View Full Version : A Comprehensive List of (Official) Playable Races

So, I was trying to look at what I've dubbed the Ubiquitous Darkvision "problem" in 5E, and, as part of that, I wrote up a list of all the races WOTC has released. So I'm sharing it with you guys for reference. Enjoy!

Note: The "official" in the threat title basically means "released by Wizards of the Coast themselves", not necessarily AL legal or fully finalized and balanced; so Unearthed Arcana is in, despite being effectively rough drafts, but Dungeon Master's Guild is not.

Excellent, thank you much for this! You should mention this in Daishain's thread with good stuff (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?377491-Guides-Tables-and-other-useful-tools-for-5E-D-amp-D).
There's an amusing typo with one of the aasimars, btw. :smallwink:

Is the darkvision problem the problem that almost everyone has it? My soon-to-be DM grapples with the same problem daily, and has resorted to putting magical darkness everywhere to allow himself to actually set the mood.

Does s/he realize that darkvision is considered poor lighting? So it's probably no more mood-destabilizing than most lightsources.

Darkvision (p. 185). The definition of darkvision here now matches the definition everywhere else in the game (6th printing).... which would indicate that PCs now have access to the same "darkness becomes dim light / dim light becomes bright light" mechanic as the monsters.

While it's not from core books, Wizards released a free Zendikar (as in the MTG world) supplement for D&D 5e that had more races including (but not limited to) Merfolk and player-balanced Vampires. Not sure if you count that as "official" but it was/is just as official than UA at least.

While I find the Zendikar Vampire amazing, balanced is not how I would described someone who can create zombies from level 1, but if you take this zombification of victims away, it is the perfect Dhampir race!

It still has range limits, and there's little difference to if the party is carrying numerous light sources.

True I suppose. I usually houserule the zombie part away anyway.

I did not know about that one. Added, and thanks for pointing it out!

There is no text in the rules entry that says the Null is under your control.
