Something interesting that emerged in the 'Funny bits of canon 3.5 lore' (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?519839-Funny-bits-of-canon-D-amp-D-3-5-lore&p=21949465) thread.

On page 110 of the PHB is a picture of a female adventurer. Apparently in some editions the name tag with her image is 'Naull', but in others it's 'Nerull'. This is of course a notable difference, and in this thread, I'd like to try and categorize which printings use one name and which use the other.

So please grab your PHB, look up the page, and post your findings and printing. For science!

I have a PDF of the Original 3.5 PHB (2003) and a physical copy of the Deluxe 3.5 PHB (2012 reprint). 2003 has Nerull while 2012 has Naull.

I'm 99% certain it's an OCR error for people using PDFs. The name Naull is never used anywhere else, whereas Nerull is used repeatedly, so, hypothetically, in the case of blurring/doubt in a particular word, the system that converted the text cross-indexes a dictionary of all words used, and subs in a likely candidate.

Edit: THIS was why, when I condensed my PDF collection, I prioritized live-text > scanned-image > OCR converts. OCR has too much error depending on the copy, not worth the savings in filesize.

Says "Naull" in the 2004 hardcover printing, so I suspect it's an error in PDF conversion.

I'm betting you all are using the same bad-OCRed PDF. Everyone posting is saying it's only in the 2003 first-print PDF.

I have a hardback from the first printing, July 2003, and the name is Naull. I tend to agree with the others who say this is a PDF issue, since it sounds like the 2012 deluxe reprint also correctly gives the spelling as Naull.

When I first read the OP, I knew instantly who this was, and it’s a shame that Naull has never appeared anywhere else. Her outfit looks like something an adventurer might actually wear—a little eccentric, but sensible and functional—and while I’m not a fan of facial piercings, they do set her apart from most of the other 3.5 iconics. There’s a much stronger sense of personality with Naull than just about anyone else in the book.

Given the page she's on, I can’t help but wonder if that was deliberate. Certainly works out that way.

If this is FOR SCIENCE!, I guess I'm in the control group - hardback November 2000 printing of the 3.0 PHB. Lists the character on p. 89 as Naull.

Well, for library science, anyway.

Could you post a picture? I believe this is the first case of a physical copy saying 'Nerull'.

She's called Naull in the official D&D novels. They're forgettable as hell, but still canon.

Is the "Naull" PDF searchable? Because if not, I couldn't begin to care less that mine (Nerull) has a typo.

1st printing July 2003: Naull.

Sidenote: my 3rd edition phb looks more beat up than my 1st edition players' handbook.

I have the 2006 paperback printing from the D&D Player's Kit boxed set. The name is "Naull".
