Not sure if this is actually covered anywhere as an actual rule or not ... so this might just be a general opinion type question ...

My Monk is using Gauntlets of the Talon (Magic Item Compendium pg. 103) which makes his unarmed damage as 5 levels higher ... should he also benefit from the the Superior unarmed strike feat? (Tome of Battle pg. 33)

I thought they might stack because 1 is an item and the other a feat ... but was not sure ... Thoughts?

They SHOULD stack. Untyped bonuses from different sources stack.

This doesn't work. Guantlet's of the Talon says "as if you were a monk of five levels higher than you actually are". So, regardless of what kind of virtual increases you have, those gauntlets don't move the spot they boost you to. It also explicitly says they don't stack with similar benefits (they use the monks belt example, but SUS would also fall under the umbrella). So, on at least two levels, this is a no-go.

These would not stack. These are not bonuses that say "+4 levels for monk unarmed dmg" and "+5 levels for monk unarmed dmg" respectively.

They both take your base monk level and replace it with a different level for calculating your unarmed dmg. Only the only setting it 5 levels higher would take effect, but if that one were removed/dispelled/etc, the one setting it to 4 levels higher would take effect.

They overlap, but do not stack.

you can further stack:

- Monk's Belt: +5 lvl of monk for unarmed
- Monk's Tattoo: +4 lvl of monk for unarmed

They overlap, but do not stack.

really? wasn't aware of that. any source if possible?

Here you go:

This benefit doesn’t stack with similar benefits

As was previously stated, these are not "bonuses" like other "+2 competence to attacks" or "+1 CL", these are "treat your level as...." so they would not fall under the whole bonuses stacking rules.
