Is there a way to give a fighter an animal companion? Preferably something exotic? IS there a feat or something that would grant it? I would rather not multi-class if it's avoidable.

The Wild Cohort (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) feat does exactly what you want it to.

Other than that, not much.

You could also take Leadership and get an animal-like cohort.

It's a good option if you want some more exotic creatures.

There's also Dragon Cohort [Draconomicon] for...pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

Since you didn't specify the system, in addition to the ways referred to by others, Pathfinder has Animal Ally (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/animal-ally/), which allows you to select from badger, bird, camel, cat (small), dire rat, dog, horse, pony, snake (viper), or wolf. None particularly exotic, though you could probably make it sound that way even if you use the regular statistics. Add Boon Companion (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/boon-companion/) and you'll have an animal companion equal to your level.

VMC Druid gets you one too.

You can also just be a Cavalier, which is essentially Fighter + animal companion anyway.

Natural Bond combos well with Wild Cohort, by the way.

Animal Ally is the feat tax version of Wild Cohort for Pathfinder
