Hi, I'm helping a friend come up with monsters for a dungeon. He wants to use Blood Golems, but they're only CR 6 and we're average level 15. Any templates that could make the difference so we could face four of them.

The Golems can be Advanced by their HD if nothing else, as outlined here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm).

Templates that can be applied to Constructs are very few, the following I found only needed the base creature to be Corporeal, not necessarily living.

Shadow Creature (Manual of the Planes)
Pseudonatural (Complete Arcane)
Faerzress-Infused (Underdark)
Phantom (Monster Manual 5)
Icebeast (Frostburn)

I hope that helps!

Sacred Guardian, from the Revised Bestiary of Krynn. One of the few templates to grant intelligence to a construct, rather than relying on awaken construct's remedial Int score. Also very flavorful-and can be very potent-imagine a bunch of golems with their own undead minions. Just stay away from the Death ability-Souldrinker natural weapons do not for a happy party make.

You can also raise the CR of the encounter in other ways. Add more of them, or complementary creatures like something that could help heal them. Stick area magic traps in the room that they will be immune to but the party won't, like lightning bolts or fireballs.

The 3rd party book Advanced Bestiary had some good ones (expected as it is a book of template).

Two templates of note
Soulfused Construct (MoI) makes them living constructs (which will mean a loss of some immunities, not that the party will necessarily know that) but gives them an intelligence score, and with it the ability to take feats and (more importantly) classes which can add some real tricks.

Hivenest from Dungeonscape puts one or more swarms inside of it for some extra threat. You can consider something that fits along with it, like a leech swarm, or something totally different, like a spider swarm.

Well, if you want a blood-themed golem template, there's Bloodstained (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/pg20011212b). The template conflicts itself on whether or not it can be applied to constructs, but fixing that is as easy as houseruling in a single word.

Blood Golem of Hextor (Fiend Folio) is CR 8
This Blood Golem (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/pg20020731x) is CR 7
Blood Golem from Diablo d20 tabletop adaptation is CR 3
Blood Rock Golem of Erythnul (from Fantastic Locations: The Frostfell Rift) is CR 13

Anyway, there is Glyph Guardian in Dragon #302 with CR +3
Phantom from Monster Manual V add CR +2

Also, unless the friend is strongly against the idea of sentient Golem, how about some class levels? Say, Warblade focused on Iron Heart and Tiger Claw disciplines, or Crusader of Hextor/Erythnul...

This is the Blood Golem I was talking about. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/constructs/golem/golem-blood/)

- Take the CR value of the number of blood golems you originally planned
- Increase that to the party's APL of 15 (or APL +1, APL +2 etc. depending on how hard you want to make it.)
- Take the difference in XP reward between the two values
- That number is your XP budget for making the encounter harder. Use that to add things to the encounter accordingly (more golems, beefier/advanced golems, templates, additional monsters, traps etc.)

For more detailed info, see the GM's Guide to Creating Challenging Encounters in my sig.
