when i dm irl i often add music to a situation as i love the use of music as a medium in storytelling

i have been trying to think of good ways to incorporate this into a pbp game and can use some different minds to give input and criticism

thanks in advanced

When I do this, I couple the music with a picture. Like this:

Faction: The Rhajit

[Right click and open in new tab for music.] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm3e9hoo3ZM)

[Several paragraphs of stats and flavour text to be read while music plays in other tab.]

Just choose a song or a few songs that you feel fit the general theme of the scene and post it as a suggestion for players to listen to so they get in the mood. Maybe as a youtube link, there are plenty good music pieces up there.

Of course, you can't stop your players from accompanying the tense escape scene with yackety sax, instead...

There are adblockers, and also, what's the problem? It is play by post, the players can wait for 15 seconds to play their music while they read and write.

not everyone uses adblockers and the ads can ruin atmosphere

Sometimes I use Roll20 within a PbP games, and you can play songs through that, though the library isn't huge. A bit of Björk, a bit of Mogwai... you can probably create some atmosphere.

I've never used the feature myself though; I feel like forcing my song choices on other people is a bit rude. Remember MySpace?

You can't control "atmosphere" in a PbP campaign.

One player may be reading your latest update in bed. Another may be on a crowded train, another sunbathing on a beach, another surreptitiously checking his phone while at work, another may be conducting a conversation with a husband and two toddlers while trying to read your latest update.

Atmosphere, schmatmosphere. Learn to accept the things you cannot control.

I find video game soundtracks can be helpful, such as for the little-known '96 first-person shooter/RPG-hybrid, Strife: Quest for the Sigil (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPrU7LSqiX0).

the first part is a fair point

the second part is hypocritical
