutie mark so she needs to destroy the world.

I think that she can slip into the villain role very easily without necessarily realizing it which makes her interesting. For example, she founds a town and brain washes the population without thinking why that may be wrong. Similarly, she brainwashes the Mane 6 in Every Little Thing She Does not because she wants power but because she sees magic as the solution to problems.

I kind of see her like Twilight around the Season 1 era except without the moral compass. She has magic, views it as a tool to solve problems, and uses it. It kind of goes to show what Twilight could have become if she didn't have Celestia to guide her.

I took a break about half-an-hour later (seven-ish) to go watch Asterix and the Mansion of the Gods I'd gotten on DVD. (It was rather a good one. The first fifteen/twenty minutes were to the book almost word-for-word, and then it went off and did its own thing which very roughly followed the book in broad strokes, but upped the ante and spanned the story out longer.)

I finally got something vaguely assembled (which MIGHT work) at ELEVEN. So it has taken me jst about nearly as logn to assemble the bloody thing as it took to draw it. For absolutely no rhyme or reason.

And then, by that point, in the gaps while TurboCAD took it's sweet fracking time, I'd started re-printing Sins of the Saviors and Spires of Xin-Shalast (which had mysteriously disappeared, but I now have a distant memory of them getting something spilled on them during the dining-room over and I'd forgotten in all the Christmas-gubbins thereafter), so may as well finish; which was another hour of fairly tedious gubbins (because it's gotta be double-sided and all the maps have to be in colour so I can stand a chance of seeing what I'm looking at)...

And I'm coming to the conclusion I'm going off Age of Empires 2 (the Forgotten campaigns jus don't seem as fun, not to mention all the bugs and frustration - I rage-quit the last session I played), and it was too late to do anything useful.

All in all, it's been a trying couple of days.

Tomorrow, I might at least try starting on finishing White March 2 of Pillars of Eternity (since PoE 2 just got announced, crowd-sources and funded in twenty-three hours... Been surfing their forums most of the day, in between the painful waiting-for-lazy-arse-TCAD gaps.)

Having listened to all of his stuff today (and with a face sore from laughing so much) this guy loves the show. He mocks it but it's clear he's connected with it on a really deep level and has a total conviction that it's made him a better person. He talks a lot about Shimmer and Glimglam and how their redemption arcs really click with him because that's a perspective on life that he finds a real connection with.

There are dirty jokes and moments of depression and a total lack of a filter, but it's clear that he finds a lot of value in the show's messages and friendship lessons and really dwells and reflects on them. I appreciate season 6 much, much more after listening to this guy's reflections on it.

Before the start of season 5, I said that Lord Tirek will be a very dangerous enemy to Equestria when he returns. He's smart and patient, he can learn from his mistake, and will make sure that he can't be defeated the same way as last time. Sure, we now have Starlight Glimmer too, and she could be just as dangerous if she chooses to become a villain again. But I still think the situation with Lord Tirek is the same. I now have a bit more idea about what he can do.

Oh no, I know it would be similar to commissioning, but I was worried about the post being too long and filled with ifs, buts and maybes - and was also worried about it sounding a bit disrespectful to the various artists on here to almost dismiss them as 'not really being involved'. But the point is still that it may not matter to Pinkie. I know people with this mindset - that if it's a personal gift, a family gift, going round the shops yourself is seen as taking more 'effort' than swapping e-mails or phone calls with an individual creator. And Pinkie often comes across to me as wanting to put a lot of effort into herself doing things. The Party of One Pinkie desperately hoping her friends don't leave her may have been a while ago, but you can still see that need for relevancy and personal connections shine through.

In any case I personally think the whole discussion is moot. As I recall the idea of the rock pouch was made on the hoof (literally in this case!) so there may not have been time to get it done, certainly not to Rarity's standards. And she clearly wasn't prepared anyway; Rarity often spontaneously offers to make something, yet she doesn't in this case, the obvious conclusion is that she wasn't equipped.

Rarity is the only pony who seems to understand a castle sould be magnificent, majestic and shining. Plus, she's probably talking about "sparkling up " the place - it has crystals but they're unattended and dusty.
Compare that to the others' suggestions: make it a barn, make it a pet shelter, make it a shrine (for the wrong pony) or just booby-trap the place - Rarity's direction makes the most sense, in my opinion.

a) The word you're looking for would be plagiarism, and b) That would only be true if the bag had a proprietary design or material. I'm sure that Rarity's version would have likely been a different color or design, so that wouldn't be a problem.

So, because I haven't got ENOUGH to do, today I came to the conclusion that I am going to have to make a fairly major revision to 3.Aotrs to a) largely adopt the Pathfinder creature type and subtypes (with notable effects to Undead and Outsiders) and b) implement the Fly skill, largely because it will ease some of the work converting PF stats (in many cases, I can nearly straight copy/paste). (And the power boost a lot of PF monsters have over the old 3.x versions - even from the old adventure paths is worth it, too.)

Still, one big slog and (though it's a bit late really), I have at least brought the Dreemaenhyll Bestiary up to standard with fairly minimal fuss.

I have... terrifyingly, also broached the subject with the players about whether or not we should adopt PF's feat-ever-other-level instead of every third. We'll see what they say.

I can tell you now, largely nothing, since we use Rolemaster for scifi most of the time (and a hybrid of SW D20 revised and Stargate SG-1 for the one Star Wars Imperial party we have) - and pretty much exclusively play scifi with day quests . Space!PF will very likely never even get a look in, especially since I'm snided out with PF adventure paths to run.

Best it can hope for is maybe the fluff will be good enough to warrent rading for its own right (and I'm a little dubious about that though the high standard of Golarion gives it some chance) or a few ideas good enough to nick from (like regular PF) for the rare occasions we're not playing scifi with RM.

Closing on the house Friday. I hate that there is still room for things to go wrong in this transaction because some people still aren't on the same page.

True story from when I was buying my house.

I had been looking at the house for around 6 months. I originally made a very low offer, and it was rejected.

About 4 months later, I looked at the house again. The price had dropped, so I made another offer, and it was accepted. The house had been owned for 30+ years, and the person that owned it had to move to a nursing home.

Around 3 weeks before closing, the real estate agent called me. Apparently the original owner had passed away. The good news is that the daughters that inherited the estate wanted to move forward with the sale. Okay I thought, no problem.

Around 1 week before the closing, I get another call. The daughters were cleaning up the house, moving out the last items from the attic. However, she missed a step on a rafter and stepped through the master bedroom ceiling. Okay I thought, no problem. They can either cut the purchase price or fix the hole. In the end, they got a contractor out to repair the ceiling, and I couldn't find where the damage was.

In the end, the closing went off with no other real problems, and everyone was satisfied.

You know that got revived as a Comic Book series, right? They're published by Oni Press, but both Nickelodeon and Jhonen Vasquez are collaborators in it. First issue was published in July 2015 and as of last December there are 16 issues total--all written by either Vasquez himself or people who worked on the show.

Incidentally, I'd recommend Earth Beta-119-Q on your multiverse journey. I know a guy from there and they managed to make the Star Wars Prequels good without significantly altering the plot.(Dear God, I never thought I'd actually like Jar-Jar.)

I only now realize that "aramaspi" may be plural (what's the singular, though? aramasp?) The tale talks about it as if it's a single creature, but the official map shows an aramaspi territory as if it's a race. I'm inclined to believe the tale isn't 100% accurate, and actually it was a raid by aramaspi (plural), not a single thief.

Sunset's magical girl outfit is pretty neat, but I seriously can't get over the weird pony ears. I think Rarity is the only one who makes it work, at least in that outfit.

So I could have done without the excessive romance (and I say that as a fervent shipper, of course), but I should be fair ... I guess. At least he isn't Flash Shining Armor III. I suppose if Twilight has to get all kissy-wissy over a boy, they ... could have done worse. I suppose. Maybe. Meh.

Also, I do like how they made SciTwi completely uninterested in Flash, at least. And it seems any chance of anything between Flash and ponyTwi is officially dead too. I know I'm mean, but that's nice.

Still doesn't make me a fan. With Flash it was at least only a hint, but I'd like the EqG movies much better if they simply left out the teenage romance stuff entirely. It only distracts and detracts from the rest.

As for the rest, this one seemed a bit "down to earth" compared to the others, for lack of a better expression. But romance issues aside, it was pretty okay.

Got up to page 18/63... The wird thing? Only part way into "d" alphabetically. Apparently, the mix of monsters in the file has a disproportionate amount of a-through-d monsters. The mind boggles.

Maaaaybe Arimaspi is not a name, but a title. Like the title of their king or something. So when the one we saw in the tale died, some other of his race took his place and became Arimaspi. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the original author, but the stories have the framing device of being a reproduction of the Memoirs of Doctor John Watson. Doyle wrote something because it's what he wanted to happen or what he wanted his character to say. Watson wrote something down becuase it's what happened.

So the Watsonian perspective is the reason something happened from the character's perspective, the Doyalist is the Author's perspective on why it happened.

Got to 24/66 pages of monster revision done (all the way up to just prior to "Formorian"). Might have, after considerable effort, have dragged enough replies out of player to decide whether they want to go to PF feat every odd level instead of every 3. (Will require fair bit of going back and resorting stuff i've done, though I cheated tonight and copy/pasted PF feats, modified as necessary and marked anything over 3.x core in red.) Still making changes to the format (which usually means going back through and through my Dree Bestiary) as I go, which slows things down, but it sort of needs to be done.

One interesting thing...

Ferox. Monster. Some sort of animal. Could not for the unlife of me find where it came from, and eventually started searching my old quest stat blocks and found it, from the AD&D Die Vecna Die! module (which by extraordinaty co-incidence, I skim-reading last night). Still none the wiser as to what is was, but nevermind...

Got to 24/66 pages of monster revision done (all the way up to just prior to "Formorian"). Might have, after considerable effort, have dragged enough replies out of player to decide whether they want to go to PF feat every odd level instead of every 3. (Will require fair bit of going back and resorting stuff i've done, though I cheated tonight and copy/pasted PF feats, modified as necessary and marked anything over 3.x core in red.) Still making changes to the format (which usually means going back through and through my Dree Bestiary) as I go, which slows things down, but it sort of needs to be done.

One interesting thing...

Ferox. Monster. Some sort of animal. Could not for the unlife of me find where it came from, and eventually started searching my old quest stat blocks and found it, from the AD&D Die Vecna Die! module (which by extraordinaty co-incidence, I skim-reading last night). Still none the wiser as to what is was, but nevermind...

The update is principally to reduce the differences between 3.Aotrs and PF, actually, since up until now 3.A was predominatly 3.5. There are some major differences, most notably outsiders (PF have D10 HD, not as good saves, and fold elementals into them) and Undead (D8+Cha not D12 HD, Cha to Fort save et al) and I was fed-up of back-converting PF stats to 3.A.

(I absolutely refuse to run monsters out of books - far too much fracking about with pages - so if a published module does not have the stats with it (and says something like "see [book][page reference]") it requires the stats to be transcribed to my notes. I also never liked the later-format 3.5 stat blocks - nor the PF sta blocks derived from them - so part of that includes putting them in the format I want.)

PF also has different feats (which may be changing if I can get a straight answer out of my players), which needed fixing and the skills were slightly different. (I did not fold Jump in to Acrobatics, did not adopt Fly as a skill until this overhaul and I refuse to not have Concentration as a skill.) The feats can also be different in other ways; PF Alertness replace bonus to spot and Search with Perception and Sense Motive; 3.A with Perception and +1 to initiative, for example.

So this overhaul is in many ways a re-overhaul of stats I'd converted from PF (or have not converted yet) from 3.5-like to PF-like (but not being entirely one or the other), but will mean I can cut-and-paste from PF stats more and need to adjust less. Most of the skill changes are now addative (I've kept 3.5's 8 skills/HD for Outsiders, for example, since as most of them require Concentration, it's easier to add skill points that back-calculate a creature's skill to replace one), a few BAB changes and such (and making a fair number of monsters a loot beefier - PF having far less secondary natural weapons, for one).

PF and 3.A differ in feats as well, since 3.A is mostly 3.5 with knobs on and some of PF's better bit nicked and back-tweaked for compatibility. I did not adapt PF quite simply because I considered that overall, PF's houserules for 3.5 were not any better than my houserules. While I have adopted a fair number, there are an equally large number I looked at and had a derisive snort over.

(Power Attack, for example. Complaints about "PA makes Wraith Striking Dragons far too powerful" means that you should, rather than "fix" one of the Fighter and Barbarian's most useful feats, maybe fix dragons? I mean, for a kick off, I dunno, maybe cap the BAB off at 20HD and make them have half-progression thereafter like Epic characters, instead of scaling it willy-nilly? (Because that's what 3.A uses, and stats as I come across are modified as necessary.) And Dispel Magic absolutely did NOT need a nerf, it's absolutely critical.)

If it requires an afternoon to work out an approximation of how many hours of daylight the party has to work with in a quest for pre-teen players, a couple of week's worth of stat conversions, an complete overhaul of the casting system to remove Vancian casting for a campaign world or six months revising the current Rolemaster system for a new party because the game system hasn't had a overhaul for twenty years (or even a new party for ten) or painstakingly writing up lists of every feat and spell and their source and eventually, the majority of every feat and spell with revisions and modifications (so that you don't have to lug otherwise largely redundant paperwork to the club everyweek) to do it right, then that's what will get done.

No matter how many times you have to go back all through something because you've made another format change.

We Do Not Ram With Starships, people! Not as a "tactic" anyway. As a suicidal last resort to take you with them, perhaps, but not as a standard tactic. (The carrier is lucky is was moving so damn slow - no distance for a run up - or it would have killed itself (though probably the enemy ship too).) Not sure that was really a "last resort" situation, for that matter, since the carrier itself was undamaged until it did that... (Would have been more sensible to turn around and try and get the hell out of range, since y'know killing yourself by ramming the enemy to death is kind of a crappy thing to do your pilots...)

The main smoothbore gun of an M1 Abrams tank usually fires a round that is comprised mostly of a solid dense shell. It doesn't explode or do anything fancy (though the military has developed various shape-charge rounds too, because why not). It just impacts its target, and impacts at such a high velocity that the energy transfer of momentum melts through whatever it hits. It's a beautiful thing to watch in action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vENzhJM3tWc). If I had the money, there's a training ground in the Midwest US where civilians can go sign up to drive such a tank.

Well the Superbowl is over with kind of a shocking ending.

My favorite part was the half time show with the drones appearing as spots of light. It took me a while to figure out how they did that effect. Also, I am a fan of silly uses of technology.


I did get thinking of what would happen if ponies could play Earth sports. Overall, I think that they would do really well in most of them.
Soccer - ponies would probably tend to be faster and more stable than humans.
American Football - Maud could just run through the other team.
Baseball - pegasus outfielders.
Basketball - pegasus defense and dunking.
Hockey - humans might have the edge although we have seen ponies playing hockey.
Boxing - put Fluttershy in the ring. Only the most heartless person could hit her.

That would exclude a large number of interesting sports where you definitely need your hands, like water polo, tennis, volleyball, squash, fencing, bouldering, canoe racing.

In Erich Kästner's book Der 35. Mai, the characters witness an athletics competition. When a contestant in the short distance running event runs 100 meters in less than 10 seconds, one of the characters, who is a talking horse, say that he's not impressed, because he can run that distance in five seconds.

We already have separate divisiosn for short distance running or swimming for men and women, so men compete against other men, and women against other women. We also have events for just children in particular age categories separately. For fencing too, we have separate men's and women's events. In boxing, there are divisions by gender and weight categories. Now in MLP, we've seen ponies fencing once, and we've seen them do at least long distance running for sport, plus bowling as well. If you had ponies here who want to participate in those sports, they'd probably participate in separate divisions from humans. Obviously this depends on the particular sport. In some particular sports, only humans or only ponies could compete, just like how we currently have a few events in gymnastics with only men or only women competing. In some sports, humans and ponies could compete together.

At this point, while her lack of an episode continues to be disheartening, I find a little comfort in the reasoning behind not doing one sooner: no one knew how to write one that they felt was good enough for the character. Now, though, prospective Celestia-writers would have to trawl through 6 seasons of sporadic appearances just to collect enough info to get a good idea of what she's like. Can we hire Larson to write one more script? :x

My prediction is still the same as what I said since before S5 started (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=18960879): that season 7 will ruin MLP forever.

That doesn't mean we can't enjoy the season. There may be good episodes, and if there are, we should enjoy them while they last. It's just that by the time you have watched the complete season, you'll see something that will affect your perception of all of MLP, including the earlier stories. It will make you wish you could forget some of the new episodes, and pretend they were never released, and disown them from canon. I'm not talking about little unconnected details (like Fluttershy's annoying brother in S6), but something that will be a central part of the season (like the Crusaders' special talent in S6). This isn't something that's special to MLP. Many book series or TV series have got bad sequels that enrage many fans. Think of Dune or Star Wars, only it will affect a larger proportion of the fans this time. I hope many of us will indeed be able to put that part or whole of the season aside, and continue to enjoy at least the previous seasons and FiM.

But all this is just a guess of mine. It could be wrong.

For good emasure, I took a moderate gander through Pathfinder's feats and nicked a few that seemed interesting (so that when I print the new 3.A master rules, it won't need doin' again for a bit), broguht my work on the last half of Rise of the Runelords up to code, and complied (and sent to the payers) a list of every language on Golarion, plus beholder, grell and slaad (since all three of those appear on Shackled City...)

I have to admit that I am very nervous about the movie. We are seeing all of these new characters. Presumably the Mane Six will still be the focus of the show.

Thus it seems like there won't be enough time to give all of these new characters time to actually develop personalities.

I'm hopeful since MLP did give the Mane Six personalities in the first two episodes, so they can do it. However, it can be easy to fall into a trap of just adding characters for no reason.

So, being well ahead with my painting (the Aotrs are so easy to do...!) I figured I'd have a stab, see how far I could get with the spell compliation project.

I got from halfway through C to the start of E. And there are... more pages of spells left in each of the three documents I'm compling than I care to think about...

Still, I did have of reformat a bit (changing Spell Resistance: [yes/no] to SR: and putting is after saves with a semi-colon saves roughly a line per spell, and putting he document to three columns dropped 38 => 33, so there was that).

Of course, literally the very first spell I came to was Control Light (from relics & rituals), which ended up - of COURSE lead me to end to writing up a whole section on light and darkness, modifed from Pathfinder... But as they actually explained what "counter and dispels" actually means (which is completely not what I interpreted from that sentence), I can save myself some lines for every ligt an darkness spell, as well as drop two needless extra descriptors for Dreemaenhyll that came from that understanding, so...

Something occurred to me about Starlight Glimmer.

I've had a theory for a while that her talent is related to messing around with destiny (hence the altering of cutie marks and the ability to actually change the past), but I just realized something that may or may not be a coincidence. Her name is an obvious parallel to Twilight's, but rather than sharing the concept of being the border between day and night like Sunset's does, her name refers directly to stars, which astrology claims can determine destiny.

The only other pony who is known to have created a spell that can alter cutie marks is literally named "Star" "swirl".

It's all a big 'mastery of the self is mastery of the world' metaphor. See also: Rainbow Rocks, where the team's exclusion of Sunset Shimmer was the inner problem that allowed the outer problem of the Sirens to run rampant. We could see the physical effects of the flawed friendship.

Everfree made a bunch of screenwriting 101 mistakes. Like, 'do not introduce a villain in act three'. And, 'do not have flashbacks with big swirly filters lasting more than 5 minutes'. I partially think that a party of 7 is just too damn much for a movie to deal with because all anyone other than Sunset and Twilight did was stand around and make jokes, oftentimes the same jokes throughout the entire movie.

(Hey, now that I say that, it reminds me a bit of how the jewel seeds in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha did Bad Stuff when random people picked one up.)

Makes a bit of sense, actually. Ponies appear to be specifcally designed to channel magic with a personal bend (however cutie marks do, in fact work), but humans don't... so the pony-magic looks for the nearest alternative and goes berserk.

Sunset never did explain "what happens when you bring an Element of Harmony into an alternate world" but my guess is that it broke the crown somehow and allowed the unworthy to wield its power. That's why Sunset didn't just put in on when she was in the Crystal Empire. And she has since been trying to understand how magic works in the human world, not how it works for humans.

Then again, maybe I am giving the first movie more depth than it actually had, or maybe that's the reason for Sunset failing to understand human magic.

Seriously, they mixed up the Japanese Levels(Baby 1, Baby 2, Child, Adult/Armor, Perfect/Golden Armor, Ultimate, Super Ultimate) with the English Levels(Fresh, In-Training, Rookie, Champion/Armor, Ultimate/Golden Armor, Mega, Ultra) and smooshed the first two levels together... I just finished re-watching Legends of Everfree. At the very end, glowy magic lights started to flow out of the Canterlot High statue.

I too, have noticed I'm not terribly familiar with a lot of these VAs. They don't seem bad though. Just relative unknowns to my usual circle. But I guess not going for top tier does save a lot of money for production's viewpoint.

I migh have gotten slightyl further, but I finally realised that I needed to rename Light of Luna/Mercuria/Venya because they are specifc to the Great Wheel cosmology and - antrually - the tiers of heaven are called entirely different things in Golarion; I don't mind having two sets of names (one for Dree, one for everything else), but I draw the line at three... And I still had to squiny a bit, because annoyingly, the good aligned-plains just dont have the same names or even denizens between the aforementioned cosmologies.

Also I found out we'd not read those spell descriptions at all since we started playing Shackled City and the PCs could have ben firing the rays twice as fast...

Regardless, something I've been thinking about is ponies playing Poker. Mostly because Rainbow Dash is one of those ponies who people can't seem to agree on if she is good at the game or not.

So my personal ranking on how good they are at Poker:

Top 3: Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity.

Rainbow Dash is good at lying, and keeping up a face of bravado. She can bluff just fine.

Rarity is pure evil, manipulative and overall the best liar in Ponyville. She's also decently smart so she can kinda calculate the odds.

Pinkie is Pinkie. She's crazy good at predicting which card is going to come up and reading the others.

Bottom 3: Fluttershy, Applejack, Twilight

Fluttershy isn't bad at bluffing or reading bluffs, but almost always backs down and folds anyways. So she doesn't do all that well.

Applejack is really bad at lying, and while she isn't bad at reading a bluff, she's not all that great at calculating the odds, so she makes dumb bets regardless.

Twilight is twitchy, really bad at lying, has to use obvious calming methods to maintain her cool, and is spectacularly bad at reading bluffs. She is downright the worst at poker.

I find this day increasingly hard as I get older, personally.

As one of unlife's contrarians (being the sort of person that divorced humanity in my third year of infant school), in my youth, it was much easier to scowl disapprovingly at the whole kit-caboodle that everyone else was getting into on its most prominent day from my dark corner, superior in my moral low-ground. But with the internet in particular makes it increasingly diffult to do so when there are other people in the corner as well. It forces me into an ever-increasing escalating game of one-uplichship, because dammit, how can I be different from everyone if everyone is hedging in on my turf? To paraphrase the famous saying goes, why would I want to be a member of any curmudgeon group that would have me as a member?

Dammit, humanity, what atrocies do I have to commit to maintain my position of immoral superiority?! Do I need to, like, disembowl planets full of puppies and kittes and broadcast-psi-burn it into your collective racial memories or something? I mean, REALLY. Cut a lich a break, why don't you?

Unfortunately, this year, what with this being the only day this week in which panto is not involved, I have to instead spend my time on the exciting tasks of painting the current batch of Aotrs ground forces before I can get back to that even more thrilling-but-necessary sorting compling and indexing all the spells, which actually now I think about and what day it is is a bad idea to mention somewhere even plasuibly distantly where any version of Twilight Sparkle might see it because it would lead to Horrors Unimaginable To Bleakbane and I probably ought to start shoring up the cross-dimensional wards or something now didn't I as if I didn't have enough to do.

As I watch a few more episodes of Centurions, ir continues to remind why it stood out among its contempories. It's not that the character work is anything special or the plot (like say, W.i.t.c.h.) Centurions is the opposite end of the spectrum. It can be a bit cheesy and a bit silly (though plot holes are at least addressed most of the time, showing that a welcome level of thought went into it. Because when I'm going "so why didn't they just do th- Oh, right, they ARE doing that" or "oh yeah, that makes sense." But as a cartoon action movie, it's pretty much the best.

And one of the reasons it does that - aside from being completely unafraid to say "yeah, this is the future and sci-fi, but yes, actual magic exists, also so do aliens" - is because of the level of credible threat. Doc Terror is not particularly clever (in tactics) or competant, but he has a level of menace and ruthlessness that distinguishes him from his stablemates - he even beats Megatron in that regard. His plans might be sometimes a bit hare-brained (but sometimes can be quite sharp), but they are very often cataclysmical threatening, regularly putting millions of lives in peril.

But what really sells it is his robot minions. Now, lots of shows at the time had disposal minions (Transformer being an exception). And they go down as easily - and sometimes hilariously ineptly - as anyone's... But what distinguished Centurions is just sometimes, even a Doom Drone Strafer gets lucky. And one of the Centurions gets hurt or nearly killed. Not for any plot-based reason, just part of the action. One episode today was centred on a baseball player being kidnapped and a fight between Doc Terror's daughter and an organised crime boss. (Apparently, Doc Terror, in an odd moment of off-screen character, bet rather heavily on the otherside winning. Guess even genocidal madmen need to have a hobby... Or that's how he makes his money to make all those cyborgs...) Anyhoo, just during the fighting, Ace McCloud got shot down by a lucky hit - fortuantely, Centurions would give ponies a run for superpowers, so he was fine - and later on, Jake Rockwell in Wild Weasel got his head-armour plate shot off (second time that's happened). For no reason (he knobbled the things that shot at him seconds later). But it sort of drives home (especially the look of "oh [expletive]" on his face... Dude nearly died to a random robot drone. It's not something I recall seeing on ANY of, not only the 1980s cartoons, but even very often in ANY cartoon. The heroes getting injured or nearly killed not as part of a plot point,but just because combat it, like dangerous and stuff. And just 'cos it's energy weapons doesn't make it any less dangerous. I think it's the fact the Centurions have bits that can be blown off (and aren't vehciles) that is what allows it to work. (You can't nearly blow off He-Man's or 1990s Spider-Man's head off with a laser or something.)

(Hell, Centurions spares no-one in this - over the course of the series they even wounded the frag-damn animal companions once or twice.)

Maybe if you write an MLP/Centurions crossover fanfic it'll inspire some artists. As you noted magic is already canon to Centurions and teleportation is one of the backbones of their tech. Setting up an 80s cartoon logic scenario that creates a portal to Equestria shouldn't be too hard.

Eh, not massive fan of crossover stories, I'm afraid - and if I was going to write something, I'd probably better doing something else.



That said, I have toyed with the idea of of something that one might submit to MLP Loops, wherein Twilight Awakes late, finds no pings, sees the Summer Sun celebration has gone south, dashed to th Castle of the Two sister just in time to find a strange mare at the "explain the elements" part and introduces the five stallions (and one strage little grey dragon that barks) as the elements of Water, Land, Air, Energy and Stealth, with the final element being - of course Teleportation.

NMM (and Twilight in the shadows) areis going "wait, what?" And then Epic butt-kicking happens.

And turns out they have no idea about all the Loops and stuff, but they are so used to weird rap they just rolled with it, and their reaction to being told about the Loops is to just shrug and take it stride. Because they are the mother-fracking Centurions.

(I mean, these are the same people who once encountered a smilodon in a space-station, and their reaction was less "it's a fracking smilodon, they're extinct!" and more "what's a smilodon doing here?" But when you regularly fight cyborgs, have seen actual dinosaurs (and cyborg dinosaurs) and aliens and magic and Atlantis and stuff, really, what CAN phase you at this point...?)

I feel like Rainbow might get bored with poker pretty fast; nothing "awesome", just numbers. (She might like more "flavorful" games like Magic: The Gathering though).

Applejack might actually be decent bluffer if she just sits still and is stoic.

Pinkie Pie is difficult to read so she'd be good if she still has actual playing cards in her hand at the end of the game...

I agree about the others though.

See, I don't see why she'd get bored. Poker moves really fast, and nothing grabs attention like money moving around. And the large bets are pretty awesome as you watch each card flip. MtG, other CCG are all very much imagining things happening. Poker, you get and earn money, move and build stacks of chips. It's all very real stuff.
