One day I lay on a couch, I decided to think about how fast a monk could actually go, regardless of how long he could keep it up. To my suprise it was over 60 mph. This was a human monk, 20th level with expeditious retreat on him and the run feat. 120ft normally, then times 5 for running. Thats 600ft per round, at 10 rounds per minute, which is 6000ft per minute. Slightly more than 60 mph.

Now, because I am not wise in all the ways of DnD, I don't know of very many things that can boost speed, whether race, items, or magic. So I'm wondering, how fast can a monk go?

We'll ignore any side effects of getting up to speed because I want to see how fast a monk could theoretically go, not what forces would rip him apart before he got going.

Geez, almost as fast as a cheetah. As far as I know, the fastest that a real human can run is like 35 mph.

I believe that we were talking about flying anthropomorphic cheetahs (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39423) at one point, and dark shadow xeph cleric/wizard/incarnate/ardent/monks (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2694204#post2694204) at another...

I remember a discussion upon which we got a knight riding on a mount, up to 1/10th the speed of light. I have no clue how, but it involved an insane amount of magical items. I'll see if I can pull it up for you.

As for a monk, I have no clue.

Getting the expeditious retreat can be tricky since it is a personal spell. You'd need to use a wand to get it. It's an enhancement bonus to speed so look for stacking problems. Yep, the monk speed bonus is enhancement too so they don't stack.

The Wizards CO Board is always good for this kind of stuff. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=472241)

And if you don't have Monk levels, you can get the same enhancement bonus from Haste as you could from Expeditious Retreat anyway.

Take a look at the Phantasmal Mount spell sometime. We were travelling all over the place on mounts cast by our party sorcerer. I think we worked out their speed at his level to be just short of 90MPH, and non-tiring.

Another fun trick - a Warforged Scout. Warforged never need to eat, drink, go to the bathroom, or rest, meaning they can run continuously. Scouts ignore effects of terrain, leave no tracks, and eventually get +20 to their movement speed. Throw in the Run and Dash feats, and perhaps Wild Talent followed by Speed of Thought (+10 feet to movement speed while psionically focused). Now you've got a character with a base move of 55 (faster than a heavy horse) that never tires and is not slowed down by adverse terrain, and that's before any magic. Nice little items like a Ring of Water Walking (to cross water), Cloak of Arachnidia (to deal with vertical obstacles), and Boots of Striding and Springing and/or other speed boosting items, and you've got the world's best long-distance courier.

Or you could just use a sending spell or few. As long as you can keep from messing up the amount of words (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0337.html) you use.

Chuck the cloak of Arachnidia and get the Up The Walls feat, it's a static ability so it should work with speed of thought.

I think somebody figured out a monk build that could break the sound barrier on this site.

You're right! Maybe The Giant decided can't was 2 words. The Giant couldn't have made a mistake! It's not possible!
