View Full Version : Half-Ogre without the size-increased-attributes, still worth it?

OK, ignoring Half-Ogre's explicit statement to add +8 strength/+4 Con/etc, from advancing in size (which makes it exceedingly powerful), it has a modest +2 improvement to your natural armor, a +4 strength for -2 to 2 mental stats that a strength user probably couldn't care about, and becomes large size with +10 speed.

That seems all-in-all fairly modest, but potentially acceptable, what with becoming large and all. Is it worth it though? What if the bonuses from advancing in size were halved?

A +1 template that makes a humanoid race large (plus some added bonuses) while retaining said humanoid race has value for certain builds.

Is this Half Ogre from PF Tome of secrets ?

I find him not too shabby and a great idea foundation for a butt kicker . My only problem is there is nothing that makes you feel like you are playing an ogre . Its just AB points being tweaked .

A half orc has access to lots and lots of racial feats and has distinct racial features .

No, it's a template from Dragon Magazine.

In a compare/contrast to the Savage Species/Races of Destiny Half-Ogre, the size increase with stat boosts for size is much stronger for +1. (Too much, IMO.)

Orc + Half-Ogre is comparable to SS HOgre, but add on size stat boosts and it goes thru the roof.

Races of Destiny updated it to LA +2. Its stats are +6 Str, -2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha. Because it's a race there's no adjustment for size, and you definitely pay for what you get. That being said, I'm a big fan of pairing it with the Primordial Giant template, which is LA +0 and gives at will invisibility (or invisibility purge or levitate), and with those stat adjustment rolled in you're at +2 Str, -2 Dex, +2 Int, +2 Cha, which is very workable.

Races of Ansalon has a half ogre that's medium.

Just to be clear, you mean without the extra attributes you get for changing in size, but you still DO become large?

In which case, if you are going for a melee focused build, it's totally worth it. Large size is amazing for melee.
- Increased reach is always very helpful.
- Bonuses to trip/grapple/etc are great and central to some builds.
- Some free damage for using a bigger weapon doesn't hurt, especially if you stack size increases further.
- Some feats and classes are only open to large characters, Knockback feat is great, and a Warhulk can be made very deadly.

So yeah, just the change in size is worth the +1 LA for the right build.

Cool. OK. Thanks.
