Sometime in the history of the human race, a large population of sorcerers decided that they were above their nonmagical kin and broke off to form a new society in secret. By breeding only with those who had the spark of magic inside them, this spark was amplified, and a new race of powerful spell users eventually came into being. They called themselves the arkaballans.

Each arkaballan found himself able to easily manipulate spells in a certain way, and he even found great physical or mental differences between himself and his comrades based on his style of spell-shaping. Their individual power being so easy to classify, a social class system was naturally put in place which separated the different arkaballans from each other. At the top of the ladder were the quicks, who could cast spells so quickly that they were unchallenged by any of the other arkaballans. If the quicks were the ruling class, the maximin, with their ability to reliably get the most out of any spell, were the advisors. The empors, with their ability to unreliably get better results out of a spell than their superiors, became the royal guards. The enlargo, extenda, silenu, stilldar, and widus became the peasants. New variations on the arkaballan bloodline constantly surface, though unless they are extraordinarily powerful, they are spat on even by the peasants. Examples of this are the firen, colden, lectren, and ciden, and even later on the sculpi and the transi.

All arkaballan have two things in common - a love for magic, and a disgust for the nonmagical. They are collectively arrogant and snobby towards any mundane race such as halflings or orcs, but greatly respectful to the point of worship towards any magical race such as dragons or fey. This can get dangerous, as many arkaballans have attempted to summon devils or demons in attempts of increasing their personal power, and instead had their weak minds turned to evil.

Arkaballan cities are hidden by powerful illusions and antipathy spells. However, arkaballans look identical to humans with arrogant demeanors, and so frequently venture out of their cities in search of magical power with no worries about revealing the secrets of their hidden society.

Ooh! Ooh! Can I be a Persisti? Now that would be broken!
It's interesting that this is a highly customizable race with some really cool options, although my experience has been that when you give people this many options they will calculate the best one or two and those will be the only ones that get played.
It's also interesting that this is a race with a potentially high level adjustment intended for casters, the one type of class which hates LA the most. That is the only thing stopping me from straight out saying this is overpowered. I think it deserves some play-testing to see what it's effect on the game really is.
