You are currently just outside King Ansolon Dellon's throne room. You all, being relatively well-known adventurers, were easily able to gain access, in order to make sure he knows his daughter will be made safe.

He is currently in a meeting with one of his nobles, though it's nearing its conclusion. For now, you might as well mingle with the others.

Also in the room with you is a servant-a young (wo)man who seems rather awed by your presence.

Anders smiles at the servant woman shyly before turning to the other adventurers.

I believe this is the part where we introduce ourselves and say what we can do. Anders says a sleeved hand from the small brown haired man moving to indicate himself.

I am Anders, and I am a wizard devoted to Illia. He said serenely, his head bowing slightly. In exchange she grants me powers of healing not available to normal wizards.

The short halfling was forced to tilt his head back slightly as he looked up. His rough hands fiddled with the buttons on the front of the shirt he had particularly pulled from its place amongst his belongings specifically for today. Despite his own opinions on the subject, people were usually expected to be fully clothed in front of kings. He listens to the first of his newfound companions introduce himself and he reaches behind his head to tie his unruly mess of red hair back as he introduces himself cheerfully; "The name's Finamin Hilltopple, but my friends call me Finn. Proud warrior of the Hilltopple Clan." By now he has finished tying his hair back in a very small ponytail, and extends his hand to shake anyone who accepts the gesture. "You sure look like a capable bunch. Plenty of glorious tales to be made await us, says I."

On his arrival Melkholt had taken a seat in a sturdy oaken chair which nonetheless creaked under the strain, and has not moved since doing so. His heavy pack lies propped against the chair's leg, while he taps his fingers anxiously against the flat of his wide shield which he currently holds on his lap. He nods to the others as they speak, and then sensing that he's expected to share he does so.
"Melkholt Flintsplitter, of Dustrun. Feelin' a mite out of my depth, if truth be told. Before this month I'd only ever been within the Kingdom of Dellon once. Doesn't seem quite right to so easily step in and have a word with his majesty. But if his majesty sees fit to have words with us then I'm no man to refuse him."

A half-elf likely comes in late, behind everyone else, in a grand spectacle of laughter and maybe just some slight stumbling. He plops down into a chair leaning his arm on one of the arm rests, and slings his leg over the other so he sits in the chair a little wonky. In his other hand, the one not leaning on the arm rest, is a jug with a cork stopper. What it is filled with you can only guess, but the half-elf pops the cork off and takes a long drag from it, putting the cork back and wiping his mouth with his sleeve.

His faces holds a large, dumb smile and it doesn't seem to leave his face from the moment you first see him. His clothes are baggy and slightly unkempt, and his blonde hair is shaggy seems to stick out in every direction. He has a lute that he takes off and sits next to him before leaning back into the chair. The striking thing about him is his eyes. They are a brighter, kelly type green and they seem to pierce right through you, even with that smile right below them. The half-elf aims those eyes at the servant and gives her a sly smile.

The half-elf stands, after everyone has introduced themselves, and give a slight bow. "I am Lucian Honeysong, instrument and singer extraordinaire. I suppose we will all be sharing the road to glory together, might as well have a fine time while we do it. It is a pleasure to meet all of you," Lucian then slyly steps over to the serving girl, takes her hand and plants a kiss on it while slightly bowing in front of her. He look up at her with his mischievous smile and bright eyes, "Especially you, beautiful." He gives her a wink and bends back upwards as he stares into her eyes.

"Meep!" the girl lets out, blushing bright crimson. She opens her mouth to say something else when the door opens and a tall, portly gentleman exits in a huff.

"The nerve of Ansolon! Girl, get my escort-I am leaving at once!" he says.

"Yes sir!" she says, quickly heading for the other door. Before leaving, though, she turns to the party, careful to not look at Lucian lest she blush even more. "Go ahead and enter-the King is waiting for you."

Lucian goes to pick up his lute, and does his best to meet the eyes of the serving girl. "Thank you, sweet lass," he says to her, still trying to meet her gaze with a half-smile. He then follows the others into the throne room, not speaking first, keeping to the back of the group, and slinging his lute back over his shoulder, it resting on his back.

Inside, the king has his head in his hands, seemingly tired or frustrated with his noble. As the group walks in, though, he lifts his head up and gives a weary smile.

"Good day, heroes. I see little need for preamble-you know why I need your services, and can trust that you will be rewarded handsomely for your duty. But, before you go, is there anything you require in terms of assistance? Horses, arms, rations-my kingdom is at your disposal to save my daughter."

Melkholt heaves himself to his feet, slings his hefty pack behind him, and holds his shield to his side as the young woman bids him step forward into the king's throne room. He stands stiffly upright while the king speaks, though his stature is hardly noble.
"Your majesty," he tilts his head down, not quite capable of bowing comfortably in his armor. "To begin, my condolences. I pray this turns out well, and by the grace of the All-Father it may yet. Before we speak of assistance, could you tell us more about the situation? I cannot speak for the others in the room but I myself am not from this land, and news of your daughters abduction came to me late. How long ago was she taken, and do you have any idea where to? Which direction to begin our search? I have heard tell that it was a red dragon that did the deed, as fearsome a beast as any I've known. How large was it, and did it seem fully grown?
While I hope to keep optimistic, I also don't want to make false promises if the threat of this beast is as great as it could be."

"It was some week and a half ago-you all came with great haste, to which I offer my thanks. The beast's lair is in Mount Vespid, to the east-home to many foul creatures besides the dragon itself. The dragon itself is, I think, still young-more than a match for my army, but not yet full grown. I cannot tell you its exact size-I wasn't present when it came, and my people were, understandably, too panicked to observe well," King Dellon says. "If you do not wish to undertake this task, I understand-but please. My daughter is my world."

Melk scratches his chin, hidden beneath his bushy beard.
"Are we the first to come forward to you about pursuing the dragon? No others have already left and either returned with failure or not at all? Four men are only four men, and if the dragon itself is a match for your very army...I don't suppose there is a battalion of guards, either under your employ or that of the city watch,
who could accompany us on the journey? I wouldn't turn down the aid of archers providing covering fire, especially should the beast take flight. If we pursue it to its lair then all odds are against us. But, your majesty..." Melk pauses, unsure how to phrase his thoughts delicately.
"You say your daughter was taken a week and a half ago. I do not wish to be indelicate, and I assure you I have only the greatest respect for your plight. But...what assurance do you have that her highness still lives? Unless the dragon has been in communication with you, ransoming your daughter, I cannot think of a reason it would...keep her a living captive. I am not ignorant in medicinal art and the powers of the divine, but even a priest of greater strength than myself would be hard pressed to return a soul to the world of the living if the spirit had gone from it for more than a week. I assure you every effort will be made, but what assurance do you have for us that this is not a fruitless task? Again, I beg your pardon, but it may be prudent to...anticipate the worst of this situation."

"My daughter is not..." the king starts, but cuts himself off. He closes his eyes, tears welling up, but when he opens them, they're clear. "If my daughter is no longer alive... Then I want the head of the beast that killed her. But I know... I feel her, still. I don't think she's gone yet."

He takes a few moments to properly recompose himself, then adds "I cannot send my guards with you. Dellon does not have a large standing army, and sending them to help in your task would leave us vulnerable to invasion from neighboring nations. Despite my own personal feelings, the health of my nation is more important than that of my daughter."

Well, unlike the cowardly dwarf, I will be leaving at fist light to find your precious princess. Or, if she does happen to be dragon-food.....bring the heart of the dragon back to you. Forgive me my liege. But what shall the reward for the princess's return, or the beast's head be. This is quite a dangerous task. Anders points out as he tries to recall all he knows about Mount Vespid

Turning to Lucian, Anders pipes up. He said he wanted the head. I mean I suppose we could bring both if we can carry it though. He corrects with a finger raised.

Almost as soon as the door closes on the dwarf, it swings open again, revealing a copper-scaled dragonborn. He walks with an air of confidence, but bows his head politely to the king.

BEEEEEEES! Mount Vespid is home to quite a few bees, due to sporadically appearing portals to an apiary in the nine hells.

Outside that, it's your standard mountain of doom. Various dire animals, a few umber hulks or similar, but nothing too odd.

"My court could use some people with worldly experience. A noble title, and all that comes with, as well as a sizable portion of land and wealth. I'm afraid I've been busier with finding heroes such as yourself to save her than figuring out what I can afford to give away, but you have my word you will receive ample compensation for your work," he says. Each horses' set of saddlebags includes one month of rations, 200' of silk rope, and up to 40 GP of miscellaneous mundane equipment. If you do not decide what equipment is in there now, the value drops to 20 GP, but you can use it as Schrodinger's equipment, and decide what it is in the field.

The horses are of a fine breed, tall and majestic, hardy and strong, with the saddlebags full of supplies.

The gates are open-well, at the moment, they can't be closed, due to dragon inflicted damage-and the way to the mountain is clear.

Having begun the first leg of their journey, he guides his horse a bit closer to the one Balnar, the most recent addition to their company, was riding. It was a bit difficult as his diminuitive stature made it a little difficult to balance on the large beast, but he manages to ride at a smooth pace with only a little more concentration than he usually needed for riding ponies. He had undone his shirt and placed it back in his pack where it belonged, now they were simply amongst themselves. He clears his throat and asks, "So, Master ... Balnar, was it? Finamin takes one hand off the reins of his horse to scratch his chin. He looks over his body for a moment and points at one thick, seemingly coarse line that runs over the first pair of abdominal muscles. "Lets see now, there was this one time I was roaming about, and stopped through a quaint little hamlet. Sensin' I was the sorta folk who'd be able to help 'em with a little problem, the local farmers told me of bears what were draggin' off cattle from the fields at night. So off I goes to track the cave and the beasts, and turns out t'were no bears at all. A pair of ogres had set themselves up in this fancy cave and had taken the cattle for themselves! So there I is, starin' up at the big ol' buggers and theys dumber than a sack o' rocks, so I gets the jump on em by yellin', 'BY THE FURY OF THE HILLTOPPLES!' So then ..." Finamin continues to tell his tale, embellishing the resulting fight scene of dipping, ducking, diving, and dodging between the two trolls and giving them a taste of his trusty rapier. His eyes flash with pride at having been able to best two creatures much, much bigger than himself, and his free hand attempts to make the grand sweeping gestures to make his tale as enrapturing as possible to Balnar as well as either of the other two companions, should they choose to listen. He continues to speak for a while, finally ending his tale with, "... and you shoulda seen the faces of those farmers when I come back draggin' two ogre heads behind me. T'was indeed a grand time, that one..."

Though the telling itself might leave something to be desired, Balnar senses the adventure is a point of pride for his new friend (not to mention impressive regardless) and chuckles at the conclusion of the story, imagining the farmers' faces. "A mighty deed, my friend. It is similar to a story from my time as a soldier. I had been cut off from my comrades and found myself alone in a forest filled with orcs..." His tale is slightly longer and contains less fighting in it's opening, mostly dodging patrols, but the action picks up as he describes walking into a clearing where some ten orcs had made camp. "So of course, what does a Myasam do in such a situation? He fights!" He describes the combat in some detail, before concluding that three were left alive, as they were joined by some five patrols who had heard the fighting and Balnar was forced to flee. "But of course, the orcs were too foolish to move their camp. Our force of only fifty routed nearly two hundred of them the next day." He chuckles and goes back to whittling.

No persuasion roll is needed here-though you rolled well. As a general roll, only roll if the outcome is reasonably in doubt-for this situation (running into friendly merchants) it's not, so there's no need to make a roll.

"Of course! Well... Let me talk to the master of this little caravan, see if he agrees. I have no doubt he will, but, well, best to be sure!" he says, then turns his head and speaks (loudly, but much quieter than he has been) back to some of his companions. Before long, he replies back to the group, saying "The master agrees, an excellent idea! We'll find a good spot and settle down for the night."

After perhaps a few more minutes, the two groups come together, settling down in a camp. The caravan has around a half dozen people pile out-the teamster, a human called Harridan Smith; the master, a dwarf named Johan Bergly; his wife, another dwarf named Vanessa Bergly; two porters, the elvish twins Avery and Jessica Went; and their accountant, a gnome by the name of Sybil Toscobble.

Johan and Vanessa settle around the fire that Harridan sets up, enjoying some ale, while Sybil sits atop the caravan, dealing with a small book of numbers. Harridan looks the group over, and comments "Quite a well-armed ensemble, eh? What are you doing here?" while the twins grab some stools and such from the caravan so everyone has room to sit.

Finamin is just short of completely enraptured with Balnar's story, occasionally needing to readjust his position on his mount to keep from entirely losing balance. He feels the high highs, the tension as orcish patrols move past the sneaking dragonborn in his mental theater. When the story is said and done, he notices how tightly he has been gripping the reins, his knuckles almost completely white. He gives a low whistle, thoroughly impressed with the tale he had been presented. "A brave soldier and quite the storyteller. Methinks we need to trade more stories when the chance arises."

Having settled his body into an offered chair by the fire, and makes a small noise of contentment after the day's ride. "A quest for glory, to right the wrongs a dragon has visited upon the capitol," he answers as to their purpose. He was unsure how much information should be shared, or how much news had already traveled to their Almirian hosts, and keeps his answer simple but truthful.

Lucian sits back, munching on some dinner and drinking his mead, watching Anders do his tricks and magic. He starts to play on his lute, a quiet tune, feeling his music flow through him and his magics starting to come alive. As he plays, the campfire seems to fade down and a cloud of tiny, tiny, yellow lights flow out of his lute. They swirl around Anders' flowers, picking them up and carrying them around the heads of the watching elves. The light burst, letting the flowers fall back to the ground. A blue smoke then flows out of the flowers and starts to creep on the ground to the two. It climbs up their limbs and swirls around their head, blocking their view.

The smoke quickly clears out of the way, and when they look again...Lucian is no longer there. Instead there is an angel playing the lute. He is has a golden glow about him, and small little sparks go off around him every now and again. He has celestial armor, and his wings seem to pulse with the music. He has great, long, golden, flowing hair that seems to sparkle as well. The music crescendos and a large pop sounds out, with an accompanying flash of light. And when the lights and smoke are gone, the campfire moves back to its original brightness and all they see is Lucian with his lute, taking a drag from his jug, big smile on his face.

Something doesn't feel right....." Lucian squats down in front of the little kobold.

"Why would your master want to parley with us. Or even give us that change to a fair fight? That doesn't make any sense.....I hope you are not lying to us, little scale."

"I swear, she has offered her word! I speak only the truth!"

Telling the truth.

Truthiness is here.

The truth is good to go.

Kobold, truth? Match.

Kobold's telling the truth.

Yes, truth speaking is occurring.

Lucian thinks he is telling the truth......but he wants to make sure. He takes a great swig of his mead and stares the little guy down, then he points a finger to the kobold and whispers. This whisper is something no one else can hear but the little kobold.

In draconic: "If you are lying to us, my friends here will take you to a bear cave and leave you there, tied up, to be eaten alive by a hungry bear. Do we have an understanding?
Just nod."

Balnar shakes his head. No sense letting her know we're coming. The kobold thinks she means what she says, but Finn said he spotted friends of his not to far from us. Could be a trap. He regards the kobold and begins speaking in the harsh dragon tongue again.

What are those kobolds by the rocks doing here?

Balnar turns to his companions and speaks again in Common Shall we ask them to come out peaceably then? They've offered us no resistance so far and I'd sooner have them in eyesight than risk them running off to give away our location. He casts an eye to Finn Apparently this one was worried we'd kill him. Asked his friends along, but they aren't supposed to do us any harm if he's kept in one piece.

Balnar sets his hand casually on the hilt of his sword, eyes not moving from their captive. If they desire a fight, I'll gladly meet them. Can you see if they have bows or slings? He seems to realize something and glances at the halfling Sorry, Finn. He says he works for the dragon and supposedly it wants a "fair fight". Anders is trying to set up a trade for the princess instead.

Finamin answers, "Little bows 'n swords. If they do attack, we could take 'em, easy." Turning his head to look at the rest of his group as he listens to each of the suggestions, he adds his opinion. "This whole thing sounds odder than a dwarf goin' sailing, but a fight's a fight. If the dragon wants to invite us to its own asskicking, I don't see why not. Even better if its to be an honorable fight. Either way we can take its head back to the king."

Balnar sighs and mounts his horse, raising a brow at the wizard Anders, sometimes you must face a challenge head on. This dragon may well have a trap prepared for us. Or perhaps she sees us as nothing more than ants to her power. But whatever the case may be, so long as we keep our wits about us, I say we charge on. He regards the kobolds, something akin to pity crossing his face Besides, I'm growing weary of dealing with these boot licking wee ones. The sooner we face the dragon, the better.

Finamin looks on as the other continue to converse with the kobolds in the strange language, only finally being stirred from concentration once Balnar speaks up again in Common. He tugs at the reins of his own horse, preparing to leave as soon as everyone is ready. "So that's it then? These little fellas are going to lead us right to the dragon so we can slay it?"

Balnar shrugs We could try to lose them and get there first, I suppose. He scratches his chin, the sound of his nails against scales like scraping rock. I fear the dragon has us outmaneuvered. If she hadn't sent the kobolds, we could sneak up on her. But there is little we can do to prevent them possibly warning her, short of killing them. And I dislike the notion He casts an eye to Lucian. Although, a distraction or surprise at the right moment could throw her off.

The kobolds begin leading the way, nervous about the horses.

"It'll be some time before we arrive-but the beasts of the forests and mountain know not to attack us. We are marked with our lady's scent."

Right, you've secured safe passage all the way up to Mount Vespid. Assuming, of course, the scent doesn't wash off in time...

Anyone have objections to another, few day time skip? And, if we do do that, any actions you wish to declare, such as dangling juicy magical tidbits in front of their noses?

Balnar grows more cautious as they get closer to the dragon's lair. He heartens considerably when they make camp, but his eyes are constantly shifting, checking every tree and bush. In the saddle, he has ceased whittling, though occasionally he tries to lighten the mood with conversation and humor. One night, he asks the kobolds their names, but if they do not give them, he makes up names for them in common. Occasionally he'll try to talk tactics with the others if they'll listen.

I have no problem skipping ahead a bit. I figure Balnar has nothing to say in terms of magic, so he's mostly keeping an eye on their surroundings.

Finamin chimes in with something that had been bothering him for some time, lowering his voice to not disturb Ander or the Kobolds. "Should we even be considering a trade? Sure, we get the girl back, but the king seemed pretty clear that he wants this dragon dead. And if he hears we gave the dragon magical secrets too ... I jus' don't like it..." How exactly you plan on doing that, is up to you. Lucian sits with his jug next to him, plucking on his lute and keeping the camp calm with his music. He listens to the others, take occasional drags from his jug and somehow doesn't stop playing the whole time. That is almost more impressive than the music he's playing.

The others get on the subject of trusting a dragon, and Lucian just smiles and shakes his head. "You can't trust a red. They want nothing but more gold and power and they will do most anything to get it. If that means agreeing to let go the Princess for magical secrets, then eating us right afterwards.....it will happen. Better to kill it now, than leave it alive and have both a dragon and a King wanting us dead."

Balnar shakes his head The dragon has not agreed to a trade. Her minions simply told us it wants a fair fight. The kobolds themselves simply have an interest in magic. I would be willing to believe it may be a tempting offer for their mistress, if they are anything to judge her by, but for all we know, she will attack us on sight. Even if she does not, Lucian has a point. The dragon may very well agree, then attack after she has what she wants. He pauses and stares into the fire for a moment She's challenged us to a fight, so she thinks she can win. And she wanted the princess for a reason. Why not take what she can from you, then try to kill us all and keep the princess?
