Quintessence Adept

The Mindflayers of Thoon are a cult of Illithids, twisted and corrupted by contact with the Far Planes, who serve a unspeakable force or entity known as Thoon. They gather and exploit quintessence, a mysterious but powerful substance found in certain rare materials, and even within living things. The most powerful psychic and mages among the cult of Thoon perform an aberrant and profane ritual in which they saturate themselves with quintessence, replacing their own blood with the mysterious fluid. Doing so allows them to tap the quintessence within themselves, drawing on great power. Those who have performed this ritual are known as Quintessence Adepts. Although most Quintessence Adepts are Thoon Disciples, sometimes other Illithids are brought into the cult through the ritual of quintessence, becoming Adepts themselves. Even non-Illithids who swear loyalty to Thoon may be allowed to undergo the ritual, although doing so twists their bodies even more than it does to Illithid Adepts. For more information on quintessence and the Mind Flayers of Thoon, see Monster Manual V.

Class Features
All the following are class features of the Quintessence Adept prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency
You gain no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Spellcasting/Manifesting
Whenever you gain a new Quintessence Adept level, you gain new spells or power points per day and spells or powers known as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting or manifesting class you belonged to before you added the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained.

Aberration Blood (Ex)
The ritual of quintessence that allows one to become an Adept wreaks strange transformations on non-Illithids who participate in it. At 1st level, if you are not an Aberration, you gain Aberration Blood (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Aberration_Blood,all) as a bonus feat. If you already have that feat, you may choose to take it again, or to gain any other aberrant feat whose prerequisites you meet as a bonus feat.

Quintessence Healing (Ex)
Your body has been infused with the energies of quintessence, and you can heal yourself by consuming more of it. As a move action, you can consume a gallon of quintessence. Doing so heals you 1d10 hp/2 levels, rounded up. The cult of Thoon allows you a supply of quintessence, allowing you to keep a single matrix of quintessence, which holds a single gallon, for yourself. You can refill this matrix as necessary when returning to the nautiloid ship that serves as the cult’s headquarters. In addition, you may be able to acquire quintessence from other sources. However, the effects of quintessence on your body make you more difficult to heal by normal means. Cure spells and other spells that use positive energy to heal restore only half as much hp as normal to you.

Channel Quintessence (Su)
At 2nd level, you can channel the quintessence within you to fuel your spellcasting or psionics. As a swift action, you may expend an amount of hp up to twice your class level. If you do so, you may either gain a number of power points equal to the number of hp expended, or gain a bonus spell slot whose level is equal to half the number of hp expended, rounded down. If you prepare spells, you may prepare a spell in the bonus slot immediately. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 10d6 minutes before you can use it again.

Aspect of Thoon
As you progress in the path of the Quintessence Adept, your mind and body are transformed by your mass consumption of quintessence, further metamorphosing you. At 3rd, 6th, or 9th levels, you may choose one of the following aspects of Thoon to gain. Some aspects have prerequisites you must meet to take them; these are listed in their descriptions. Alternatively, you may take any aberrant feat whose prerequisites you meet as a bonus feat in place of an aspect of Thoon.

Mind of Thoon (Ps and Su)
You gain telepathy out to 100 ft. If you already have telepathy, then its range is increased by 100 ft. In addition, you may use read thoughts at will as a psi-like ability, with manifester level equal to your class level. However, once you have used it, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Blast of Thoon (Su)
You gain the ability to use the mind blast ability of an Illithid. Once per day, you may fire a 60 ft. cone of psychic energy that stuns all creatures caught within it for 3d4 rounds. Creatures may attempt a Will save, DC 10 + your classs level + your primary casting or manifesting stat modifier, to avoid being stunned. You may use this ability one per day. If you already have the mind blast ability, then instead, you may choose to either increase its range by 30 ft. or to increase its DC by 2. You must be a 6th-level Quintessence Adept to gain this aspect of Thoon.

Tendrils of Thoon (Ex)
You become more twisted and aberrant in form, gaining four tentacle attacks that deal 1d4 damage if you are Medium, 1d3 damage if you are small, and so on. If you already have a tentacle attack, then you instead gain Improved Natural Weapon (Tentacle) as a bonus feat, and gain a +2 bonus on all grapple checks made using your tentacles.

Lore of Thoon (Ps)
You may use hypercognition once per as a psi-like ability, with manifester level equal to your class level. You must be a 6th-level Quintessence Adept to gain this aspect of Thoon.

Resilience of Thoon (Ex)
You gain fast healing 1. However, this healing only functions if you are at or below half of your maximum hp. If you already have fast healing, then the amount of your healing instead increases by one. You must be a 6th-level Quintessence Adept to gain this aspect of Thoon.

Scales of Thoon (Ex)
Your body is covered in thick, plate-like scales, granting you an increase to your natural AC bonus equal to half your class level.

Wings of Thoon (Ex)
You grow membranous, aberrant wings, allowing you to fly at a speed of 60 ft., with good maneuverability. You must be a 9th-level Quintessence Adept to gain this aspect of Thoon.

Quintessence Endowment (Su)
At 4th level, you can empower your magic or manifesting with energy drawn from the quintessence within you. Whenever you manifest a power or cast a spell, you may expend an amount of hp up to twice your class level. For every 5 hp expended this way, the DC of the spell or power increases by one, and you gain a +1 bonus on caster or manifester level checks made to overcome spell or power resistance.

Quintessence Metapotence (Su)
At 5th level, you can fuel metamagic or metapsionics with your mastery of quintessence. Whenever you cast a spell or manifest a power, you may expend an amount of hp up to twice your class level. You can then apply metamagic or metapsionic feats to the spell or power without changing its level, casting time, or power point cost. For each 5 hp expended, you may apply +1 spell level worth of metamagic, or +2 power points worth of metapsionic feats.

Spawn Thrall (Su)
At 7th level, you can infuse a humanoid creature with quintessence to transform it into a Thoon Thrall (see Monster Manual V). Doing so takes one minute, during which the subject must be helpless–bound up, magically held, or unconscious–and you must expend 5 hp per HD of the creature. You cannot transform a creature into a thrall unless it has at least 2 less HD than you. The Thoon Thrall, once created, is permanently bound to you, obeying your commands as if dominated, with no saves allowed to resist your orders. You may only use this ability once per week, and you cannot use it if you already control a Thoon Thrall.

Quintessence Surge (Su)
8th level, you tap the quintessence within you for a burst of energy, allowing you to act with blinding speed. As a swift action, you may expend 20 hp to take an additional move or standard action this round.

Wrath of Thoon (Su)
At 10th level, you can unleash a psychokinetic wave of energy derived from quintessence. Once per day as a full round action, you can create a 60-ft. burst of telekinetic force, centered on you. All creatures caught in the burst take 15d4 points of force damage and are stunned for 3d4 rounds. A successful Will save, DC 20 + your primary casting or manifesting stat, halves the damage and negates the stunning. In addition, when you use this ability, you may expend up to 25 hp. For every 5 hp you expend, you may either increase the amount of damage by 1d4, increase the range by 10 ft., or increase the saving throw DC by 1.

Ok, serious critique now...

Channel Quintessence (Su)
At 2nd level, you can channel the quintessence within you to fuel your spellcasting or psionics. As a swift action, you may expend an amount of hp up to twice your class level. If you do so, you may either gain a number of power points equal to the number of hp expended, or gain a bonus spell slot whose level is equal to half the number of power points expended, rounded down. If you prepare spells, you may prepare a spell in the bonus slot immediately.

Should be "hit points expended".

Quintessence Metapotence (Su)
At 5th level, you can fuel metamagic or metapsionics with your mastery of quintessence. Whenever you cast a spell or manifest a power, amount of hp up to twice your class level. You can then apply metamagic or metapsionic feats to the spell or power without changing its level, casting time, or power point cost. For each 5 hp expended, you may apply +1 spell level worth of metamagic, or +2 power points worth of metapsionic feats.

Should be "you may expend an amount of hp".

You may only use this ability once per week, and you cannot use it if you already control a Thoon Thrall.

Should be "created".

As it's written, this allows for infinite pp and spell slots, as long as you have a healing wand laying about. Some sort of a limit would be good.

Also, the two major characteristics of quitessence (going by the SRD, anyway) are its time-stasis properties and its psionic interference properties. Neither of these really come up- it seems more like a kind of caster that just uses his blood for various material components than anything to do with quintessence. It's still a cool class, but the flavor just seems a little off.*

Also also, you have the capstone ability named both "Wrath of Thoon" and "Might of Thoon." Wrath always sounds cooler, I think.

*I'm assuming the flavor is off. I haven't even looked at MMV, nor heard of "Sense Quintessence." Do they go more into detail about quintessence in MMV?

Good point, I've added a delay. However, do note that healing is only half as effective as normal for these guys.

The quintessence used by the Mind Flayers of Thoon is different from the psionic power quintessence, and detailed in MMV. One is shiny time-stopping goo, the other is MacGuffin juice.

Wrath it is.

Aw... I'm kind of sad about that. I always thought Quintessence was an intriguing concept, but I've never really seen anything done with it.

The other stuff looks good- I was picturing a psion leveling a battlefield with his blasts, going off into a cave for a half hour, and then doing it again, and again, until he got sleepy. And if he had a ring of sustenance, he wouldn't even need that. The delay seems like a good fix.

Okay, how about tonight I make a 3 or 5 level PrC that specializes in just that.
