I'm looking primarily for outdoor maps with interesting terrain features. I enjoy DMing but mapmaking is kind of time-consuming in a busy life, so some premades for random or semi-random encounters would be good.

I usually type the type of thing I want into google images with the words "grid" and sometimes "D&D"

so like "bridge river grid D&D"

Usually gets me some decent maps. A lot of them come from pinterest where there are a lot of people uploading their (or other people's :smallfrown: ) maps.

You can find some good maps by googling for “battlemaps” or “encounter maps,” but this can be extremely time-consuming.

I’ve done a fair amount of this already, and have a reasonable collection of outdoorsy maps for encounters. Send me a PM and let me know if there’s anything in particular you need—I can try looking through my files to see if I’ve got a match.

Are you playing online or face-to-face? Are you willing to spend a few dollars? "A few" being probably 50 or less for a good selection of maps?

It's a bit annoying to browse, this should be what you want: https://rpgcharacters.wordpress.com/

WotC Map-A-Week Archive (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/mw)

Playing online on roll20. I'd rather keep money spent under about $20.

You weren’t kidding, that site really makes you work to find those maps—and from what I can see, they’re not the best quality. Neither are the Map-A-Week entries from WotC—those are generally poorly drawn and too low-res to use as tabletop maps.

For print-ready encounter maps, I’d recommend the Cartographers’ Guild (https://www.cartographersguild.com), which has superlative maps at every scale, from entire campaign worlds to cities, towns and close-in battlemaps. For a couple of examples, here’s a basic roadside tavern (https://www.cartographersguild.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=58501&d=1382099559), and here’s a bridge over a misty forest (https://www.cartographersguild.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=56798&d=1376253857). (Be sure to check out other threads by Jacktannery, he’s astounding.)

I've used these tools in a few games when I needed something in a hurry.

DavesMapper - basically several maps that you can tile into whatever

DonJon - random dungeon generator

FrugalGM - usually has quite a few maps for free

I know you were looking for something on the quick and cheap side, but if you ever get a photo editor program (Photoshop, Gimp, etc) you could save patterns as tiles and create your own maps. A few hours and you can have some great looking ones.

I have some, it's more the "finding a few hours" problem right now. I used to make more of my own maps. I also used to be unemployed.

You can just keep pressing "previous post", you know. There should be a different map posted.

Depends on what you want them for. If you want to print lots of maps, fancy stuff might not result in fancy quality, unless you are willing to cough up some cash. Not to mention, simplicity allows to just draw with a pencil what I want, and it will be noticeable.

That's not a factor for online maps, obviously.

Check out Gabriel Pickard's stuff in the Roll20 Marketplace. He's pretty much the only person I buy map content from. His "Quick Encounters" and "Save vs. Cave" series are mostly pre-generated encounter maps, while the "Vile Tiles" series is more for building your own maps. For $20, you can pick up three or four of his packs and have a good selection.

DM's guild (http://www.dmsguild.com/) has decent maps, and quite a few of them are free, too (https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/5ymg3g/lots_of_free_dungeon_battle_maps/).
