For Pathfinder, I screwed around with combining rules for the summoner (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/summoner/), their summoned creature (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/summoner/eidolons/), and the rules for construct construction (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/building-and-modifying-constructs/) to create a Dr. Frankenstein that could build bio or mechanical creatures.

I think you could look at those for inspiration. However, the rules there are way too fidgety for 5e so they should be simplified to fit in. They would also need to be toned down as you just want enough power to make a decent archetype, not a whole new class.

kind of a spitball first guess at what it might look like:

L1: you can create a device that can attack for you from a distance. As an action, you can animate it and cause it to move 20 feet towards and attack a creature of your choice if it's within 60 ft of you. Its attack bonus is prof. + int mod, damage is 1d6+int. Notably, the device is considered a weapon, not a creature. think battle bots.

L3: adds 1d6 damage to device's damage, scales at odd levels

L6: allows use of previous features with the bigger servant

L9: increase servant HP by an amount (not sure how much)

L14: upgrade to a CR 3 beast for servant, increase its AC and saves by your int mod

L17: upgrade to cr4 beast

you might want to go over to the homebrew forum though.
