View Full Version : Portable Good android RPGs?

So I've had it up to here with games designed for Android that somehow do not include a way to import/export saved game data!!! :smallfurious::smallfurious::smallfurious::smallfu rious::smallfurious:

OK, I'm really irritated right now because I am facing a factory reset on my phone to fix an issue and both of the games I've been playing will lose all their progress. Like seriously, who designs a game for a mobile device that has no way to transfer saved games? Stupidest design flaw ever, but it's frustratingly common. [/rant]

So any good suggestions for Android RPGs that can transfer data to another device?

Here are the criteria -

1. Text isn't eye-killingly small. I'm looking at you, Shadowrun games. I love the Harebrained Schemes version of Shadowrun, I've played a couple of them on the PC, but I just tried one on my phone and there is no way to increase the text size. My eyes were dying after just a couple of minutes.

2. None of these Log-In-Every-Day-To-Get-A-Reward. I loved FF Brave Exvius, but the daily thing was just killing me. You could say I should ignore it, but I can't. It's like crack for me, and if I install 1 or two more of these great daily games, it eats up all my time and I begin hating it. Best to stay with a static game that has no push to log in every day to collect a new reward or the like.

3. Can be turn based or action or 3d or whatever. Angry birds in general drives me crazy, but I enjoyed Angry Birds RPG.

4. I'd like to not spend a lot of money - some of the older FF games cost $15+ to buy, and while I know they are fun, there are equally good games for much less. I'm not stuck on FTP only, I'll spend a few bucks for a decent game. I tend to avoid PC ports to Android for the text problem as well as the fact that I've played a bunch of them already, like Baldur's Gate and the other Black Isles games.

Mobile games I have enjoyed for various reasons: Mage Gauntlet (no way to transfer data!), Symphony of Eternity (same), Doom & Destiny (yes, I picked up the mobile RPG Humble Bundle), Marvel Future Fight, FF Brave Exvius, DC Legends (all three of these were daily log in games), Angry Birds RPG, Asdivine Menace (also no save game transfer)

I may come up with additional criteria as I think about it.

Suggestions?

Knights of Pen and Paper (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.beholdstudios.knightspp&hl=en)was fun and enjoyable. It's a one-time playthrough, IMO... I didn't want to grind through it a second time for the same jokes and gameplay... but it was fun to go through.

Sword and Glory (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.IfelseMedia.SwordAndGlory&hl=en) is somewhat Roguelike, but has some fun in it. You WILL die.

Pathfinder Adventurers (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.obsidian.pacg1&hl=en) wasn't too bad, but I got bored after a while.

Wandroid (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wandroid.ofmo.f) is a port of the old Wizardry games to Android, and comes in a free version and a paid version.

Heroes of Steel (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tresebrothers.games.heroesofsteel) had a fun free intro, but I didn't want to pay for later content (because I am poor AND cheap).

I got started a bit in Warhammer 40k: Spacewolf (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herocraft.spacewolf), and it was OK, but I made some bad choices and didn't feel like starting over.

I miss Star Wars: Uprising, and would love to find a game similar to that.

Oh wow, Heroes of Steel is really good! I just might spring for the whole game. Thanks for the suggestions, this will keep me busy for a while.:smallwink:

Pretty sure the "epic battle fantasy" series is on android.
I believe they are up to the fourth game now.
It's a lot like the early final fantasy games,
vary strategic though, and it has a great sense of humor.

I like Siralim 2. It's influenced by M:tG, Procedural Dungeon crawls, and the Dragon Warrior Monsters (plus Pokemon to a lesser degree) series. Basically, summon monsters, level 'em up, breed them, kill things. There's not really a story, but it's a fun little dungeon crawl. Plus, you can export/import save data across platforms or to multiple devices.

Guild of dungeoneering is good fun. I believe the saved games are tied to the Google account and not the device, but I'm not certain.

Always sometimes monsters is another favorite of mine.

I have avoided it, because of size. It's so tiny, I don't want to try to read stuff on a tiny screen.

Do you root your device? That will let you transfer your app data (including saves) no matter what you're playing.

There are guides for the more popular devices (i.e. the ones powerful enough to game on) on sites like androidauthority, xda etc.

Mmmmm It's a perfectly valid point, and I seem to remember the writing wasn't that large on the PC version. That said, I need a time waster for meetings at work.

If I appear to be squinting at my groin while at a meeting, do you think they'll get suspicious?

Perhaps you are just taking notes.

Knights of the Old Republic is on Android as well, but has the same problem. Just feels clunky.

The tiny text issue is easily resolved by playing it on a tablet.
