Actually, the rule is that you choose. Kind of like AC calculations. You now have two, but you can only use one. So obviously you're going to keep whichever total is the higher if they are different.

Now, the choice is obvious for this feature, but it might not be with, say, Armor of Agathys.

Because the spell ties another effect to the THP it gives you. If you trade it for another pool of THP, you lose the effect.
