According to 3.5 MM, Derros are immune to confusion and insanity effects.

I'm not sure what this might include, but I'm thinking they're immune to a psion's Psychotic Break.

Or is this inaccurate?

I'm fairly sure it's supposed to protect against effects like Confusion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/confusion.htm) and Insanity (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/insanity.htm), as well as anything directly referring to those. So no on Psychotic Break, unless you rule it to be a confusion effect.

Psychotic Break and Confusion are both compulsion, and I'm finding the language a bit gray.

Aid (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/aid.htm) is a compulsion as well. The descriptor is irrelevant.

A is B does not imply that B is A.

I think what your looking for is "A and B are both C, but A and B aren't the same"

No, because the apparent flaw in his logic was "if confusion is a compulsion effect, other compulsion effects (such as psychotic break) count as confusion effects". The point is that just because confusion is a compulsion effect, having protection from confusion doesn't equal protection from all compulsions. All B are not A.
