View Full Version : Is there an official conversion to "mana" for sorcerers?

I'm going to run a game in a world inspired by Dragonlance. The Curse of the Magi explains that a wizard need to study and prepare spells daily because the gods of magic wipe away the knowledge of the spell upon casting it. Doing so prevents mortal casters from growing to powerful. Sorcerers, similarly, are so drained by their manipulation of magic, that they cannot physically cast more spells than allotted to them.

However, when it comes to sorcerers, I have always thought the power point system is far more appropriate for spontaneous casting. Is there an official resource that has converted spontaneous arcane classes to a "mana" system?

Spell points. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/spellPoints.htm) Although it's not exactly perfectly balanced.

Spellpoints - Why don't we just make the wizard EVEN MORE POWERFUL? What could go wrong?

By which we mean "already weak blasting spells get the shaft, while all the more effective spells scale normally. Oh, and also we just turned prepared casters into superior versions of spontaneous ones."

Your best bet, methinks, is to replace Sorcerers entirely with Psions (change the casting stat to Cha). Marginally more balanced than normal arcane casters, and their powers were designed from the ground up for spellpoints, so everything needs more power points to scale.

Spell points being really strong on wizards isn't really a big deal if you're only using them for sorcerers. The discrepancy with blasting still exists, though.

Spell points, while a good idea, are ABOSLUITLEY terribly implemented. Mostly in that they gimp spells per day in exchange for slightly more flexible casting. Also Sorcerers go from have up to 50% more spells per day to at most 7% more.

You could still do it, just give them a lot more spell points. Like take their spells per day normally and multiply it by spell point cost (IE: 5 MP at level 1, 73 at level 8 etc). Yes it probably would give Sorcerers a lot more spell per day (something like 450 spell points by level 20+ stat mod), but it would be a balance point to Wizards. Sorcerers WOULD have a lot more spell per day and it would be relevant as those spells scale with level, instead of a bunch of low levels ones they might not use.
