View Full Version : Banning all but one school

So I had an idea of having a group of wizards my PCs will go up against that are all absolute masters of each school of magic. I know you can easily ban 3 schools with the Focused Specialist class variant. But that leaves 3 more. or in the case of a Diviner 5 more. What I'm really driving at is is there a way to ban more schools to get more useful things out of them?

As mentioned in another thread, Red Wizard of Thay PrC forces you to ban another school and Incantatrix forces you to ban yet another school.

Changeling Wizard lets you dual-specialize at the cost of giving up three schools, which would become four with Focused Specialist.

Incantrix gives up an extra school (can't be Abjuration, and can't have Abjuration banned).

So I that gets you down to Abjuration, Divination, and Transmutation. But beyond that point, I don't know how you'd get rid of the the other two, especially since you can't generally ban Divination.

Also, as far as "for a purpose", the Changeling Wizard isn't really helping you any more once you get rid of Illusion.

Edit: Ninja'd.
With Red Wizard in the mix (taken after Incantrix), you can get rid of Abjuration too. Not technically a requirement for Incantrix, so you won't lose those abilities.

The Restricted Sorcery flaw from Dragon #327 gives you any two non-Divination schools as banned schools, but requires "Ability to cast spells without preparation", so you need either a level in a spontaneous class or something to give you the ability to spontaneously cast with your wizard slots.

OTOH, if you have three bad guys, instead of making them wizards you could make them beguiler, dread necromancer and warmage?

Or just have the wizards take spell focus and greater spell focus and only choose to memorize spells from one school?

If you're the DM, you could just homebrew it. For example, just allowing them to spontaneously cast off the entire school of magic, count as specialised in it, and get all of their alternate specialism benefits (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm) without paying the price would somewhat make up for their loss. It's probably easier than looking for a RAW method that doesn't exist. Or you could literally make them just sorcerers who only take spells of that school (or focussed specialist wizards who only have spells of that school in their book, cantrips notwithstanding)

The Restricted Sorcery flaw from Dragon #327 gives you any two non-Divination schools as banned schools, but requires "Ability to cast spells without preparation", so you need either a level in a spontaneous class or something to give you the ability to spontaneously cast with your wizard slots.

Just rework that last part for this flaw so that it doesn't require that.

From there, Use Red Wizard to get rid of Abjuration and Incantatrix to get rid of divination, and the flaw and Focused Specialist to ban everything else.

You've got Red Wizard Incantarix's, you'll still be dangerous.

Incantatrices is correct.

Though if you want to talk correct, a male incantatrix should really be an incantator...

Just rework that last part for this flaw so that it doesn't require that.
I had a DM once who let me take that flaw three times on a sorcerer to ban everything other than Conjuration and Divination.
