You find yourselves in a tattered field of a poor farmer a few leagues east of Daggerford on the edge of the Misty Forest.

You impressed Duchess Morwen of Daggerford in your first outing as a group for which you were justly rewarded. She then asked you to investigate claims of werewolves attacking farms in the area during full moons.

Locals report that the beasts are spilling out of the forest, draped in mist that seems to follow them along the ground as they spread death and mayhem.

And so you find yourselves a few hours before dusk on the night before the full moon investigating the scene of last month's attack. Farmer Yarnell was killed on this site last month, his widow is holed up in the farm house to the south of the field and there are numerous beast tracks funneling toward a breach in the post and rail fence to the east towards the forest.

Beiro says, "Thank you for the light friend." and examines the tracks, trying to distinguish between the tracks of regular beasts and the unnatural kind they are on the hunt for.

Marcia bends down and examine's the tracks over Beiro's shoulder. "Lycanthropy is fascinating, really. There are relatively few creatures capable of changing their shape naturally, and most of them have to remain the same general size. But Lycanthropes not only get larger, but stronger too. It's a shame about the mental effects, without them lycanthropy would be an interesting option for increasing the stamina and strength of soldiers and workers. I wonder if something couldn't be done about that. Marcia pauses, briefly, to take a breath. "On the other hand finding and detaining a subject of study would be both logistically and ethically problematic..." She continues speaking as her eyes dart over the tracks, her sentences becoming increasingly technically detailed as she speculates on possible solutions to lychanthropy.

"...silver and mercury based alchemical compound? No..."

I don't know if you want to have me roll, because Beiro already is, but I'd like to use my Natural Explorer feature to know their number, size, and how long ago they passed through the area.

The ground in the field is soft. It is early winter, the crops have been harvested and the field is mostly now just turned dirt.

There are numerous boot tracks from the farmhouse and roadway to the left, likely neighbors who came to assist, none of these tracks go past the fence.

Beiro notices many wolf tracks, and a few barefoot humanoid footprints, they are small perhaps from a halfling or human child. There are also some bestial tracks which Beiro is unable to identify but assumes are the werewolves they have come seeking.

Marcia estimates the boot tracks come from the same 3 or 4 humans, there appear to be about a dozen wolves leaving tracks, 1-2 barefoot humanoids, and 2-3 creatures leaving the bestial tracks. The tracks are several weeks old, all but the boot tracks lead off through the broken fence towards the forest.

Ramsus
2017-02-28, 01:00 PM
Beiro points out the tracks to any of the others who don't have the skill to identify them on their own, hoping to teach them maybe a little bit and suggests, "I believe these ones are the ones we should be following." pointing out the strange beastial tracks.

He shakes his head at Marcia's words and replies, "The essence of what makes them what they are is an upset of the natural order. It is a disease with no cure but to kill those infected with it. I would suggest not trying to put such a thing to use, that would be a dangerous path to tread."

Andrei casts a sideways glance at Beiro, "It almost sounds as if you are sympathetic to these beasts. They are merely monsters now, no more deserving of sympathy than a rabid wolf or the walking dead."

Kwaj

"Once they were men," Sandu says quietly, lifting his hand to light the way as he strides towards the broken fence. "Some part of them may be still. Death is not the worst end to life."

Zap! Hops daintily along avoiding the deeper mud holes, and making sure to stay with the rest of the group. She picks up her pace a little bit to skip up towards Sandu and Andrei and says, "It's a shame about the mental effects..." followed by the sound of a small animal crying for emphasis.

Lord Ruby34
2017-02-28, 06:20 PM
What is the natural order then? And what exists outside of it? Magic and potential suffuse all the planes of existence, waiting to be discovered and explored. While the mental effects preclude Lycananthropy from usefulness today, the same was likely thought about the uncontrolled power of evocation magic, until it was harnessed by responsible hands. Marcia shakes her head to clear it. It's a problem for another day though. Without a living test subject practical knowledge isn't possible, and the ability to ethically acquire one is not currently in my possession. For now, Beiro and Sandu are both correct. A merciful death is the only practical option.

Marcia trails her hand along the fence, wishing the break was small enough that she could mend it with her magic. "At least two of the Lycanthropes came through here, and there's someone with them."

Ramsus
2017-02-28, 08:32 PM
Beiro mutters under his breath, though still loud enough to hear, "Lycanthropy is disease born from a curse. Can't get more unnatural unless it came from rutting with demons."

cobaltstarfire
2017-02-28, 09:10 PM
Zap! cranes her head sideways towards Beiro as only a bird could do and says CUUUUUUUUURSSSSEEED in what sound suspiciously like a pirates voice, then appends more crying sounds as if the emphasize that few people ask to be cursed. She stops making sound as abruptly as she started, ending with a sharp clatter of her beak snapping shut.

"Rutting with demons does seem like it would quite naturally lead to a curse of some sort, or some sort of extra-planar disease..." Marcia exhales as she follows Sandu into the woods. As she walks the words "painful" and "unpleasant" stand out from her half muttered ramblings.

Kwaj
2017-02-28, 10:27 PM
"...wait." Sandu pauses in a small clearing, not far into the forest. "Weres...they do not take prisoners. Whose are the other tracks?"

Lord Ruby34
2017-03-01, 01:37 PM
"A handler, perhaps? An enchanter of some kind influencing their thoughts?" Marcia pauses for a moment and shrugs. "Atypical behavior is also a possibility."

Kwaj
2017-03-01, 04:31 PM
Sandu grunts his acquiescence. Marcia is half his age, but he knows she has forgotten more than he has ever learned. If she says the lycanthropes are being led by a humanoid, then it is likely so.

"Best be on our guard, then," he says, scanning the dark trees. "These weres will be more dangerous with a mind to guide their claws."

tieren
2017-03-01, 04:35 PM
The tracks lead deeper into the forest. They are following what appears to be an old game trail. The tracks of other beasts intermingle sometimes, deer, rabbit, fox, etc...

The tracks you are following intermingle and cover each other from time to time. In some places you see no humanoid or bestial tracks, but pick them up again a little further down the trail.

After about an hour Marcia is certain there are 2 small humanoids and 2 werewolves. The precise numbers of wolves is near impossible to determine, some appear to leave or join the main group from time to time and it is clear the pack has traversed this trail since the original tracks were left. In fact it is clear 8 wolves traveled the area of the trail you are now on no more than 24 hours ago.

As you follow the trail the sun begins to set and evening is upon you. A light mist has begun to form in the low lying places as the days relative warmth leaves the air.

The trail crosses an open area in the woods roughly circular and about 50 feet in diameter. Near the center is the unearthed roots of a great fallen oak, whose trunk and branches reach off across the ground to the northwest. The thick trunk and upturned roots create an area of relative shelter where the tree once stood.

The tracks seem erratic through the clearing, it seems all of your quarry spent time here milling about or coming and going in different directions.

Kwaj

"I don't like this," Sandu murmurs, his voice almost a growl. The hairs on the back of his neck are standing on end. "I've walked into my share of ambushes before.

tieren

Sandu looks about the clearing and the fallen tree but doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary or any watching eyes. The forest has quieted from the activity of the day residents and the nocturnal creatures are just beginning to stir.

The light mists have grown thicker, now laying across much of the ground and underbrush. Everything within 30 feet of you is relatively clear but beyond that the world is lightly obscured by the dimming light and mists.

Zap! hops onto a low hanging branch as a perch and peers about the clearing, she notices a large owl on a high branch nearby, a small group of ravens and some strange bundles protruding slightly from the hollow where the tree once stood.

Zap! tilts her head sideways, and lets out a several convincing and loud ravens alarm calls.

She peers down at the group and says in a small gnomish voice "well that's odd", and moves around in the tree so she isn't easily visible from the clearing.

2017-03-01, 06:40 PM
All but one of the ravens fly off in a noisy panic.

The one that is left flits to a higher branch and faces towards the clearing cocking it's head to the side.

Marcia reaches down and snaps her dangling goggles into place. The moonlit scene transitioned into grey-scale to her as the magic of the goggles instantly changed how Marcia's eyes processed light. Carefully, she eases her gun from the harness holding it diagonally across her back. ""I believe we have reports of the Lycanthropes arriving cloaked in mist. Be on your guard. If that mist hides the ones that we were following it should be two Lycanthropes and a pair of humaniods."

The base of the tree catches Marcia's attention, and she attempts to find anything interesting nestled in it's askew roots without leaving the bubble of safety provided by her companions.

At the raven's cry a werewolf quickly rose from the hollow under the tree trunk. It looks at the party, gives off a howl, then scoops up what appears to be a human child clothed in rags in each arm and dashes away to the east into the fog.

Before you can react you hear answering howls from all directions and rustling in the underbrush as beasts rush towards you.

You are all keenly aware you have mere moments before they are upon you.

"Spirits above and below," Sandu murmurs, passing his hand over his shield. The scales of Kelemvor engraved on it seem to glow dimly in the darkness. "Lend me your aid."

A nimbus of faint ghostly light seems to coalesce about Sandu's armor, shifting and twirling like fog. He draws his spear and steels himself for battle.

"It seems that they did take prisoner's this time. That might suggest a higher degree of awareness than is usually found in Lycanthropes. Interesting." While speaking, Marcia backpedals into the center of her group of allies, swiveling her gun around to fire at the first available target.

Suddenly a large werewolf appears emerging from the mists to the east heading directly towards Beiro.

As soon as it is visible, both Zap! and Marcia fire upon it. Zap!'s firebolt strikes it in the chest singing its fur [9 dmg] but Marcia's shot goes wide and misses.

The werewolf bounds forward attacking Beiro with tooth and claw...but neither attack finds purchase past Beiro's armor and shield.

Andrei may make an Attack of opportunity against wolf 3 or 4, Marcia may make an attack of opportunity against wolf 6 with her rapier, and assuming 6 survives Marcia it is going to run through Beiro's threatened spaces and he will also get an attack of opportunity.

Marcia looks into the hollow at the base of the tree and sees what is likely the wolves den.

There are two bundles of clothes, that appear to be simple peasant garb in greys and blues. One of men's clothing and one of woman's clothing.

At the back of the den she sees a wooden box with a hinged lid, not a chest though, more like a toolbox. On the ground besides the box are a couple of children's toys, broken and chewed.

A few hundred feet from the clearing the barefoot humanoid tracks resume and the bestial tracks are less pronounced. It's been a few minutes since the last time you heard any sign of the wolves.

The tracks lead off to the north and east, but the elevation is rising slightly and the ground is rockier. You do not appear to be following the game trail any longer and dead branches continually reach out of the fog to slow your progress as does underbrush and gnarled roots.

Lord Ruby34
2017-03-09, 04:36 PM
"The children haven't turned tonight, and have so far been unharmed. It is likely that the parents were turned recently, and while they have been spreading death and destruction over the area they retain just enough control over their base instincts to protect their own offspring, at least for now." Marcia takes her eyes off the tracks leading deeper into the forest. "There is no data that suggests how long that state of affairs will last. It could hold forever... or only for minutes longer before their minds deteriorate completely. In either event we do not posses the resources to cur them of their affliction, and for the good of everyone nearby, those two children, and the shattered souls of their parents we have a duty to pursue them and stop them from hurting or killing anybody else." Memories of her own parents sacrifice lend a melancholy undercurrent to Marcia's words. "I have no doubt that if the parents were still of sound mind, they would agree."

The tracks lead on to the top of a flat boulder on top of a low rise. No one in the party is able to see where the tracks pick up again, it is as if they just disappearred into the fog.

The ground has been growing more steep and you believe you are near the top of a small hill, but still can't see more than 20-30 feet in any direction.

Nothing about the terrain you have been covering seems right from what you observed about the terrain from way back at the farm. It almost feels like you are climbing a low mountain pass but there shouldn't have been anything like that around for days worth of travel.

You are lost, this is particularly troubling to Marcia who was fairly certain she couldn't get lost.

Your characters don't have anyway of knowing this without discussing it with each other, but you each hear screams that sound as if they were made by a member of your particular race.

This is especially troubling for Zap!, who doesn't hear a mimicry of a scream but a visceral guttural vocalization of pain, suffering, and lament from another kenku.

As you stumble forward the fog gets thicker and thicker until all visibility is lost. Shortly thereafter you emerge from a bank of fog into an area of relative clearness. Before you lies a muddy roadway. Giant trees loom on both sides of the road.

Behind you the fog spills out of the forest swallowing up the road.

The shrieks are coming from the darkness a little further up the road. As you get closer you see huge stone buttresses looming grey in the night. Huge iron gates hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the rusted bars. Two headless statues of armed guardians flank the gate, their heads now lying among the weeds at their feet.

The gate on the right is slowly swaying on its ancient hinges, as if in a breeze you do not feel. With every sway the hinges emit another shriek, sounding unmistakable to you as a scream of a member of your race.

"We are cautious because we know where we are and the dangers of this realm, can you say the same? We have come to speak with you, but many a traveler has fallen prey to a false appearance, caution is wise."

"I am Anton, my friend here is Uri, we are in charge of the safety of this company."

While Anton is speaking a young woman emerges from the second wagon and runs up to Uri and whispers something in his ear then jogs back to the wagon.

Uri then says, "stand easy Anton, Madame Eva has seen them in a vision, they are the new toys of the Devil Strahd."

the Devil Strahd, a vampire of considerable age and power.

This entire land and everyone and everything in it is cursed,
including you. Strahd has long since grown bored with the diversions available here and occasionally brings new heros,
like yourselves into Barovia to challenge and entertain him.

There are some who say he himself seeks release of the curse through his own death but has been unable to find anyone worthy to the deed.

If you ever hope to leave this land you will need to grow powerful, find ancient knowledge, enchanted weapons, and even allies to confront and destroy the vampire lord. Madame Eva will be able to divine more to help you on your quest, but first we much reach our camp by the Tser pool down in the valley so she can prepare for such a ritual. The Vishanti travel with you into the village of Barovia. It is a drab dour looking town full of drab dour looking people. Most don't even seem to notice the caravan's passing although it is the only thing using the streets, no other carts or wagons or horses are seen.

Anton directs you to a large building in the center of town he tells you is an inn owned by some of their "cousins" who will let you some rooms.

It is now almost evening so you enter the inn, meet the owners and get some rooms for the night.

Tomorrow you will begin to explore Barovia.
Tonight level all of your characters to Level 4.

I am going to have them tell you the common knowledge history of Barovia and how it and strahd came to be cursed (DC10 knowledge), but its kind of lengthy and I want to copy it more or less from the book so will put up tonight.

In life, Strahd von Zarovich was a count, a prince, a soldier, and a conqueror. After the death of his father, King Barov, Strahd waged long bloody wars against his family's enemies. He and his army cornered the last of these enemies in a remote mountain valley before slaying them all. Strahd named the valley Barovia, after his deceased father, and was so struck by the scenic beauty that he decided to settle there.

Queen Ravens via lamented the death of Barov and was fearful of Strahd. War had made him cold and arrogant. She kept her younger son, Sergei, away from the battlefield. Strahd envied the love and attention his mother visited upon his brother, so in Barovia he remained. Peace made Strahd restless, and he began to feel like his best years were behind him. Unwilling to go the way of his father, Strahd studied magic and forged a pact with the Dark Powers of the Shadowfell in return for the promise of immortality.

Strahd scoured his conquered lands for wizards and artisans, brought them to the valley of Barovia, and commanded them to raise a castle to rival the magnificent fortresses of his ancestral homeland. Strahd named the castle Ravenloft, after his mother, to demonstrate his love for her. When it was completed he commanded his mother and brother to come to Barovia and stay with him. Sergei eventually took up residence at Ravenloft, but Ravens via passed away while traveling to her namesake. In sorrowful disappointment Strahd sealed his mother's body in a crypt beneath the castle.

Strahd's attention soon turned to Tatyana, a young Barovian woman of fine lineage and remarkable beauty. Strahd believed her to be a worthy bride, and he lavished Tatyana with gifts and attention. Despite Strahd's efforts she instead fell in love with the younger, warmer Sergei. Strahd's pride prevented him from standing in the way of the young couples love, until the day of Sergei and Tatyana's wedding, when Strahd gazed into a mirror and realized he had been a fool. Strahd murdered Sergei and drank his blood, sealing the evil pact between Strahd and the Dark Powers. He then chased Sergei's bride to be through the gardens, determined to make her accept and love him. Tatyana hurled herself off a castle balcony to escape Strahd's pursuit, plunging to her death. Treacherous castle guards, seizing the opportunity to rid the world of Strahd forever, shot their master with arrows.

But Strahd did not die. The Dark Powers honored the pact they made. The sky went black as Strahd turned on the guards, his eyes blazing red. He had become a vampire.

After slaughtering the guards, Strahd saw the faces of his mother and father in the thunder clouds looking down and judging him. He had destroyed the family bloodline and doomed all of Barovia. The castle and the valley were spirited away; for Strahd and his people there would be no escape.

After waking and having a brief breakfast Beiro walks around the town to see what it's like and what services the people have to offer. In particular he's keeping an eye out for a set of plate armor and an opportunity to earn it, though he doubt even if he and his companions pooled their money they couldn't afford to simply purchase such armor.

As you wander town you are struck by what a sad place it is. the buildings and the few people you see on the streets all seem drab and grey, even a little crooked as if a heavy gloom were literally pressing down on them.

Many buildings are boarded up and the walls of many buildings bear strange marks that look suspiciously like claw marks.

With the exception of "Bildrath's Mercantile" and the "Blood of the Vine Tavern" all the shops in the village are permanently closed and the unoccupied shops have been looted of anything valuable.

[Bildrath's sells only the items on the Adventuring Gear table on page 150 of the PHB, but only those items listed as costing under 25 gp and he sells them at ten times the price listed (such as a bulls eye lantern for 100 gp)]

After his walk about town Beiro will return to the others and shakes his head sadly if they look in his direction. He goes to talk to the traveling group and see if they have any goods, mainly out of curiosity at this point.

The Vishanti pushed through after dropping you off last night to make their camp by the Tser pool, they are no longer in town.

By your inquiries you learn that the Vishanti are the only ones able to leave Barovia and the only ones able to bring goods in, so what few shops exist depend on them for additional wares.

Marcia wanders the town, asking highly technical questions about the nature of the curse that afflicts Barovia and the specifications for breaking it, or at least the name of who might be able to answer her questions.

Zap! spends her time wandering aimlessly looking for scrap metal to play with. In particular if she finds any she'll be fusing it all together with shocking grasp, and then probably melting it until the trace elements all boil away in frustration when none of them come out looking pretty, interesting, or even shiny unless she copies something she's seen before.

If she can't find any metal she'll eventually return to the inn and simply sulk.

Your technical questions are met with only blank stares. A few people spit on the ground make a hand gesture and damn the wereravens. A very few people suggest speaking with Madam Eva of the Vishanti, but suggest being very wary of your coin purse in their camp. One or two people mention they have no idea but you could try asking the Burgomaster.

You notice as you wander about scavenging bits of metal that the towns people give you a wide berth, even crossing streets to avoid you. Several times you notice people spitting on the ground and gesturing in your direction. No one comes even close to directly confronting you though.

By dinner time you have all returned to the inn. There you find a young man wearing what were once the fine clothes of a nobleman, though they now appear faded and worn with time. He has a desperate look in his eyes and has made no effort to hide the fact that he has been asking after and looking for you.

The owners gesture you towards the gentleman informing you he has been seeking you.
