My group is starting HotDQ tomorrow. I've never run a module before and only have a little bit of experience DMing, so I'm a little intimidated.
I'm torn between keeping it more-or-less straight to the book (adjudicating and modifying as necessary) and using it as a springboard into a storyline of my own that would progress similarly, bit with a focus on undead and the Shadowfell instead of dragons.
For those who have run and/or played it, what advice do you have on running it? Specific changes you made, encounters you altered. I've heard that the beginning is especially brutal, especially for level one characters (which my group is stating as).
I'd be changing course in the campaign at around chapter 7 of HotDQ.
