Animal Companion+Create Frenzy Dog=???

How does the Create Frenzy Dog spell and the template that it grants (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/fx20011025a) interact with animal companions? Does the Frenzy Dog template only affect the "base" HD of the animal, or do you have to level up enough for the bonus animal companion HD to "update"?

Your animal companion would no longer be a valid companion and would lose all the animal companion benefits as it is now a magical beast rather than an animal.
