View Full Version : Using a net in water: how to?

We are on the darklake traversing the underdark.

We keep encountering both foes and fish.

If we wanted to use the nets to capture food, how would we roll for that?

To capture and entangle foes in the water, does anything change?

Thanks in advance,

Dove

Fishing would most likely come under a Wisdom (Survival) check. The rules mention hunting game for that skill, and fishing seems like a variant of that.

Trying to capture a foes, I don't recall there being any specific rules for that. I don't recall a net weapon, or anything relevant under skills or tools. So I think it would be DM discretion, and I imagine it would be an attack using the net. Presumably a hit would mean the foe is grappled in the water, though it might be able to break free with a successful a Strength or Dexterity check. But my initial thought is that this would be an improvised interction doing whatever the DM deemed most suitable.

In the PHB the net is a special weapon. Here's the info for rolls and stuff

Net. A Large or smaller creature hit by a net is
restrained until it is freed. A net has no effect on
creatures that are form less, or creatures that are Huge
or larger. A creature can use its action to make a DC 10
Strength check, freeing itself or another creature within
its reach on a success. Dealing 5 slashing damage to the
net (AC 10) also frees the creature without harming it,
ending the effect and destroying the net.
W hen you use an action, bonus action, or reaction
to attack with a net, you can make only one attack
regardless of the number of attacks you can
normally make.

Agreed on survival for fishing, possibly with advantage if you have good fishing gear like spears and nets.

That said I hesitate to wonder what horrors might reside in that lake.
