I branched out to this idea when it was confirmed (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2952816&postcount=992) to me that a certain usage of Ray of Enfeeblement was not permitted, by the RAW. The Spell Focus (Necromancy) seem silly as Ray of Enfeeblement does not normally allow a save, but it is meant to build up fluff, and act as a cost to enter the class. Kindly PEACH, if you can. I am concerned about general balance, particularly if this guy can throw around CON penalties too easily. I hope the plability is high, as it can hit anyone with its main abilities, to great affect: neutralizing spellcasters or heavily armored enemies with equal fervor. Thanks to Fax for the table code.

Entry Requirements
Spell Focus (Necromancy) or Necromancer Wizard Specialist

Class skills: Concentration, Craft, Knowledge (arcana), Profession and Spellcraft.

Spellcasting
The Great Enfeebler must select one arcane spellcasting class upon taking a level in this prestige class. Once the choice is made, it cannot be changed. All effects of this class, including class abilities and arcane spellcasting advancement apply only to this class. The arcane spellcasting class selected must meet the caster level requirements and have the ability to cast Ray of Enfeeblement (as outlined in the requirement section of this class).

Every level, the Great Enfeebler's caster level still rises by 1, but only for castings of Ray of Enfeeblement. The Great Enfeebler does not actually gain any spellcasting advancement.

By taking this class, the character is furthermore prohibited from taking any feat that requires the selection of one particular spell (Such as Arcane Thesis) in which the selection is not Ray of Enfeeblement.

Adaptability
At 1st level, the Great Enfeebler may opt to change the penalty imposed by Ray of Enfeeblement. He may select one other ability score, and from now on, whenever he prepares or spontaneously casts Ray of Enfeeblement, he may opt to have that casting effect the selected ability score, rather than strength. He may select a different ability score at each new level of Great Enfeebler, until level 5 where he may opt to prepare or spontaneously cast the spell to affect any one of the six ability scores. This ability can never be used to reduce an ability score below 1.

Arcane Thesis
At 1st level, the Great Enfeebler may treat Ray of Enfeeblement as though he had taken Arcane Thesis (PHBII) and had selected Ray of Enfeeblement as his choice spell.

Cursecraft
Starting at 2nd level, the Great Enfeebler further specializes in casting his choice spell. If his selected spellcasting class is a spontaneous one he casts Ray of Enfeeblement at a caster level 2 levels higher than normal. If he normally prepares spells beforehand, he may treat Ray of Enfeeblement as though it had the Signature Spell (PGF) feat applied to it.

Unending Humiliation
Starting at 2nd level, whenever the Great Enfeebler casts Ray of Enfeeblement, it is affected as if under the Extend Spell metamagic feat, without any change to spell level.

Resilient Curse
At 3rd level, the Great Enfeebler's caster level is treated as 4 levels higher when dealing with Dispel Magic attempts or Counterspell attempts against any casting or effect of his Ray of Enfeeblement.

Greater Ray of Enfeeblement
Starting at 4th level, whenever the Great Enfeebler rolls damage for his Ray of Enfeeblement spell, the penalty imposed is instead 1d6 +1 per two caster levels (maximum 10).

Splash of Misery
At 5th level, whenever the Great Enfeebler succeeds in imposing an ability score penalty to a target using Ray of Enfeeblement, he may opt to have any creature adjacent to the target take a -1 penalty to that same ability score. This affect cannot be dispelled on its own, but it lasts as long as the main target's effect, and is dispelled if the main effect is dispelled. For each secondary target affected in this manner, the Great Enfeebler must succeed on a ranged touch attack at the same bonus used on the main target, though at a -5 penalty. The secondary affect is overlapped by superior penalties inflicted by Ray of Enfeeblement to the same score.

Since you can't get into this class before level 7 (taking the 8th level in this PrC) then Unending Humiliation will max out the next level... I would up the cap on the static bonus, instead of increasing the die type maybe. That way it would keep scaling up at higher levels making this class more meaningful of a change vs a pure base-class build for a greater range of levels.

You have a few interesting concepts. The special abilities are fairly unique. It's a little overly complex though.

The 10 skill rank requirement means you can't get in till level 7 which makes the caster level requirement redundant.

The caster level bonus is slightly confusing. You gain a bonus to effective caster level for the purpose of casting ray of enfeeblement at levels 1 and 2, and 3-5 are actual caster level increases? It would be nice if you could make that clearer.

Lots of other stuff...

It's a playable class (I think) no, I thought it out more. (below) but it's too specialized to appeal to most players. And there's the fact that it's a level 1 spell...

Oh yeah, I think your concern about handing out con penalties too easily is justified. It would be way too easy to hit someone with a maximized ray of enfeeblement and deal 15 points of ability penalty. *shivers*

I took 10 (max roll) con damage from a poison once. I ended up with 14 max hp after that (my level in hp). I'm glad I was outside combat so I could heal the damage after that near death experience (I'm lucky I had no damage too). Taking a penalty of 15 to an ability score with no save can screw just about any character.

The arcane thesis and improved everything (plus the low level of the spell to begin with) lets casters metamagic this like mad. I can imagine quickened (and/or chained :smalleek: ) maximized rays of enfeeblement going and zapping multiple targets per round every round. Nevermind... that's just crazy. I don't usually play spellcasting classes, but that seems a bit above and beyond the normal ownage wizards do. Maybe it's not so playable after all...

Since the class focuses on a level 1 spell, you really need to provide some sort of benefit to casting the spell with a higher level spell slot, also giving preparation casters the ability to spontaneously cast the spell is a good idea.

Had thought about that, but ended up going with the die increase. Forgot that they would reach the cap, though, agreed. Will change.

Didn't want them taking 1 level of a caster and then going on to something else, while still pumping the skills somehow.

Joltz: I'm inclined to agree with the balance issue, as I said before. I think, maybe I should remove the spellcasting advancement altogether, and just have it increase Ray of Enfeeblement CL. Comments?

Well, they can really pump it with metamagic, and the Signature spell allows spontaneous casting, no?
