There rules for making constructs that attach to you as armor/weapons...

what about making items that turn into constructs.... or constructs that turn into items/weapons that don't attach to you and you can use them like the standard item they become?

Could always animate some shapesand.

Only thing that comes to mind is an intelligent weapon with the flying enhancement (MoF version) and the ability to cast alter self. The enhancement makes it an actual construct rather than just counting as one and alter self lets it turn itself into some other construct.

Thanks flying weapon/animate weapon works nice...... also noticed animate item and general animate all sorts of stuff lol

Though THANK YOU for reminding me of shapesand..... god I love shapesand.

It can be compressed ^.^ *evil laughter*

I'm going to make a Rune Arm with shape sand compartments, so it can come off and release the shape sand and form into a sandstone effigy with a rune arm in it's mouth XD

Looks like this thread was...

Maybe not what OP was looking for, but Stone Horse (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm) maybe?

Construct Grafter (feat) from Faiths of Eberron lets you make construct grafts that you can apply to your body. Dunno if that is what you are looking for?

The Insatiable Locust item from Arms and Equipment Guide turns into the Jade Locust construct.

Jumping Caltrops from Complete Adventurer turn into Jumping Caltrops constructs.

There's probably some other examples around.

Pathfinder has this neat line of text about how a Constructs controller/creator can 'place their hand on the Construct and command it to deactivate for a time'. It's really usefully explicit.
What this means is you can turn your Animated Objects back into regular objects whenever you need to. This is nice for when you want to wield that animated sword while wearing your animated armor.
PF also has the Golem Armor, but it's crap. As written it doesn't even technically work IIRC.

For good ol 3.x we have the Minor Servitor spell from Savage Species. It makes sentient, free willed Animated Objects. Which is fun when you look over at Special Materials and Alchemical Items, both of which are explicitly not magic items and legal targets for Animate Objects/Minor Servitor.
Shapesand Minor Servitor anyone? Nah, we can do better. Awakened Sand from Sandstorm better. Again it makes a sentient, free willed Constructs but hey, they start out Friendly and with some skill boosting we can get that to Fanatic (ELH) easy peasy. Except Fanatic is considered Mind Affecting; guess we'll just have to hit 'em with some Greater Humanoid Essence so they do as they're... er... politely asked to.

These are all, of course rather costly shenanigans, so I suggest only paying for them once either via Resetting Magic Trap or a good ol Spellclock from the Clockwork Wonders online WotC archive.

3.5 also has Golem Armor (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/magicItems/artifacts.htm), but as an artifact.

Yes. Shapesand is the best thing ever.

Anyways, what about effigy symbiots? Would they still be able to latch on and function?

Take the feats, Token Familiar and Construct Familiar, there now you have a construct that can shapeshift into an item.

Effigies lose all special qualities and also lose all special attacks and SLAs that rely upon Constitution to determine the save DC. It keeps special attacks that use Strength or Dexterity to determine the save DC or that do not have a save.
