When spells have an XP cost associated, how does that affect the cost that a player would pay Random Sorceror A (whose XP really doesn't matter that much in the context of the campaign).

For instance, the spell permanency on Enlarge Person has a cost of 500 XP. I know the GP cost is usually based off Caster Level and Spell Level, but how does the XP factor in?

Five gp for every XP, as I recall.

EDIT: Here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/goodsAndServices.htm#spell) we are. So, it'll be 500 gp base cost (10th level sorcerer, since it's a 5th level spell, times fifty gp), plus 2,500, makes it 3,000 even. It would be 2950 if you went to a ninth level wizard instead.

You know, we have a special thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45885) just for questions like this one...

Ooh, and Jack Mann edited his post, which leaves me with nothing to do, really. Nothing, that is... except quote!

The cost given is for a spell with no cost for a material component or focus component and no XP cost. If the spell includes a material component, add the cost of that component to the cost of the spell.

If the spell has a focus component (other than a divine focus), add 1/10 the cost of that focus to the cost of the spell. If the spell has an XP cost, add 5 gp per XP lost.

And you are under no obligation to use it.

Note that spells that have an XP or material cost and a total cost over 3000 are generally not available, anywhere.

Also, this raises an interesting point... as a DM, how should you balance NPCs casting high xp- or material-cost spells at the players? Obviously having every evil NPC wizard they encounter throwing around forcecage, limited wish, and Wish like candy is a bit absurd...

Indeed. A good DM will make his NPCs hesitant to cast such spells, using them only when it's clearly needed, or the rewards are worth it--just as the players should use the spells.
