Once upon a time, there was a group of high school kids who decided it would be fun to start a roleplaying game. They played a session of the Star Wars d20 game and had a good time, and decided to carry on, but they only had one set of dice between them and things were slowing to a crawl because of that, so they purchased a huge sack of dice from the internet and shared them out at random so everyone had one of each type, though the colours were mismatched. Then they rolled, and fun was had by all.

This touching story is the origin of my current and only set of dice, and it must be said that for such a hotchpotch group they serve me well for years. However, I have moved on to pastures new since then, and my random selection of dice is beginning to look a little shabby compared to the sets of some of the more serious gamers I currently play with. In addition, a few weeks ago my beautiful red marbled d20 had something of a seizure and, instead of it's usual run of 14-18s, started rolling only 1s, 2s and 20s at critical moments.

Thus I have decided that it is time for me to get some new dice, not to replace, but to bolster my current set and allow them some R&R during the roleplaying-heavy winter I have ahead of me. This is especially important considering that come January, I will be DMing a long campaign for the first time, while the dice I currently have are very much player's dice.

So, I come to you for help. I am looking to buy two sets maximum from these four three, but can't make up my mind. Assist me, please! Do I buy clear, teal (http://www.wickeddice.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=93_119&products_id=2358&osCsid=l2qa6jpjoabrf84qnip2uh4192), red (http://www.wickeddice.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=93_119&products_id=2392&osCsid=l2qa6jpjoabrf84qnip2uh4192) or turquoise (http://www.wickeddice.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2274&osCsid=l2qa6jpjoabrf84qnip2uh4192)?

Ahh, buying dice... If I had spare money I'd buy some really cool ones. Like metal, or bone.

Anyway, my vote goes to the turquoise ones. Those look really pretty. Now I want them. >_>

Turquoise.

With the colors you've shown, I say that the turquoise is your best bet.

However, as an experienced player and DM of many years, I must advise that dice such as those that you show to have a fancy for, can quickly grow tiresome at trying to decipher quickly. I have always found that a good dark and solid base color with numbers in a bright, easy to see color (as such (http://dicepool.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27_58&products_id=750)), make for easy reading of dice no matter how far away they land on the table.

I also strongly advise against purchasing clear dice, of any sort, ever. For the simple annoyance that if the die happens to land on a surface that matches or blends with the color of your numbers, it is inevitable that the only way to read the blasted thing is to pick it up, or stand right on top of the thing.

Personally, I'm seriously considering buying these (http://dicepool.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1343), just for the laugh factor!

Well, I think I've just found the perfect Christmas present for a certain Simpsons-loving gamer.

Your point about how readable dice are is well made, but unfortunately I am a magpie, and thus must hoard the shiny things. I will buy pretty dice now, and then when I'm feeling more practical, I'll buy sensible dice.

None of the above OP!
Go for the substantially more awesome Tyrian Purple (http://www.wickeddice.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2259). Although they have nothing to do with the real Tyrian purple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_purple) (which was supposed to have rather more red to it) they really cool. :smallcool:

And remember, there's no such thing as too many dice.

That is a good and, now I come to think about it, shockingly obvious idea.

The red scarab (IMHO). I have the green scarab and one of my friends has the red. They are beautiful dice. But, I think it should be about your personal preference. Do you like bold, dramatic colors or the softer pastels?

EDIT: If you are going to be the DM, go bold or go home!

I am leaning towards the red scarab dice to be my DM dice. Something about them says 'I want to make things interesting for your PCs'. Maybe it's because they're kind of blood-coloured.

As for the others, I do like the turquoise ones, but the teal have a certain elegant subtlety that I can't rule out. I also wonder if the turquoise ones are the sort that don't look so good in real life. Maybe I'll ask my current dice to decide between them. The clear ones are a no, though, I think.

Wow, those shown are beautiful...I'd love to have a set of dice like those. But in any case, I would also make sure there's good contrast and readability. Usability before looks, that's my motto.

well if you buy two sets, dont buy teal and turquoise.
i'd get teal and red.

my advice, if you're not willing to spend heavily on dice, is to get one, really good, nice set that rocks, even if its like 20$. they will serve you forever.

- lol that reminds me of a game of snakes and ladders my friends and i were playing with my d100. my friend was at 87 and he rolled a 75. he bounced back 62 squares.

I'd get the red myself, with the turquoise as a close second (though it'll probably go with your existing dice better).

The maldives (http://www.wickeddice.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2274&osCsid=ko0qi1nipojr8k2n1bnckgsu60)*, by far.

Don't dismiss easy to read as an argument too quickly!

I have a beautiful set of black dice with red numbers (plus runes around them) that's absolutely impossible to read when it's getting dark and people insist on low illumination (especially candles) for the sake of atmosphere.

(but they are nice to look at in broad daylight ) http://www.de.q-workshop.com/photos/dice/large/krunczc.jpg

And for your desicion, I'd pick the turquoise set!

Forget all that go for water elemental. I think that is what they are called, though I cant find them. Any way, everyone in our game group has had great luck with them and one player has always had astounding luck. Including rolling 4, 20's in a row.

Well, I'm considering to buy this dice just to annoy my players:
The dice you just knew your dm had (http://cgi.ebay.com/Red-AD-D-Polyhedral-CHEATERS-DICE-for-RPG_W0QQitemZ200132269453QQihZ010QQcategoryZ2535QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Well, I have gone for the turquoise set for playing and the red for DMing, and I just hope the turquoise look as convincingly pretty in real life as they do in that picture or I'll wish I plumped for teal instead. I think there's enough contrast between the gold and blue that I should be able to read the numbers. There's a little less contrast in the red set, but since I'll be DMing with them I can roll in advance if it starts proving troublesome. Probably won't, since we play in a geology lab that is specifically lit for looking at rocks of different colours.:smallwink:

I looked at the Q-Workshop dice and they are indeed gorgeous, but then I showed the sight to my feller and he went and ordered the set I like most while I was still deciding. It'd look pretty twee if we turned up to the first session of next term with matching dice. :smallwink:

I'd go the red ones. Nephtis, those dice rock, where did you get them?

Nephtis' dice are Q-Workshop dice (http://q-workshop.com/main.php?lang=EN&sell_type=DETAL). These are the ones I would have got, had someone not ordered them first:

I would go for the ones labelled turquoise, as they are the clearest to read from the 3 in my opinion. Still, I would advise avoiding the gold numbered ones alltogether, as they can be tricky to read.

Ah, the dice debate. I personally love my dice, and when visiting the USA (where they are so much cheaper) I binge on dice purchases. Sci Fi city even sold bags which were A Pound Of Dice. I also have seperate sets that are all given a chance to roll.

However, I am not only incredibly unlucky with dice rolls, but others have become fearful of my 'plaguetouch' aka 'luc drain'. Seems if my allies use dice I have touched, or I use them, no-one can clear single figures on a D20.

Especially for 40K, I have several D6 blocks, one of which is even colour matched to my army! Still, most roll awful (eg, yesterday, 2 natural 6's for rending out of 41 dice). However, it seems the little set of plain white / black dotted standard dice are immune, and are often called into action for important rolls! Just to make this clear, they are not lucky as such. They roll about average. But that is sooooo much better than my other dice, it looks much better!

Hmmm...Pretty but unreadable dice. What will people think of next?

Also, the cheating dice...That's either funny or downright pathetic. I mean, there's a die with two 20s :S

I read in a Dragon magazine somewhere about a set of dice made out of a meteorite. They cost a bazillion dollars but you need those.

I am working on a dice set that is color coded, so I can easily pull out a d20, because they are the only blue ones, or a d6, because they are my only white ones.

Still have not completed a normal gaming set.

My standard dice set are about 300% the size of normal dice, and blue. They stand out, and no one is likely to take them by mistake after a game.

As far as pretty dice are concerned, http://www.q-workshop.com rocks.

The red on black kinda sucks, but they have far more eye-friendly designs,eg this one:

Hmmn..
"Wow those are neat dice, and they seam to be serving you lucky."
"They're bone dice, much thanks to my last DM - all my rolls with these I do in his name."
"He got 'em for yah? Must've cost a pretty penny."
"Nah, he's dead. These were made out of his bone."
"..."

I think I shall write on my ID to have my bone donated for gaming now...
