Inspired by the traveling advice thread, I decided to start this thread, where you can show off your hometown and share traveling advice.

I'll start with Hamburg, Pearl of the North.

http://www.hh.schule.de/metalltechnik-didaktik/fotogalerien/knips/hafen/picture-0037.jpg
This is a part of the port by night, featuring the Queen Mary 2 on one of her visits.

http://www.dialo.de/images/cityGuides/hamburg/HamburgerHafenLuftbild.large.jpg
This is an aerial picture of the port, with some of the nicer (mean: richer) neighbourhoods in the foreground)

http://daten.korelstar.de/gallery/bilder/digi_bluealster.jpg
This is the the Binnenalster, an artificial lake in the centre of the inner city, complete with the Jungfernstieg, a main boulevard, in the background. You can also see the tower of the townhall and the blue goals, an art installation during the Football World Championships last year.

http://www.fotosdeluxe.de/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2497&g2_serialNumber=2
This is the townhall by night and fully illuminated. It's home the the Lord Mayor and the Senate, the governing body of the city state of Hamburg.

Universität Hamburg (http://www.pro-linux.de/berichte/lk2005/jpgs/016.jpg)
This is the entrance to the old main building and center of the campus of Hamburg University.

A "Fleet" (http://www.tour-report.com/Deutschland/Hamburg/images/Hamburg-Innenstadt-29.jpg)
One of the many "Fleet" (network of small canals, which run through the city) and the reason why we're called Northern Venice. You can also see the old "Speicherstadt", warehouses they used mainly for coffee and spicestorage before they started to use containers. Part of the traditional port.

Hafencity (http://www.architektur-zeichnung.de/images/03_hafencity_1.jpg)
This is a conceptual drawing of the Hafencity, a new quartier with apartments and office builidings, which they are right now building.

Elbphilarmonie (http://www.baulinks.com/webplugin/2005/i/1680-hafencity1.jpg)
This is also under construction, the new concert hall for philharmonics. A huge building on top of a traditional warehouse.

Eppendorf (http://img.meinestadt.de/images/image.php/id=45805/type=S)
This is Eppendorf, a middle class neighbourhood, again with a "Fleet". My grand-mother happens to live there, but today it's mostly young professionals (hipsters).

Außenalster (http://www.hamburgrundflug.de/Q/alster2g.jpg)
This is an aerial picture of the Außenalster, a large lake right in the middle of Hamburg.

Thalia Theater (http://www1.uni-hamburg.de/rz3a035//thalia.jpg)
This is the Thalia Theather, my favourite theatre in Hamburg. One of the best theatres in Germany, our other top theatre being the Schauspielhaus. (http://www.lucagalli.net/photoalbum/hamburg/slides/deutsches-schauspielhaus.jpg)

I hope you've got an impression of what Hamburg looks like. The most beautiful city in Germany, but that's just my opinion :smallwink:

Uh... I have several.
In chronological order:
Bordertown
This is the most interesting thing there, and the only thing I remember. I was born there, only stayed for 3 days (mum was basically the only doctor in our town, and she could hardly midwifer herself).
http://www.ausemade.com.au/sa/destination/b/images/bordertown/0310140173sm.jpg
Travelling tips: Stop for lunch at the kangaroos, then move on right out of there.

Kaniva
This is approximately its entirety. The town logo is a windmill. It's set in the wheatbelt between the Big Desert and the Little Desert, and I've talked to people who have driven the highway from Nhill to Bordertown - which runs straight through it, as can be seen in the picture - and never even noticed it. Pop ~ 900
http://www.travelmate.com.au/Images/Towns/2410TN.jpg
Travelling tips: It has a caravan park, but you probably won't notice it. Beware of the itchy-bomb trees at the swimming pool.

Armidale
Biggest town I've ever lived in (5 digits!). Gorgeous churches, very pretty especially for about a week in autumn, lots of cafes, and a new shopping centre being built for some reason (the other one was only just expanded :smallconfused:). University town. Heaps of schools. Cold in winter.
http://www.abc.net.au/newengland/stories/m466409.jpg
Travelling tips: The restraunts and cafes are great. Come visit me in the town library on Saturdays. Oh, and we have 3 spare beds (4 if you include Erin's spare).

Valley Heights/Springwood
This was approximately the view from my house. Lower slopes of the Blue Mountains, surrounded by bush. Very pretty, but very small.
http://users.tpg.com.au/adslbcwm/Places/Scenic/Springbrook%20-%20%20Escarpment%20from%20Numinbah%20Valley%20Bord er%20Crossing%20Full.jpg
There's probably better towns just as pretty in the viscinity.

Tallangatta
The entirety of the town is in this shot. You can even see my school, down in the left-hand corner. Very small, quite pretty. Has a caravan park and, on the rare occasion there's water in it, you can go skiing on the weir (when there's no water, the mud's grand). Pop ~1000
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6e/Tallangatta_from_lookout.jpg
Travelling tips: you might like to try to check when there's water. Good walk on the far side of the lookout, and when I left there was a bed-and-breakfast near it that made great cakes.

Armidale again
Just thought I'd throw in this shot - the livestock market after a massive hail storm.

Some of us don't live in a 'hometown' y'know :smallwink:

I'm up in the boonies, on the very borders of my town of Dahlonega. Its a pretty cool place though. Home of the very first American gold rush and one of the big reasons the Cherokee were pushed out onto the Trail of Tears (I'm related to those who hid out however and didn't go).

Most of the buildings here are at least a hundred years old.

However... can't seem to find a pic of the bloody place.

Heres the college though and surrounding area:

true
and from what you said earlier they were even made by your forefathers...

you may need to add a few "fore"s in though

we really don't need to go into one-up manship here. i just like pointing out to people (americans mostly) that 200 years isn't even a grain of cosmic sand in the hourglass of the whole planet.

Right now, I live in Brompton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brompton%2C_Medway), an awful place. Generally, literacy goes down as you move north in England, but Medway is a long way south and boasts some of the lowest literacy rates in the country.

You may think the rest of the country has trouble with chavs, but only because you have never been down Chatham high-street. They lope around in packs, marked by their 12" gold-plated clown necklaces, track-suits and BMX bikes that they either had since they were 7 or else they recently stole from a 7 year-old.

Hundreds of benefit-scroungers, teenage mothers, juvenile delinquents and drunks.

Hey, we also have the...uh...well there's the...no, that's not interesting at all...um, certainly there has to be something interesting in Atlanta...

We have sprawl, lots and lots of suburban sprawl, and I guess that's about it with the exception of a couple of marginally architecturally interesting buildings. Oh, and the world's largest aquarium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Aquarium).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Georgia_Aquarium_Jan_2006.jpg

But yeah, not much of interest in Atlanta, unfortunately. Sometimes I regret having moved back here after college, but my friends and my family are here, and that was reason enough. That and I wouldn't have managed to support myself financially had I decided to move back to Oxford. Now that's an interesting town.

I don't really have a 'hometown' (comes with being a military brat), but I would consider Phoenix, AZ my home because most of my family is there. It looks pretty much like this:

http://www.destination360.com/north-america/us/arizona/images/s/arizona-downtown-phoenix.jpg

It also contains many of those pointy saguaro that everyone else seems so excited to see. Has some very pretty sunsets. Also has some good bars if you know where to look.

Travel: Go to Jerome or Sedona. They're both beautiful places.

Right now I'm stuck in Wyoming, which is very flat and has lots of wind. It's an odd kind of pretty. There's something called 'frontier days' which is going on now, which I have concluded is everyone dresses up like cowboys, watches cowboy goings-on, then gets drunk.

Most people hate it, but compared the St. Hedwig, Texas (where I lived for about 3 years) it's a metropolis of excitement.

And Sean you live in either London or Liverpool.

It's Liverpool, assuming the second picture was of his hometown. Hey, Sean? Next time you want to hide where you live, don't show a picture whose url contains the name of the city in it. :smallwink:

:smallsigh: You folk and your fancy hometowns. What about those of us who don't rightfully have one? Unless you mean the town I was born in, which was Key West. Other than that... nope, no real hometown to speak of. Stupid parents dragging me all across the eastern US..

Out of curiosity, about when did you leave Key West?

Dude, you were born in Key West? Awesome. Not really, often I find myself wishing I lived here in the 50s or 60s, back when you could take a weekend trip to Havana and have the time of your life for only $20. I think the 70s and 80s were pretty cool here too, I'm not sure. What I do know is that nothing terribly signifacant has happened since at least the early 90s.

Murmansk, Russia. Traveling advice? Don't go there in winter. That's about it.

Not bad, eh? My house isn't exactly there, though. Kind of more suburban.

Yah...My hometown is more a home area. I lived in the same part of the county for the first...oh...19.5 years of my life until I moved to school. I still go home a lot. I've only ever lived in 3 houses, all within 40 minutes of each other, and one I've lived in since I was 5. But if I showed you, I'd have to kill you. :smallwink:
8 houses in 4 towns. 12 if you include my grandparents' house where we stayed for some time after leaving Victoria, the one my mum had before she bought one when I didn't live with her, college and the Wright Village, and not including the various places my dad lived after I stopped living with him and where my parents are now.

Resident: Geordie-opolis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_upon_Tyne) :smallcool:
(Our bridge first! The filthy Aussie convict devils of Sydney just nicked the design!)
I likes the old stuff, and the heavy industry, and the cheap booze, and the laid-back attitude, and the gorgeous scenery...
Only place I can imagine ever maybe wanting to move away to would be York. Sorry, whole-of-the-rest-of-the-world, but everywhere outside ancient Northumbria is just fail by comparison.

I've got three different places that I usually refer to as "home".

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kureshtin/images/Torsas.jpg
Torsås, Sweden. (picture of the main street through the village center)
A small village of about 7,500 inhabitants. This is where I grew up.

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kureshtin/images/kalmar.jpg
Kalmar, Sweden. (picture is of the castle in the foreground and the city center and the bridge to Öland towards the back)
Just about 30 miles north of Torsås, is the place I tell people who know very little of the Swedish geography where I'm from when they ask as it's easier to find on a map. :)

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kureshtin/images/largs.jpg
Largs, Scotland (http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/largs/largs/index.html)
This is where I stay right now. A smallish town on the west coast of Scotland that has the sort of sleepy small town feel to it that I'm used to from where I grew up in Sweden.

Tiny town of Teignmouth. What's there in that picture is in fact more or less the entirety of the town. Don't live there any more though, I now reside in the lovely halls of residence in Leeds.

Awww man this thread sorta depresses me. Some of you guys lives in such awesome beautiful places with great architecture and history, while I live in a good ol' slice of American suburbia. Well at least I have the Big Chicken, that beats moving from town to town.

Well at least I have the Big Chicken, that beats moving from town to town.

Hmmm.. The Big Chicken? Is that the one with a statue of a chicken in the middle of a town square? The one that apparently melted once because it was too hot?
The place where it's against the law to use a fork when eating chicken?
