View Full Version : Pathfinder bloodline bonus spells and sorc/DD

Normally a sorcerer gets bonus spells one level "later" (well 2 levels for the 1st level one), so a 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc.

But DD says that sorcerer bonus spells of the draconic bloodline are granted as soon as the spell slots are there for them. I assume that only works for the DD levels, though, so when the sorc/DD runs out of DD levels and goes back to sorc, the sorc rules apply.

So would I be correct in assuming that the bonus spells would come, for a sorc 5/dd 10/sorc 5, at the following character levels: 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 17th, and 19th?

The DD clause is not going to give you the bonus spells any earlier. You have to take into account that DD delays your spell progression, so the clause is actually there because you might end up getting access to some of them even later than normal, if you take enough DD levels. For the first 4 DD levels it works out nicely - you get them exactly when you can cast them - but more than that and they get slightly delayed.

You're forgetting that DD loses caster levels. So while it's true that that sentence means they get their bloodline spells slightly faster for a little while (on evens instead of odds), your acquisition of new spell levels is slowed down, cancelling it out.

At level 3 (Sorc 3, CL 3), you get a bonus 1st.
At level 5, (Sorc 5, CL 5), you get a bonus 2nd.
At level 6 (Sorc 5/DD1, CL 5), you're still on 2nd-level spells and thus get no bonus.
At level 7 (Sorc 5/DD2, CL 6) you achieve a new spell level and thus get the bonus 3rd-level spell immediately.
At level 9 (Sorc 5/DD4, CL 8) you achieve a new spell level and thus get the bonus 4th-level spell immediately.
At level 11 (Sorc 5/DD6, CL 9) you're still on 4th-level spells and thus get no bonus.
At level 12 (Sorc 5/DD 7, CL 10) you achieve a new spell-level and thus get the bonus 5th-level spell immediately.
At level 14 (Sorc 5/DD 9, CL 11) you're still on 5th-level spells and thus get no bonus.
At level 15 (Sorc 5/DD 10, CL 12) you achieve a new spell-level and thus get the bonus 6th-level spell immediately.
At level 17 (Sorc 5/DD 10/Sorc +2, CL 14) you achieve a new spell-level and thus get the bonus 7th-level spell immediately.
At level 19 (Sorc 5/DD 10/Sorc +4, CL 16) you achieve a new spell-level and thus get the bonus 8th-level spell immediately.

Thus the bonus spell progression actually works out to be: 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th, and you top out at 8th-level spells.

EDIT: Ninja'ed, but I have the progression :smalltongue:

I'm Pretty sure Particle_man is taking the prestigious spellcaster feat (Gives lost castr levels from PRC's back) multiple times to make up for lost spell levels as he said before in a earlier thread he made about sorcerer and dragon discple.

Yes, PrCs don't lose caster levels any more it seem.

Which is fine, but he was asking why that line was there and we were explaining - because without it, DD sorcs would fall even further behind on their bloodline, in a PrC that is supposed to be all about progressing their bloodline.

Fair enough, so let us assume multiple Prestigious Spellcaster feats in the build so that no spellcaster levels are lost; would that Sorc/DD get the bonus spells known at the character levels described in the OP?

It would cost 4 feats to do so but yes.
