View Full Version : D&D 3.x Other Ritual System for 3.5, hoping for advice

Long story short, I'm working on a homebrewed ritual magic system for D&D 3.5, though it could be adapted readily enough to Pathfinder (in fact, the rules would probably be slightly cleaner that way due to how PF handles skills). I've got a set of rules for it, and some content, and now need people to rip into it and show me the glaring mistakes I've made so that I can hopefully fix them. To that end, I'm putting up what I've got thus far, in hopes of advice, critique, or other such help.

My intent is, as in 4E, to allow anyone (even non-spellcasters) to use rituals, in some cases weaving the rituals into the existing skills. After all, if you live in a world with magic locks and unlocking spells, why wouldn't a sufficiently well-trained lockbreaker know how to pick a magic lock or use a form of magic to pick locks, for example?

Ritual system rules (https://docs.google.com/document/d/150vx4b725NyjbC_kbBIyKMzRINEprxT-WlbhUJLNWTE/edit?usp=sharing) - The current version of the rules, stated a bit less formally than their final version would be, and probably not formatted at all well.

Tabled list of rituals (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YeCEswJGotZCjXSocjQUxKj2aw0yN-SKxcxePY_A808/edit?usp=sharing) - Most of these are just ritual versions of existing spells, and function as the spell except for being rituals, costing money, and taking longer to cast. Assume pretty much everything that's listed here but not in the ritual description text is as the spell and requires no check.

Rituals (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CvgZ-w7JB_pke0ZuD9Jwx7fqzuaZuWHcj9u15KkJkfM/edit?usp=sharing) - The actual text of some rituals, including original creations that have no analogous spells. I intend to eventually also add anti-scrying wards to the Siegeward family of rituals, but they'd follow similar lines to what's there (with the possible option at the high end of allowing the sensor but giving it false input).

Thanks in advance for any help!
