So, Roy's been feeling (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0904.html) the (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1004.html) need (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1045.html) for a ranged weapon for a while now, and is trying to get one out of his sword. Which, by the way, he (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0796.html) keeps (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0932.html) dropping (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1067.html). Now, in #1045, Roy seems to be trying to generate some kind of magic projectile, along the lines of an Orb of X spell. The projectile obviously never appears, but we do see a "target" starting to form on the wall opposite him. Note, though, that in #1019 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1019.html), we see Roy instinctively throw his sword as he begins manifesting his green fire. Note also that the sword keeps the fire effect until it hits the ground (by which point Roy's target has teleported out of the room). Taken together, these things indicate to me that the next power we're going to see from the Greenhilt Sword is two-fold: first, Roy will be able to throw it as a ranged weapon (which incidentally will enable him to take advantage of his impressive strength score without buying an expensive bow); second, Roy will be able to (re)call it to his hand after throwing/dropping it, a la the Returning (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicWeapons.htm#returning) magic weapon property (but somewhat more powerful, so it can also cover him being disarmed).

Thoughts? I know there's been speculation on the recall ability; have I missed someone suggesting a throwable property?

I don't think the target's starting to form because of some kind of magic--I think it's fully formed because Roy drew it with chalk before he started practicing.

Hmm. I could see it. I figured the gaps meant it was still forming, but that could just as easily be Roy not finishing it. Still: no indication of Zelda-style sword beams in that comic, while in #1019 the sword keeps the aura after being thrown (and flies pretty accurately too).

You actually see a piece of chalk lying on a crate next to the target.

And yes, I agree, the sword getting the Returning quality makes sense, especially now that it's gods know where...

Wow, the attention to detail in this comic is magnificent

It has to be. The insistence upon minute detail in this forum is just as monumental.
