Tristram (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnMR6SOBa9k)

The sound of hooves comes to an end as the carriage comes to a halt. You were able to get a few hours of rest before finally arriving. Thunder booms above as lighting briefly paints the sky white. For a split second you can see the town in it's glory but that image is quickly snatched away and replaced with a grim view. The stormy night clouds paint the village in a dark despair. When you first entered the carriage a few hours ago the day was surprisingly calm and vibrant. A nice change of pace for how things have been in the kingdom as of late and yet now, as you exit a carriage with three others whom you jest met, you find yourself in a place that perfectly captures how the kingdom has fallen over the past 10 years.

You are here, in the town called "Tristram." Your carriage pulled into the center of the village near a well and you are greeted by an older man in a gray robe. His hood pulled over to protect his face from the rain. "Welcome," He calls to you. "Please come with me to the Inn." He guides you four to the tavern just a short walk from the well in the town center, you notice the name "The Tavern of the Rising Sun" to be rather odd considering the current state of affairs. Upon entering a middle aged man named Ogden greets you. He seems a happier of sorts and almost gives a glimmer of hope in this darkened town.

You all are able to find a seat as the Old Man introduces himself as Deckard Cain. He gives you a brief overview of the town and its inhabitants, much of it you already know but some of it is news to you. He then divulges the recent history that has plagued Tristram

"This town used to be peaceful until the dark riders came and destroyed our village. Many were cut down where they stood, and those who took up arms were slain or dragged away to become slaves - or worse. The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals. It seems that the Archbishop Lazarus goaded many of the townsmen into venturing into the Labyrinth to find the King's missing son. He played upon their fears and whipped them into a frenzied mob. None of them were prepared for what lay within the Cold Earth...Lazarus abandoned them down there - left in the clutches of unspeakable horrors - to die. The screams that echo in the night are inhuman, but some of our townsfolk may yet survive. Follow the path that lies between this tavern and the blacksmith shop to find the church and save who you can. Perhaps I can tell you more if we speak again. Good luck."

Before you have a moment to ask questions he rises his weary self and leaves the tavern, wishing you all the best. You've all had a good rest before arriving and the urgency of the situation tugs a bit at you for you all to head to the church now rather than later. With nothing unpacked you all set out following the path described by Cain. After a bit of a stroll through the poorly kept countryside you finally come to the grand church. Standing tall with candles and torches still lit inside. Before you could really inspect closer your eyes are drawn to a man just outside the entrance. Lying on the cold hard ground with blood pooling around him.

As you get closer to him you realize his body is covered in deep cuts and one of his legs are chopped off, the bloody stump being the source of most of the blood. He reaches out towards you and begins speaking,

"Please, listen to me. The Archbishop Lazarus, he led us down here to find the lost prince. The bastard led us into a trap! Now everyone is dead...Killed by a Demon he called the Butcher. Avenge us! Find this Butcher and slay him so that our souls may finally rest..."

With what little strength he has left he tells this tale of woe before succumbing to his wounds and dying. Unfortunately no magic is able to save him as he was already lost before you had even arrived.

You push open the doors to the grim Cathedral, following the mans blood trail. The moonlight shines through the mosaic windows and casts a little light into the dimly lit entrance. Thanks to the mans blood you are quick to find some stairs down, leading you into the lower cathedral floors.

Floor 1

You step down the bloody stairs to find yourself in a small room, about 20x20. You find no need to light any torches as the wall sconces already contain lit ones, there has definitely been activity here.
To your left and right are closed double doors. About 20 feet before you is another set of double doors, once again closed.

Three different directions, three different choices. What shall you do?

I went ahead and narrated your whole trek through Tristram and leading to the cathedral. Please roleplay what your characters would do in the different situations described above and ultimately ending in where you are all located now.

Ok so the map itself is on Roll20, I made it myself and am utilizing the dynamic lighting that Roll20 offers. You'll see more of that as you progress. But for now since you all have the same view and to make it slightly easier, I attached the current map view for you guys. I won't really be doing this often but it works easily in this situation so below is the map.

Taking all this in stoically Kristan moves along with the others, rushing to the downed fellows side when they see him and quickly realizing he couldn't save him. He eyes the blood trail and asks "Do we follow the trail?"

Caleb's eyes glance across the floor, looking for signs of disturbance or the passage of other creatures. Looking for tracks in dusty caverns is an entirely different skill than tracking quarry in the forest, but a blood trail makes things a bit easier. "If we try and aim for where that man came from, we're guaranteed to run into something. Which I guess is the goal..." Barely thinking about it, Caleb shifts his feet a bit so his back is more angled towards the others, his shield arm between him and the door next to him. This place has him on edge, and the training to fight in formation dies hard.

Kristan lays a gentle hand on Caleb's shoulder, "I am led to wonder why the blood trail seems to be lessening as we follow it to its possible source and not the other way around." Thinking for a bit after he articulated the thought aloud, "Perhaps whatever took it did so outside the church?"

Alexis McCoy (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=603497)

The long carriage ride had only served to sour the mood of the young woman calling herself Alexis. For most people a journey home would be a joyful occasion, seeing the places and faces of your youth, rekindling old memories and friendships... but not for her, not this time. Over the last decade the lands here had fallen into shadow and despair and life, it seemed, was now no more than a burden, an endless toil plagued by fear and unknown. She didn't know if she had the strength or the resilience to stand and fight... to bring back a glimmer of light into this now-dark kingdom... but she had to try. By either luck, or divine purpose, there were others likewise making the journey to Tristram their eyes set on the evil nesting there; and even if their motives differed from hers they would make stalwart allies all the same.

She was glad to find that a tavern still stood alongside the small town square; she had feared they might be forced to make camp near town, or worse, and exchange shifts on watch for terrors in the night. Chills and disgust mix in an odd sort of chemistry as Deckard Cain details out the recent plights that have befallen the town. Things seemed much worse than she had originally feared. As she begins to gather up her gear once more she sighs and comments to her allies: "A shame he left with such a haste ... I'd have liked to stay a while and listen."

As the group trudges toward the fallen cathedral, she readies her weapon and straps her shield tightly to her armor. "There!" she calls out as the shape of the prone man becomes clear, and rushes to his side. It was a shame they arrived to late to save his life but it would seem his fate had been sealed for some time. "A demon called The Butcher and a trail with enough blood to paint the floor ... at least things wont be starting off boring." She comments dryly as she takes up position near Caleb and takes a second to listen.

Perception : [roll0] Just a casual listen check to see if I can hear any activity going on down here. Mostly to set if Alexis has cursed dice.

Caleb glances back at the others as they confer, careful not to take his eyes off the door for more than a breath. His instincts tell him not to remove his attention from the source of danger, but the more he thought about the blood trail the more convinced he was that the danger may not lie in front of them after all.

"This has been strange since that man left without giving us a chance to ask questions," he says, nodding at Alexis, "And everything we've found so far has just made it stranger. This blood...did any of you see anything unusual about the body?"

If it becomes clear that no danger lurks beyond the doors, about to charge into the room where the group now stands, Alexis turns her attention to the debate about the trail of blood. She inspects the flagstone stairs, worn from use over the years and now glistening with the slick red blood of the unfortunate soul on the grounds above. Not an intellectual by any definition of the word, the warrior had no formal schooling in the matter, but her recent expereinces in combat allowed for a more experience-based conjecture. "Perhaps the reason for the trail starting narrow and then growing wider and thicker..." She begins, as she motions along the trail up and out of the entrance with her warhammer, "is because as time passed his fleeing was slowed by his injury, allowing more blood to pool. I imagine he started by hoping or proping himself along the walls but eventually was forced to succumb to his injuries and forced to crawl along the floor and stairs."

"Well said, M'lady. Then we have naught to do but open the door, yes?" Kristan turns and places a boot on the door and shoves...

As the others converse on the strange irregularities regarding the blood Alexis stops to listen to her surroundings. She can here soft scraping in the background, coming from no direction in particular. Sounds of scuttling around and sounds of metal on stone. The eerie noises makes it clear that the sanctity of this place has been fowled... The conversations though bring Alexis back to the situation at hand and she offers up her suggestions. Her words match up with Caleb's investigations and it seems like the areas of heavier blood most likely had to do where the poor soul had slowed or stopped to rest.

With that in mind Kristin kicks open the door pushing both double doors open. The doors open up into a long hallway but before you could take in your surroundings you all find another grisly sight is plastered all over the worn stone walkway. In front of the door is more blood but immediately after is a large pool of blood with splashes of blood all over the walls and stonework. It would be apparent to anyone that this must have been where the warrior's leg was cleaved off...

Anyone able to take their sights off of the discouraging find would see that the hallway extends further past the blood and opens up into a darkened room with a table and some chairs just in sight. Also, just after some blood splatter there seems to be a doorway on the left hand side...

What will you all decide next?

Wrinkling his nose in disgust, Kristan proceeds down the hallway to stand opposite the small door, waiting for the other to catch up.

Thinking to himself, Doesn't that bring back foul memories. Our lady cleric seems to be a much better investigator than I could hope to be. I'll take up a spot and let her look over the scene.

He stands quietly, listening to the odd sounds within the dungeon, the hairs starting to stand up on the back of his neck. He opens his mind to the divine senses he has, feeling carefully ahead of them.

Fairly certain that she'd come to a logical conclusion, Alexis turns here attention back to the pressing matter of the dungeon lying before them. She takes slow, careful, steps to avoid stepping in the blood as much as possible and stands aside Kristan at-the-ready as he shoves open the door with his boot. Seeing naught but a hallway into the unknown, she relaxes slightly and slowly moves forward as her companions do so. Whether or not the effort is in vain, she tries to approach the next door as quietly as possible--no easy feat for near a half dozen armored warriors mind you.

As they come to a stop near the door, she motions down the hall in the direction of the table. "Clear?" she asks in as quiet a whisper as she can manage before focusing her attention to the door. She leans in slightly and listens for any activity within the room. She's careful not to actually apply any weight to the door itself lest it move within its frame and make noise, open slightly, or worse--trigger some sort of trap.

Caleb nods at the others assessment of the blood stains, and turns to face the door as Kristan opens it. He waits a beat before following his comrade through the door, keeping his shield raised to the left. As the sight--and smell--of the blood grows more intense, his nose wrinkles.

"The demon, or whatever minions did this, have to still be down here," he mutters quietly, worrying about how far his voice will carry. "Or did they fall back to the depths somewhere?"

Alexis gracefully moves down the hallway to follow Kristan, unfortunately no matter how accustomed to her armor that she is the clashing of metal rings causes much noise. Sill, nothing seems to pop out at the group aside from the rats that scurry away. Alexis leans in close to the door, listening intently for anything that could be on the other side. She is unable to hear any noise. Actually it is different than that, it's not that nothing is there it just seems that the potential room on the other side of the door must be very small and there is nothing to hear. Or at least that's what it sounds like from her experience.

Alexis stand her warhammer on end upon the floor beside her to allow for a free hand. She reaches for the handle of the door and, if it is found to be unlocked, turns the handle to open it slightly. She quickly takes up her weapon once again and pushes the door the rest of the way open into the room beyond.

Caleb nods and turns to face down the hallway square on. With no one at his flank to worry about protecting, he raises his shield slightly off-center from the front of his body--ready to angle it against any oncoming strike, without getting in the way of his own sword. With all three of his party behind him, he feels fairly comfortable leaving his back exposed...as comfortable as you can be around demons, at any rate.

"The only ones here?" he mutters as he steps carefully towards the point where the hallway opens. "Not likely, unless that man tore off his own leg..."

Kristan nods for Caleb to head towards the open area and he bravely steps forward unaware of the true danger that may be waiting. As Alexis begins to valiantly push open the door in front of her, sounds of alarm and pain come from Caleb's direction. You all turn to see that some green slime like substance has dropped down and covered Caleb's shoulders and back. The slim eating away at his armor and devouring his skin with acid. Each second is crucial if he is to be saved!

Caleb is first to go and attempt to get this slime off!

NVM initiative doesn't matter in this situation. Act whoever first but limit to just one turn each per round, regarding your actions.

Suddenly fearing for her companions' safety, Alexis forgoes exploring beyond the door and rushes down the primary hallway toward Caleb. She glances around for anything better suited for acid removal than another chair leg but if she cannot find anything she settles for that. She raises a greaved foot and smashes down on one of the remaining legs to break it free, and if successful, begins to use it to scrape at the globs remaining on the man's back.

"Hold still, hold still. Nearly done." She says in a commanding tone that might have been a poor attempt at soothing but failed to come out as such.

Their combined efforts successful remove the slime from Caleb's back, safe once again. It is only then that the three of them realize that they are all now standing in this much darker room, due to Kristan putting out on of the sconces. The dark seems consuming but nothing happens. "It would seem we've played our own part in fouling the sanctity of this place now." Alexis remarks in a bit of dry humor as she holds aloft the metal candelabra, its form now tarnished and misshapen where the acid had done it's due diligence. She places the warped thing back upon the table where she had snatched it from, as if that somehow made things better. "Don't know...didn't get a chance to look..." Before she retrieves her warhammer from the table she mutters a quick incantation and motions a quick gesture to form a spell. "Now is hardly the time nor place to discuss the finer points the clergy." Alexis remarks coldly, focused on the task at hand. She had always been amazed at how little it seemed every day people understood about the workings of the divine. She got the impression that most common folks simply assumed you talked directly to gods or could wave your hands about and bless someone or something at the drop of a hat. Rubbish. She supposed though that much could be said about the arcane; those mysteries were well beyond her comprehension but she hoped that those so gifted didn't see her as carrying the same misconceptions she picked out of others.

"Kitchen?" Alexis mutters in a slightly puzzled tone, clearly expecting something else might have been this direction. "Good a place as any to find a butcher I suppose..." Her words trail off as she begins to wonder what this 'Butcher' might be doing with that poor mans leg, especially in what used to be the temples kitchen. She inspects the hallway for any obvious traps before advancing to the door and giving a listen. Unless she hears something worth giving pause to their advancement, she opens the door.

The group files into the foyer and Alexis pulls open the double doors, finding the kitchen well lit. Ahead is a bar/serving area that wraps around on the groups left hand side. Scattered around the large open room are some tables, dusty old plates still litter their tops. Off to the parties left (maps right) there seems to be a slight hallway branching off and to the front the kitchen begins to narrow slightly.
Whatever food is left and littered around the bar top and tables seems to have molded into a disgusting purple fungi. Nothing else seems to stand out in the room without further investigation.

Draven and Kristin can't really see the opening to the left (maps right). Well Draven can't at all and Kristan can barely see it.

But you guys can see what you do with the map

Maybe we should clean up kitchen so more slime doesn't come?"

"I'd recommend staying away from..." Alexis starts as she enters the room but as she gets closer to the pile of fungi on the bar top she seems to be at a loss of words. "uh.... that." She emphasizes with a general circular motion with her finger toward the unknown purple substance. Assuming she doesn't immediately hear any threats she attempts to start unraveling the mysteries of this room; She checks the tables for any signs of recent use, attempts to discern if there was enough dust on the floor to denote long abandonment or if it seemed commonly traveled, and gives a quick sniff just to see if the air reeked of whatever was on the bar.

Caleb gives a quiet snort as they move into the kitchen. "Believe me, no one needs to tell me twice to avoid any strange...fluids," he says, absent mindedly tapping at one of the holes eaten through his armor by the slime. "Once is more than enough."

He joins the others in searching the room, walking to the corner to get a view of whatever might be hidden behind the bar. His nose wrinkles as he gets closer to the rancid plates. "I'm guessing the door across from the bar takes us deeper in," he says with a nod at the door closest to Alexis. "Do we want to go that way? Or take the other door?"

Seeing no immediate threat the group enters into the dusty old kitchen. The weathered room doesn't seem to have been used in days but it is clear by the leftover food that it was vacated in a rush. Kristen steps forward to inspect the bar and the barrels while Alexis inspects some of the tables with Draven. Caleb enters in further to look behind the bar and see if anything useful is around. As everyone sets up in different areas of the room it is clear that they are once again faced with decisions when it comes to doors. To the south the kitchen narrows into a double set of doors and to the west there is another set of double doors.

Typically there are sounds of scurrying and slight movement through the halls and in the walls but this room seems quiet, almost too quiet... Noise begins to plague your ears as sounds of growth and pulsating fills the room. The fungi on the plates and bar around you triple in size and long tendrils fall from their sides. The smell of rot injects itself into your noses as if the fungus itself came from a freshly rotting corpse.

"I don't think we've got too many loose threads just yet..." Alexis comments, while she investigates the tables and keeps an ear out toward the western doors. "...but certainly a valid concern to keep in mind." She finishes up with one table and begins to inspect the next, not likely to find anything but checking none the less.

Draven rushes towards the nearest fungus to him, one that is standing on the bar near Kristan. As he begins to move towards it though the long tendrils belonging to both of the fungi on tables reach out and slash at Draven with their rotting touch. The one alone on the table to the north misses but the one in front of Alexis hits Draven across his bare back, initially feeling like just a slap but within moments his flesh begins to rot. He moves forward through with a searing might and slams down hard on the fungus in front of him, slicing it in two as well as leaving a substantial crevice in the bar. Splinters fly everywhere as the fungus falls from either side of the bar and flops on the floor.
One down.

The fungus alone to the north seems almost attracted to the smell of Dravens rotting flesh and it moves forward across the table to get him within reach of its tendrils. It lashes out at him attempting to devour him further. It strikes out at him with three tendrils, missing with two but connecting very hard with the third. The blow knocks Draven forward a bit as his whole back begins to rot and flesh starts to peel and fall off. Blood festering and dripping to the floor at his feet.

Meanwhile right in front of Alexis the other fungus leaves draven alone but attacks her, thwacking down at her from the table with all of its might. It misses with its first tendril but then slams into her chest with the second and, barely missing with the third, the chain links unable to keep the rotting touch out. It's necrotic rot spreads throughout her body and causes Alexis to almost collapse to the floor as her whole body begins to deform and rot from beneath her clothes and armor.

Kristan is up followed by Alexis!

One left to go and the thing is feisty! It whips it's tendrils around and starts it's onslaught on Caleb but luckily misses with both of it's tendrils, hitting the bar in front of it.

"Well..." Alexis gasps out, an air of ragged tiredness seeping into her, normally commanding, voice. "...that was certainly more exciting than I was expecting." Her humor a poor attempt to distract the others, and more importantly herself, from the sheer severity of her wounds. But after a brief moment of surveying the globs of fungus among the splintered remains of the table at her feet she decides that the threat has passed for now and relaxes her stance. Brave and in ways somewhat brash group retreats a bit back into the divination room that they explored prior. The fungal attack had left some badly wounded and a rest was needed. All four gather around the table and plop down in their chairs after a hectic battle. Taking the time to get to know each other a little better and conversing on relatable topics but most importantly healing up a bit and tending to the wounded. For a moment all seems almost cheerful in this dry dusty old cathedral, perhaps a call back to its former days. But as the time dwindled on the evident reminder of why each individual was brought here is made apparent once more as the creeping shadows begin to stir once again. The dimly lit hallway plays tricks on the mind as what seems to be there is nothing but the wind. Or maybe they are being watched by some sinister evil waiting for them to delve further in. There is no way to truly know unless one ventures further and so after about an hour everyone seems to be ready to begin their advances again and ready to go.

You all stand from the scrying table and discuss in which direction to continue further.

If the creature falls to the blow she rushes forward and swings at its companion in much the same manner. However; if the creature had endured her blow, she grunts and raises the warhammer for a second swing, hoping that it finishes the job.

With an almost military-like efficiency the group begins to cut through the reanimated horrors. Alexis continues marching forward, looping around the table and flanking the former bowman. Gritting her teeth she raises her hammer and tries once again to bring it to bear. The worry of an arrow lancing out of the darkness and finding purchase in her hide as it had with Draven crosses her mind but she tries not to let it distract her.

Should the skeleton fall to her blow she will raise her shield and face in the direction of the remaining archer.

She admitedly jumps back into a ready stance though when suddenly a roar ripples through the room as it takes half a moment to realize the origin had been one of her companions--apparently tensions had ran high for him as well. "Shhh" she hisses in a sharp, rebuking, tone as she glares directly at Draven.

"We won't get very far if we have to lick our wounds after every other room I'm afraid." She replies solemnly to Kristan's request for a rest. "I've a potion if you need or can knit the wounds with a spell..." She hesitates. "Though I was hoping we'd have made more headway before needing to come to that." As she begins to make her way toward her wounded companion she glances to the floor to see if any of the blood trail from previous rooms was apparent here. "Hmm"

Looking around the room causes the rest of the sconces to light up. It is clear that this was the main gathering hall for worship and sermons. There are a set of doors to the north, the set you entered in from to the south west, then on the east wall there is a set of double doors and a single door. Statues line the east and west walls leading to the south where there are two larger statues and an alter. Two braziers are found to be lit on either side of the alter.

On the alter are an assortment on 4 different gems. Two are an opaque blue, one a transparent pale yellowish brown color, and another is a dim yellow.
There is also a glass bottle on the alter that contains a clear liquid inside except for a tiny red bead in the center. The bead slowly grows over the course of a minute until it is the only color contained within the glass walls. After a few moments though it slowly contracts back into a tiny little bead of red.
Lastly there is a Handaxe resting on the alter. It does not appear spectacular in any way on it's own but if Caleb were to compare it to his own he would be quick to note that the ones he is carrying seem almost dull and flimsy compared to this new one.

Different tapestries telling the history of this land line the walls as well, in between the statues. Nothing of worth but interesting none the less.

The skeletons, upon closer inspection, seem to have local garb of the soldiers who fought under King Leoric, your fellow soldiers..... How their bodies reached back here let alone rise from the dead is unknown to you but it is clear that these are potential former friends although who they were while alive in unknown.

A DC 11 Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion check is required for the knowledge on the gems.
Gems:
- The opaque blue can be inspected as Jasper
- The transparent pale yellow can be inspected as Citrine
- The yellow one can be inspected as Quartz
Each worth 50gp.
Everything else i'll let you guys figure it out :smallwink:

The battle is over. So glorious. Draven wanders around the room, half lost in thought. Was that harder than the bear? Hard to tell. The others did quite a bit of work...but there were so many of the skeletons...oh, what's this? he asks himself as he views the tapestries. "Ahhhh, look friends. This tells the tale of a wonderful history. My people don't write down our history. We speak it from one to another so it is never lost, so it is never misunderstood. The Keepers start as children, and repeat back the stories word for word to their master."

Draven spends quite a bit of time looking at the tapestries, though not really understanding a lot of the story. They are well made, however. He thinks. Not a lot of tapestries in a nomadic village. They probably would make great blankets, however.

Calinero
2017-03-21, 07:36 AM
Caleb looks from Draven to the tapestries, then gives a small snort. "Your way sounds more interesting than ours," he says. "I'd rather listen to stories at a campfire than stare at a tapestry." He shakes his head and surveys the rest of the room. Walking past the gems, he strides to the handaxe and lifts it up, testing its balance in his hands.

"This could come in handy," he says, giving it an experimental twirl in his hand. "I suppose it could have come from one of these soldiers...but not sure they would put it on the altar..." He raises a brow and looks at the others. "Think it's safe to take? And does anyone have any idea what's in that bottle?"

"Must be quite an honor to carry the history of your people--to spend every day taking on more and more of the burden for the good of all." Alexis says, genuinely curious in this practice and wondering how many keepers the tribe might have; she reckons there ought to be at least a few at any given time, but there was always the chance it was a burden for a single person. She nods slightly at Caleb when he comments about tapestries.

"No idea what this is though." She holds up the strange vial, being extremely careful with it, and tries to get a better look at the strange bead inside. "I would take extreme care with it in the meantime."

Afterwards, she pokes around at the set of gems and starts noting a rough estimate at the value of each. Though she's not sure if anyone in the battered town above was particular focused on buying finery at the moment--stranger things have happened she supposed.

Draven responds to Alexis' comment. "The Keepers are the most revered of the Dohlmini," he says solemnly. "The have wisdom beyond anyone. They can help people when they have problems. Like trying to figure out the best way to do something. They share the knowledge of our ancestors when we need it most. At festivals, they tell us of the great deeds that have brought the Dohlmini to the greatness they are today." In his recount, Draven sounds both proud and sad.

Draven nods agreement with Caleb. "Must be the demon. Ate the skin off their bones and put them to work. That's what demons do."

He picks up the strange vial again, taking a moment to watch it again as it expands and contracts, then gingerly places it into her belt pouch. "Ready." She says gathering up her pack and moving back across the room, taking another long look at the tapestries as she does so. 'The loss of life is tragic and unforgivable, but I wonder how much knowledge and history might become lost with the desecration of such a place..." She wonders to herself in quiet contemplation.

"Do you suppose this door leads back to the entry way?" she asks, taking up position at the northern door and listening for any danger beyond. "Three left turns may have brought us back around." Unless anyone objects, she'l wait for the group to be ready before opening the door.

Gathering up the gems and vial unless anyone else expresses interest to do so.

Waiting for the group to be ready and then opening northern door. Unless another plan is formed.

Caleb nods and moves up next to Alexis, ready to help take point.

"It's possible," he says, "But if it does, at least we'll have eliminated one of the possible paths. Either way, we'll learn something."

He readies himself for Alexis to open the door.

"One way is good as any other, I think." The young barbarian nervously shuffles from foot to foot and adjusts his grip on his sword several times while the group talks.

Assuming that the door does, in fact, lead back into the foyer where they had first descended into the depths Alexis simply scans the room quickly before turning back to her companions. "Should we loop back around and check the other doorway leading from the kitchen? Or should we try the other door here?" She asks the group.

Upon entering into the room Kristan finds an empty robing room. It seems this is where the clergy would prepare and get ready for any events that the church would host. There are a few bookshelves in the room and some "closets" hanging old tattered robes. The center table has some papers littered about detailing songs and agendas for past events.

To the north is a door and to the south is an open hallway.

"Well what do you know, more door's it seems." Kristan says sarcastically even though he is enjoying this immensely.

He doesn't take a lot of time to investigate, that just wasn't his thing. He moves to the open doors to get a better look and to help watch while the others looked around this room.

Once it becomes apparent that the room poses no immediate threat Alexis enters and takes a better look around. Shooting a wary glance to the south to make sure nothing lurked there, she makes her way toward the table at the center of the room. She sets her hammer upon the table and begins to flip idly through some of the paperwork. "I wonder if there are any clues as to what happened here..."

Alexis enters the room illuminating the hall to the south. Kristan notices it turns to the east after about 15 feet. The others follow Alexis into the room and begin to examine any details that could be a clue as to the situations within. There doesn't seem to be much here though, just routine weekly services and different events. Although some articles dating closer to the present seem to detail many events surrounding the king or his subjects. Maybe if there was a visitors log of some sort that may give a better idea but with just the information presented not much can be gleaned.

"Not much of use I'm afraid." The woman mumbles as she finishes up with the scattered papers, notes, and ledgers. If there are any writing supplies that seem usable she'll scoop them up as they might end up being quite useful; any vials of ink, still usable pens, or even parchment still in decent shape that is either blank or still has one usable side.

Once finished, she'll turn her attention to the other areas of the room; particularly the small closets with hanging robes. She makes note whether all the robes are the same or if there appeared to be a 'head' priest or something similar. Hefting the weight of her hammer once again, she does her best to keep the light usable for everyone.

"Leaving through that hallway is our best bet I'd assume."

Moving around the table on the Alexis's side Kristan says "That's a hallway with a turn east. We should not leave too many closed doors behind us. Nothing useful then?" as he moves to the doors in the North part of the room.

After Alexis tells him what she finds he asks, "Don't you think we'd better check this one out first?" As he prepares to open the north doors.

Draven looks at the piles of paper scattered throughout the room. "Paper is evil. Not just because it is here in evil temple. Trees die for it. Beautiful trees. Another reason Keepers are a better idea."

As he looks around the room, he remembers a few of the past few rooms and becomes suspicious. He takes the tip of his sword and pokes at the robes hanging in the closet.

"Trees are felled for all sorts of things..." Alexis starts, an air of genuine concerns creeps in at the edges of her voice even as her face doesn't seem to show it. "...that doesn't make those things inherently evil." She places her hammer back upon the table so that she had a hand free since she had the tendency to emphasize her statements with motions. "I'd wager that trees felled to fashion spears used to slaughter scores of people ... or those used to fashion siege engines responsible for leveling towns ... are far more of an evil that a priests notes about needing more carrots for soup soon." She holds up a twice-creased sheet of parchment which seemed to in fact be little more than a shopping list for foodstores that needed resupply, using it to punctuate her argument. She holds it aloft for a few seconds for emphasis before placing it back upon the stack and then uses her knuckles to knock twice on the table. "Or is every wooden table in the realm evil?"

She reclaims her hammer and turns her attention to the bookshelves.

Draven stops and stares at the wall as brain cells start to fire sequentially after listening to what Alexis had to say. What she said did make sense when she put it that way...but tables and spears, they were a normal part of life. Lovingly created by craftsmen and could endure for generations. It was an honor for a tree to be put in service in this manner. The brain cells exhausted themselves at this point and shut off, but that had never held Draven back in the past.

This paper stuff...it must take serious magic to create that. Turn something so noble into something so flimsy, so easily destroyed. Then to insult it even further by writing something so trivial on it. If you want to know how many carrots you have, look at the carrots. Count them. How barbaric. He just looks at Alexis and nods, saddened by her limited view of the world.

"Alexis, I don't think he meant any offense by it."

"No. Imagine not." Alexis responds with a genuine tone, turning her head over her shoulder toward the others, pausing her quick study of the bookshelves' contents for a brief moment.

She hadn't taken offense to the statement and she knew that the man didn't mean offense by it. It was an important point though and one that warranted concern; she knew that other cultures held value in different ideals and she knew there were tribes that saw the world though an entirely different lens. With that said however, fear and disgust were powerful tools that could hold a people back or steer them down the wrong path entirely. A lifetime in service of the church and recent tenure on the battlefield had hammered this home more than any amount of study ever could have hoped. To so casually label something as evil and avoid it entirely without consideration of all factors in play was a terrible injustice to oneself and to the world.

'I fear before too long we'll all see what form evil truly takes and it wont be sloppy penmanship' She thinks to herself as she turns her attention back to the spines of the books.

Kristan opens the north set of doors to lead to another hallway full of doors. It seems the first start of this cathedral had many private areas and did not want anyone wandering where they didn't belong. To the north, east, and west are another set of doors. It is safe to assume that the ones to the west would lead back into the main cathedral sanctuary.

He finds himself gripping his sword and shield out of habit as voices raise--not from any honest belief that violence will break out, but simply from training. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such forces. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type (celestial, fiend, or undead) of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity (the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, for instance). Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the hallow spell.
