View Full Version : DM Help Magic items as levels for encounter design

5e never assumes that player characters have magic items, yet Lost Mine of Phandelver hands them out like candy, the other published adventures also have plenty of goodies for the players. This is great and how D&D should be played, the problem is all those extra +1s, spell slots, and various other bonuses add up to more power than the encounter building table in the DMG accounts for.

As the title implies what are some guide lines to bump the characters levels to account for their magic items?

So far I'm working with every cumulative +2 worth of magic weapons is a level, cumulative +1 worth of AC is a level, and every 3 spell slots is a level.

What's the cumulative wisdom of the playground on this?
