Looked up the spell tonight, and thought of an abuse. You can scry someone by saying "The locale I choose is the ground on which NPC X stands upon." or "The location I choose is the tip of the spear of mercenary captain Johan."

Which kinda goes into the question - if Scrying doesn't work on objects, what sort of scrying is the Obscure Object spell referring to? Did WotC just forget to put a Scry on Object spell in their book?

Looked up the spell tonight, and thought of an abuse. You can scry someone by saying "The locale I choose is the ground on which NPC X stands upon." or "The location I choose is the tip of the spear of mercenary captain Johan."The wording in the spell (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/clairaudienceClairvoyance.htm) is "a place familiar to you or an obvious one". If you already know where the mercenary captain Johan is standing, then it may be an obvious place. Otherwise, not so much.

" This spell hides an object from location by divination (scrying) effects, such as the scrying spell or a crystal ball. Such an attempt automatically fails (if the divination is targeted on the object) or fails to perceive the object (if the divination is targeted on a nearby location, object, or person). "
Right from Obscure Object (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/obscureObject.htm), although I did add Emphasis. So if you cast Obscure Object on someone's clothing, and then scry on them, you get to see what they've got in their pockets. Quick and easy backscatter X-Ray.

I suspect the wording is because they knew they'd be doing expansions later, and didn't want to rule out the usefulness of such things.

Yeah, there's definitely a scrying spell that's specifically for objects in one of the splat books.

I've been trying to find this, but with no success. :(

Get a Third Eye: Sense (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/items/universalItems.htm#sense), then Clairvoyance somewhere you think they're at, from what you can see you can Clairvoyance another location, from what you can see you can Clairvoyance another location, repeat indefinitely until you find them.

Sorry, I believe I was thinking of the scry location spell from Complete Scoundrel. My bad.
