One Bard, Too Many Flutes

So my fellow players have always talked about instruments that play by themselves whenever a character makes a Perform check but have never coughed up a name or source. Can one of the many geniuses on Giant tell me where to find them or the mechanics I can use behind them?

Never heard of these but it sounds to me as something that would be on Song and Silence splatbook

I think there are Resonating objects that carry a song after the player has stopped, but I can't recall anything that starts the performance on its own.

They may be thinking of a Harmonizing weapon (Magic Item Compendium p. 35). The weapon takes over your Bardic Music for you one round after you start, for up to 10 rounds. It quits if you start a new Bardic Music in the meantime.
