New comic! hmm, aren't muskrats vermin, not hornets? Or is this a joke i'm not getting? All creatures in D&D3.x land have a type. Insects are Vermin, natural mammals other than humans are Animals.

The joke is about game terminology, specifically about Roy using game terminology.

LOLLOLOLOLOLOL!!

This comic reminds me of the nightly routine my 4 year old son goes through. Great job Giant.

And, second page, first post!

I can't understand why Roy is letting this parent-child relationship with Elan continue.

NullAshton

I wonder why there wasn't a rules joke about the confusion spell somewhere, when Elan was driving Roy crazy.

My first thought - Why is Elan floating?

My second thought - Wait, Elan doesn't have a beard... AHHH!!!!!

I liked the monster under the bed, but my favorite was when Elan asked Roy to fluff his pillow

Nice comic, awesome set up for Nale's Sending to appear. I'm still not sure if the page in his hand is the scroll he used to cast the spell, or if he has an opening speech, list of demands and detailed directions to a meeting place/loot drop all written up and ready to go.

Oh, almost forgot - Nth page, w00t, etc . . .

Finally they got the Sending spell. Elan's requests were funny, hehe. Not really a laugh-out-loud comic, but amusing, and plot development.

Yay! Dramatic shift from comic genius to surprising tension.

*snort* Subterranean monster...

But what's up with the scroll Nale was holding? Accidentally showing the blueprints for his dastardly plan!?

Man... isn't Elan supposed to be good? If yes, he collected some alignment infraction points with those actions... the way he acts he seems to be chaotic neutral (or at least chaotic, that's for sure).

And the Linear Guild is back! Thanks Giant, I've been waiting so long!

Because the impending doom on Azure City itself isn't enough, the Giant HAD to throw in the Linear Guild! I'm hoping for some wacky hijinks to ensue. Yay!

If you actually count the days since Nale's "Soon. Very soon.", it's only been 3, 4 days since it. So really, Nale's right on time, even if he did seem to take a long time to appear.

As always, good stuff. I like comics that surprise you.

Felinoid
2006-08-03, 03:27 PM
Hunh. I had always thought of Nale and Elan's voices as clearly distinct. Elan would sound nicer, and Nale with an edge. But I guess they sound enough the same to fool Roy. Then again, it may just have been expectation that it would be Elan that allowed Roy to overlook any small difference. I just don't know. :-/

Nice comic, awesome set up for Nale's Sending to appear. I'm still not sure if the page in his hand is the scroll he used to cast the spell, or if he has an opening speech, list of demands and detailed directions to a meeting place/loot drop all written up and ready to go.

I was just wondering whether or not it could actually be the Sending scroll. Scrolls get used up on casting (in a poof of magical flame, according to all of my DMs), but maybe the scroll doesn't get destroyed until the spell is complete (message has been delivered)?

Hmm, his head is translucent, and the line of his sleeve matches up with the mountain on the right side, but then his beard is opaque. Strange indeed. This strip leaves me with far more questions than answers, I'm afraid. :(

Maybe It's a map so that Nale can make sure Roy knows where to come to rescue his sister and spring the trap? It would be easier than describing it, especially with Nale's low opinion of the Order of the Stick's intelligence.

My favourite was "will you sing a llulaby to me, roy?" awesome, totally awesome.

I really dont care if nale is transparent or not, it is obvious its an image. Im finally glad we are getting soem good guys/bad guys interaction, rather than just seeing the good guys trying to imagine what the bad guys are doing.

SPOILER:I still think that Roy doesnt have a sister, and that the Greenhilt that nale kidnapped just had the same last name. Imagine that! nale:"I kidnapped your sister!! hahaha!!!" roy:"im an only child..." hehe, lol

Re-reading the strip, I kind of want Roy to answer "Hello, Roy" with "Hello, Newman"...

Not necessarily. Remember that, among other things, scrolls can possess more than one spell. Destroying the physical remains of an expended scroll is a house rule, at least in 3rd Edition.

Therefore, Nale could certainly be holding the scroll he just used.

Elan knows what "subteranean" means?
Elan's a bard; they have a gift for languages, which includes vocabulary (helps them find rhymes). Just because Elan blurts out "Squid Thingy" doesn't mean he doesn't also know the words "Illithid" and "Psionic".

I'm curious as to what the state of Roy and Julia's relationship will be when we'll finally see them for the first time in the same panel (as adults, anyway). Obviously, Eugene Greenhilt (their father) was disappointed in Roy and saw Julia as the child most likely to follow in his footsteps *and* fulfill his oath, and if you've read Origins, during Roy's talk with Eugene, you might be able to sense bitterness about that from Roy.

Doh. An image. Probally should have guessed from the glowy and if you look close enough, you can see through Nale.

Plus, if you look in Nale's hand, you will see a piece of paper. Looks like he made a successful Use Magic Device roll. And I suspect that the sending scroll just might play into Nale's plan to tormnet Roy. But that is mere speculation on my part.

And to think that Roy will not be able to go madman on Nale. *sigh* ;D

2006-08-03, 07:50 PM
That's because he is using the "Sending" scroll (has anybody noticed?) that allows the spellcaster to telephatically speaks to a person he knows personally, as seen on strip 258. ::)

And so it continues!

Great comic, and it's about time the Linear Guild enacted their master plan. I can't wait to see their new roster!

Sadly, I think Thog's rocket skates might have played out their part (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=257).

Then again, the Linear Guild would have to give Thog something to make up for the lack of sprinkles...

Oh, and before I forget, \/\/007! 8th page!

Dun dun daahhhhh!

Alright, I know it's pointless, but I have a few ideas as to where the plot will go from here. I don't actually WANT to influence whether this happens or not, so I'll hide my thoughts.
<spoil>
So, Nale will have set his trap for Roy and Elan, somewhere near Cliffport. Roy will decide that they have to go there, part of his justification will be that Cliifport is one of the quicker ways to the Western Continent anyway. They will send a message to Azure city somehow, but end up in completely the wrong place.

Xykon goes nuts on Azure city, and Lord Shinjo decides to blow up his own gate, trusting Dorukan's wisdom about their possible mis-use, leaving it to our heroes to be the last line of defence between Xykon and the END OF THE WORLD.
</spoil>

The good thing about all that? Is that sometime in the next few episodes, we might get some more good information for THE MAP (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=comics;action=display;num=1144628756 ;start=0).

2006-08-03, 08:40 PM

SPOILER:I still think that Roy doesnt have a sister, and that the Greenhilt that nale kidnapped just had the same last name. Imagine that! nale:"I kidnapped your sister!! hahaha!!!" roy:"im an only child..." hehe, lol
As it's covered in (now all three) books, I won't bother with the spoiler color: no. Roy does have a younger sister Julia.

When was the last time Roy got a good night's sleep?
At a guess? I'd say the last night they spent in jail in Azure City. Certainly not the very last night they were there ... :-* . Before that? The night after hiring everyone, before they set out for the Redmountain Hills.

If I were Roy my grip on sanity would have gone bye-bye when Elan asked me to kiss Banjo. >:( Out with the big sword, Banjo cut into tiny pieces. ;D

While I wasn't specifically jonesin' for it, I was wondering how long it would be before the Linear Guild subplot re-emerged. Gotta love that Sending spell.

EDIT: Since Julia told Nale he'd be cute if he shaved off his goatee, I can imagine the sparks (and probably the fur if Haley has anything to say about it) will fly when she lays eyes on Elan.

And Roy will be working over-time to stop his lineage from ever mingling with Elan's.

Speaking of all the people who only just now got the fact that Elan is Nale ...

... am I the only one who just got the humor behind the fact that the bard's evil twin is a multiclass fighter/rogue/sorcerer specializing in enchantment spells? :D

Nice. Didn't see that coming. Not overly funny, but plot advancement is GOOD! subterrainan monster made me crack up tho.

Oooh.. nice cliffhanger. Can't wait to see the new LG members.

Not really much of a cliffhanger since we pretty much know exactly what's going to happen next. Nale tells Roy that they have his sister, they go rescue her, blah blah blah, OMG BANJO, blah blah blah blah blaaaaah, LOL NEITHER OF THEM ARE ANIMALS, blah, hornet=bug, blah, muskrat=vermin, blah blah and much more!

I.e, a less effective version of a bard? I doubt it. I always thought it was pretty subtle... took me a few reads to spot the deeper meaning...

Really, though, it's a horribly inefficient character concept - in particular, spellcasters are hugely weakened by multiclassing. If Nale has his levels balanced to avoid XP penalties, he's only going to be casting 1st level spells, maybe a few 2nd. And his attack bonus is no better and probably worse than that of Elan. His only advantage over his brother is a working brain.

After a rough week at work, I'm really sympathising with Roy at the moment. I've managed to not kill any co-workers yet, and I'm considering that a huge accomplishment.

Umm, the vermin comment was a rules joke, wasn't it? Hornets=>vermin, but muskrats don't exist, but if they did, they'd be non-mindless, and therefore animals... right?

Or am I missing something painfull obvious here?

When someone doesn't realise the cause of bizarre animal attacks on two, feuding people, that person really needs to get some sleep.

And get some earplugs. And encourage Haley to babysit Elan. And find someone trustworthy to stand guard. And find a sack of potatoes he can beat up everyday.

Many of you have written that we will son see the Linear Guild, especially its new members.

I don't think so. Nale uses Sending to talk with Roy, he and his team are far away. We won't see them for many strips still.

In D&D, Muskrats would be classified as animals, Hornets would be classified as vermin.

In real life, Muskrats are animals (mammals), and hornets are insects. Both creatures could be considered to be vermin.

So how pissed would Nale be if he went to all sorts of trouble to find evil opposites and one of the order ended up getting killed before they met?

Not saying I want that to happen (definitely not) but I can just imagine Nale's frustration and rage!

Even if this did happen (which is extremely unlikely, unless they met Xykon or something beforehand), I doubt Nale would be terribly mad. Sure, he took the time finding evil opposites. But it was only to kill them in the first place! Them dying wouldn't make a huge difference.

They will travel at the "speed of plot," otherwise known as however fast the Giant feels they should travel based on what will happen in between.

Very true. 'Speed of plot' worked quite well for George Lucas and J. Michael Straczinski :)

Not to worry; he only hit a max of five times in a row, nowhere near Elan's world record. :P

It's not a question of ease in destroying something, it's to work out his frustrations in non-disruptive manner. Similar to my becoming very good at Tetris one semester by playing it after a class with a particular teacher. ::)

Why did... no, nevermind, don't want to know. ;)

I just remembered, Nale asked Pompey to find as many Sending scrolls as he could. Why would he need more than one?

ever heard of the word blackmail? its not the same, but close. instead of giving all the information at once, nale is gonna give bits and pieces of the information, thus being more secretive and more son-of-a-bitchy.

In hindsight, this turned out to be a true statement, although probably not because of Nale's intentions. He did in fact give the relevant information in bits and pieces.

How many scrolls did Nale go through?

plus, as best as has been figured, he had about a 40% of failing his caster level check to use the scroll.

plus, as best as has been figured, he had about a 40% of failing his caster level check to use the scroll.

And where does this figure come from? yeah, it's a level 5 spell, but Rogues get Use Magic Device. It ain't hard for Rogue/Sorceror (with very likely a high Charisma) to easily make the DC to pretend to be a 9th level Wizard. That is only a 29. If he is tenth level with a 18 CHA, he could easily have an 18 UMD. With 5 ranks in Decipher Script and 5 ranks in Spellcraft that would be a 23 UMD. And likely he actually has a 20 CHA and is 12th level, making that a 26 UMD.

This would mean he has a 15% percent chance of failure. Otherwise I doubt he'd have spent the money, them scrolls ain't cheap.

let's see... he is a rougue/fighter/sorceror.

he is probably level 12 or so...

assuming he has leveled evenly (we have no reason to assume otherwise) that is 4 sorceror, 4 rogue, and 4 fighter.

he actally has all of the requirements for casting the spell down except for caster level (it is an arcane spell, on his list of class spells, he has at least 15 cha)

according to the DMG, all he has left to do is make a caster level check dc 10. (9 is the minimum caster level for the spell, and the formula is (dc=CL+1). looking at it, it looks like that is a 30% chance of failure. oh well, still would significanly increase the number of scrolls he has to go through, which was my origional point.

btw, trying to use UMD to qualify for CL would be even harder. assuming he took it cross-class with fighter and sorceror, and his very first level was in rogue, that is 11 ranks, and +4 cha mod (assuming 18 cha, which might be kinda high, since he has many other abilities which are also important). we have no evidence which would lead us to believe that he has taken any feats to boost this, or any other special modifiers, which leaves his total at 15, versus a dc 29, meaning he must get a 14 or better, a 65% chance of failure.

maybe he also has spellcraft at least 5 ranks (not unlikely), that would give him a +2 to his UMD with that scroll, giving him a 55% chance of failure. it stilll would be better to stick with a simple CL check.
