You are currently at the mouth of the cave's entrance, near the edge of Oakbrook. You have your gear with you-that which will stick with you no matter what happens.

The door is closed. Will you open it?

Anja steps forward and raps the end of her quarterstaff against the door a couple of times. "A door, ha!" she laughs slipping the staff through a loop on her pack. "Seems... strange. You'd think rocks would be more appropriate. Like lots of rocks. All piled on top of each other. Blocking the entrance," she looks around at their little group expectantly before rolling her eyes and conjuring a globe of fire that seemed to hover in her hand.

"This village has bigger problems if they think building a door, instead of burying it, was going to fix their den of evil problem."

"Feels like we're wasting time standing around here jawin' rather than fightin'. Place isn't getting any younger."

Gil grouses, his tone making it clear that *he* was the one not getting any younger.
Tucking his morningstar into his belt, the old guardsman checks the straps on his shield one final time, and then steps up to the door.

Apparently unafraid of any potential traps or "curses of the Old Ones", he looks around for a handle or similar grip he could use to pull the door open, and upon finding one, grasps hold of it.

"Hope y'all are ready. Somebody git a torch lit in case it's dark inside."

And then without further warning Gil pulls the door open, holding his shield up in front of him in the doorway while reaching for his morningstar.

Gil grunts at the news of spiders ahead, stuffing the morningstar back into his belt.
He digs a torch out of his backpack and holds it above Anja's hand until it ignites, and then brandishes the lit torch in front of him and over his head - he doesn't need no spider jumping down on top of his head.

"Jus' how giant we talkin' here?"

Gil asks, genuinely curious as he's never seen an actual giant spider, so he isn't sure whether "giant" meant "bigger than normal" or literally "giant-sized".
Regardless, it doesn't look like there's any other way to go than further inside the cave, and so Gil gamely advances slowly into the darkness once the others have formed up behind him like Anja.

That hardly seemed right for a bunch of dumb spiders - why'd they go after her instead of Gil who was closer?
Maybe cuz she was smaller? Or maybe . . . it was because she was the one holding the light!?

"Waz wrong, Anja? You look whiter than flour! One of them spyders didn't bite ya, did it?

It felt really awkward to hold something in his shield hand besides his shield, and it occured to him that he could drop the torch if he got into a serious fight.
Which would only make matters worse if he had to carry on that fight in the dark.

"If ya feel up to it, I think ya should carry a torch too. That way if one of us drops it we can still see straight."

If anyone else in the party agrees to carry a torch (especially Anja), Gil will pull a second torch out of his backpack, lighting it from his first and then passing it on.
Once that matter is settled, with two lit torches in the party or only one, Gil turns and presses onward, carefully using the torch to burn the remaining webs ahead of him.

When neither Gwyn or whatever had been making the noises present themselves Anja slows and lets Gil pass. She wasn't thinking rushing off like that, it could have been an ambush. "Ah!" she yells pointing toward the dimming torch ahead. Holding Gil's torch up high, her hand also still wreathed in flame, she prepares to light the way for Gil as he advances with the rest of them behind.

From the wet tearing sounds ahead, it seems doubtful that this would be a rescue.
But perhaps they would still be able to avenge.

Gil was not a complete stranger to death - occasionally there was a group of bandits or a dangerous wild animal that got too close to town, and even more occasionally someone died in the process of removing it. But this . . . whatever desecration these things ahead were doing - that was something else.
And it was something that had to be stopped, and removed from the face of the earth.

But even in his rage, Gil clung stubbornly to his training.
One problem at a time - he could try to come to terms with this insanity after the threat was gone.

"Keep advancing. Don't get closer than you need to. Stay in formation!"

Gil barks as he advances slowly, keeping pace with the movement of the torchlight from Anja's hand.
When these foul creatures responsible come into sight, Gil hangs back, preferring to stand his ground out of reach if possible, and use the hallway's more narrow dimensions to funnel them in, rather than running out to meet them and get surrounded.

Gil is the first to see them-four humanoid beings, standing about 5' tall, with tendrils coming from their backs. Long, thin tendrils, razor sharp, digging into Gwyn's corpse. They seem preoccupied doing... Something, with her body. You can see criss-crosses of razor thin bloody lines on her skin, as well as several larger puncture wounds.

"What were those? They were speaking? Why did they do this?" she wonders aloud as she steels herself to approach the dead body. She'd seen dead animals before, even a goblin or two, but she'd never had to deal with the body of someone she knew. "Do we leave it here? Or should we go back? Bury it? Burn it? Even as the creature collapses into what passes for a bloody heap among its kind, Gil delivers another blow to it. And another.
The irony of the act, obliterating the thing's corpse in almost a similar manner as it did to Gwyn's, it lost in the bloody-minded haze around him.
A haze that finally begins to lift as he staggers away from what little remains now of the creature, breathing heavily.

"We bury the lass. Outside, somewhere peaceful, away from all . . . this."

Gil pants, flicking what he can of the creatures' blood off of his morningstar before tucking it into his belt - he'd have to give it a thorough cleaning tonight.
He puts his shield away as well, leaving his hands free as he goes back over to Gwyn's body.
He doesn't want to look at her body again, but forces himself - just long enough to determine whether she'll fall to pieces when he tries to pick her - it, up to carry out of here.

Then he hears the sound of approaching footsteps on the stairs.

"If anymore of you freaks are coming, we killed your friends! Step into our torchlight and you'll suffer the same!"

He shouts up the stairs at whatever is coming, cursing to himself as he started unslung his shield from his back and started reattaching it to his arm.

A traveling taxidermist specializing in monsters had passed through the village one year, bringing with him samples of his work, which could be viewed for a few coppers.
Unfortunately, his display of the dreaded Two-headed DOOMRat turned out to be nothing more than a normal dire rat with a second head sewed onto it, so perhaps he wasn't so skilled of a taxidermist, nor one that handled real monsters after all.

In any event, Gil was not concerned about a bunch of rats, and so advanced down the hallway without fear, torch held high.

Anja automatically reaches out to grab Gil's pack and pull him back a few steps. "Where?" she asks spinning to Gwyn.

"How big is it? Can you see?"

Stepping to the side so Gywn could approach Anja begins looking around at the walls and ceilings, searching in a near panic for whatever might have been ready to be sprung on them.

Looking around for swinging blades, rolling boulders and the like.

With the pressure plate pointed out, it's not too difficult to see that it's about 3' long, and stretches the width of the hall. It'll be simple to jump over, or even just take a large step.

No cuts for blades, no holes for boulders. Just innumerable small holes, with the incessant chittering and squeaking of the rats behind them.

Anja (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1136417)
Anja's the last to cross, still looking around vainly in search of whatever the plate might have set off. She'd been ready to dismiss the holes in the wall as nothing more than the workings of the rats she heard earlier, but now she wasn't so certain and she eyed them nervously before leaping over the trap and hurrying after the other to take her spot behind Gil again.

"Maybe the rats were charmed? Trapped by magic into guarding that part of the tunnel? If we come back tomorrow i'll try asking them i think," she mutters aloud to herself distractedly as she walks. Ever since Gwyn noticed the trap she'd been holding her torch as high as she could and was constantly scanning the ceiling for one of the swinging blades she was near certain was just around the next corner. Or maybe the next one. But they were definitely there, waiting patiently, she was sure of it and so she kept her eyes peeled as they marched into the darkness, ready to cry warning even while diving out of way.

Anja is paranoid now, she'll be keeping a watch on the upper portion of the corridor/tunnel. Just passive perception i guess since it's like a constant thing.

Anja (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1136417)

A little before Celticbear's post...
"At last!" Anja exclaims when sound comes flooding back and she can hear her own panting. The warlock didn't weigh that much, but running with any sort of weight like that was tiring business! Now to fixing him, she thinks to herself flipping open the component pouch at her waist and quickly selecting a sprig of mistletoe. Chanting (yes noise!) she infuses the sprig with magic causing 10 little berries to appear, grow and plop free from the sprig in only a few seconds. Tucking the sprig back in her pouch she prys open Doyal's mouth and shoves them into his mouth, crushing them against his teeth and gums with a dirty finger.

Once he's awake...
"Gil's still in there! We can't just leave him," she turns to the others pleadingly.

Gil has one torch, Anja has the other.

Anja will cast Goodberry and force Doyal to swallow the berries.

I'm not sure how far away from the battle we are, or how many rounds have gone by. But if we're just acting in a somewhat quasi initiative at the moment Anja would use her last spell slot to conjure up another 10 berries which she'd keep stored in her component pouch.

Disengaging, and then hiding. It can do so due to an ability.

"Is it dead?" Anja asks from behind Doyal having been pulled along by the rope connecting them together as he rushed back towards the room. She enchants her staff and grips it tightly in her hand just in case as she peers around looking for the flickering light of Gil's torch and any sign of the spirit should it still be lurking about.

"Are you alright Gil?" she calls into the room not knowing if the magical silence merely stopped sound being made or also prevented it from entering.

Anja will cast Shillelagh on her quarterstaff just in case, so she isn't totally useless should the thing come back.
And she'll look around for it and try make sure Gil was alright.

Gil honestly expected to die at this point - he was alone against some sort of nightmarish shadow creature that had nearly torn Doyal in half with one blow.
And aside from being the distraction keeping the thing busy, he was in the troublesome conundrum that he couldn't join his friends in running away because there was nothing to stop the thing from leaping on his back if he broke off the fight.
Besides which, being in the torchlight seemed to make the thing uncomfortable - was it not aware that being in the torchlight was a bad idea for it?
Either way, it was just another reason to keep the thing engaged - what was that odd saying Gil once heard about adventurers getting in over their heads but having to see it all the way through? Tiger by the tail? Or shadow monster in the torchlight, as the case may be.

"Come on you ugly git, let's go! You wanna eat me, I'm right here! Come on, DO IT!"

Gil ranted in his mind, unable to hear his own ragged breath but he could still feel his old heart pounding away in his chest as he circled the monster, looking for another opening.

And then just like that, his allies - friends? - came back for him! That was a bold and foolish move, but to Gil's surprise the creature fled into the darkness out of torchlight, and then screamed in his mind, apparently fleeing the battle entirely thanks to Doyal.

Legs shaking, he moves to join back with the group, a dead man walking out of his tomb.
When he gets back to the group and can speak again, he smiles at the group and gives a loud whoop as he flops down on the floor.

"YEEEAAAH! Nice going Doyal! You got that nasty good! . . . We should probably get out of here before it decides to come back. I just . . . I just need a minute."

Doyal, having only served among paladins who have had passing thoughts of killing what they believed to be just another heretic, blinks at the sudden bode of confidence. This coupled with a depleted mental health, and the lack of spell slots, fills Doyal with a strange tired assurance that everything would be okay. Then a realization that the universe, nay the multiverse, is infinite and that he was but a passing speck fills Doyal with his normal dreary outlook on life, but for one moment he was content.

Still being tied to Gywn and Doyal, Anja takes the time to undo the rope connecting them and hands their segment back to Gil. "Yeah, les go back there. Ready to go now."

Gil grunts as he takes the 3/4ths length of rope back, and hefts his torch, shield, and morningstar again.
He was still breathing heavily, although not quite as severely as a few moments ago.
Still, a longer rest in safety would be welcome - this whole "dungeoneering" thing was new to him, and he was not nearly as young as he used to be.

Holding her quarterstaff before her as she slowly pulls open the door, Anja sighs with relief to find the sanctuary exactly as they left it. The adrenaline that had been pumping through her veins ever since they entered that corridor of silence vanishes suddenly leaving her feeling drained. Resting against a wall she lets herself slide down the stone into a sitting position, legs splayed out in front of her. She closes her eyes for a few seconds before sighing once more, remembering the healers kit she'd pulled apart saving Doyal and consequently shoved back into her pack in a jumble.

"Let's not go that way again," she suggests as she sorts the pieces of the kit back into their proper place.

Gil looks for a place within to temporarily store his torch, like a torch holder built into the wall, but if he fails to find one, he simply puts his torch out/leaves it to burn out some place where it won't catch anything on fire or disturb the sanctuary's peacefulness. Once that is accomplished, he stows his morningstar and shield, setting them next to his chosen spot within the room, shrugs off his pack, and lies down on the floor, using the pack as a pillow.

"Ugh, is this what it's like everyday as an adventurer? Running around in the dark and nearly getting killed by that . . . what that thing was?"

Gil has no HP damage or spent abilities, so he has nothing to recharge during his short rest.

As for mental health, I thought it recovered 1 point/level/extended rest?
Meaning that most likely, we need to go back to town and rest for a nearly two weeks before Anja & Doyal are all better.
One of the reasons why I've been wanting to press on so we get some more XP, at least enough to hit level 2.

Finally, Gil pushes himself back up to his feet, collecting his pack and shouldering it once more. He affixes his shield back onto his arm, takes up (or relights) the torch he had been using, and draws his moringstar, cracking his neck as he does so.

"We ready to git goin' again? We going through this door here, or checking out what's down that sickly sweet corridor?"

"I suppose we can't stay here forever," Anja sighs, rolling over and climbing to her feet. "Maybe the door this time?" She slowly picks up her pack and slips back into the straps, she looks rather reluctant to leave the safety of the shrine but she's far more reluctant to be left here alone. "Pancakes?" she raises an eyebrow at Doyal before shaking her head.

"Here, take these," she says flicking open her component pouch and removing a small handful of oddly coloured berries. "Don't rely on me for any magic," she tells them all dropping two berries into each of their hands. "These are good for you, can heal small wounds - sometimes big wounds if you eat a lot of them. Just don't squash them in your pocket!"

Wreathing her hand in flames once again, she relights both her and Gil's torches and waits for everyone else to get ready.

Anja will just follow after Gil.

We're almost there EXP-wise. That ghost thing might have done it had we killed it/got past it.
As for HP, everyone should be at full already. The only one that took any damage was Doyal, but he got a handful of goodberries down his throat (9), to take him back to full.

Anja pauses on the threshold as the thought of stepping back into the dark tunnels with monsters lurking causes her to break out into a cold sweat. "Nothing to worry about Anja, the ghosts are the other way," she reminds herself. Anything with the ability to slip through solid stone and rip the life from someone with a touch was right up there at the top of her list of things to avoid. Right next to those things that had killed the first Gwyn, she reminds herself, watching as Gwyn steps past her.

Steeling herself, she raises her torch high and steps through after her into the tunnel.
