Odd thought

What would change in the game if Weapon Focus granted +1 bab while wielding a specific weapon type rather than +1 to hit, allowing you to take other feats and such a level earlier? What if Greater Weapon focus added another +1?

What would this change? Are the feats suddenly worth taking?

Thoughts?

They'd certainly be better and maybe more useful for early entry with respect to feats, but I don't think they'd jump up in priority or anything.

It's still a feat tax you use to get to better feats or classes.

it could potentially mean an additional attack 1 level sooner, i'd take it as a fighter feat.

Since number of attacks raises with BAB, it would allow any class that has a full attack bonus progression to get an extra attack at level 20, raising the max attacks to 5, instead of 4. Granted it would be at a -20, and only with that weapon. With Weap. Foc your BAB would be 21/16/11/6/1, and with Greater it would be 22/17/12/7/2. So, nothing game breaking. If you can hit something with a roll of -5 with your primary attack, it would still take a 15 with your final attack. Mostly it would be good for early entry into things that required a higher BAB, and only if your DM approved the temporary boost as counting for those purposes.

This; the fundamental role wouldn't change.

It's definitely more powerful than a simple +1 though, because you'd unlock your iteratives more quickly. Even if you capped it at character level, it would still be useful for 3/4 BAB classes. (It would even unlock your third iterative for 1/2 BAB classes, not that they need it.)

Aren't there feats and PrCs that use BAB as a prereq? Weapon Focus would become an ingredient in early entry tricks.

You can only ever get four attacks from BAB.

Is that not because BaB progression stops at level 20? If your BaB was 22 then it would make sense if you got 5.

No, it's because you only ever get four attacks (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatStatistics.htm#attackBonus) at level 16.

To be fair, it's not an unreasonable extrapolation. Epic goes out of its way to define its additional attack bonus as NOT BAB so that it avoids giving extra additional attacks.

It would be very useful in E6 where feats are cheap and BAB is rare.

I was about to say exactly this, so... +1.

Up to 4 levels of 3/4 BAB classes, or even 2 levels of 1/2 BAB classes and full BAB classes for the rest of the build would still be enough to get BAB 6.

It would let you get into Eldritch Knight with 4 levels of wizard or sorcerer and 2 levels of fighter, rather than needing 3 and 3 or more.
