Well, that answers why Roy and Durkon used both pronouns for the Oracle before.

And Vaarsuvius, of course, doesn't see what difference it makes. Sometimes I like Vaarsuvius a lot.

I think the oracle was a bearded lady with blue hair and a second nose in her armpit.

Rich, you're awesome.

Third page, you're slightly less awesome, but still pretty good.

Thomar, you scare me, but that'd still be pretty cool if it was done right.

Belkar, you sadden me - why won't you realize that there had to be some reason you wanted to kill the Oracle as much as you wanted to kill any of the others?

Heh, I liked how Elan, Belkar, and V-(wo)man thought the Oracle was a member of their own race. Plus, V not seeing why it mattered.

I suppose we'll be getting char reactions to their fates over the next few comics. Such as Haly talking to her inner selves again, debating what their foretold fate ment.

If I were Roy, I'd be concerned about Durkon. Durkon is laughing that he's
been spared a cruel fate by by joining friends and family in death, rather than in life? Also that he'll never achieve anything in the mission to teach
about humans he believes he's assigned to.

To me, it looks like he's in denial.

When the drawings on a page change from mere joke/plot devices to characters that can evoke a real emotional response beyond just laughter, then the creator is doing something right.

There is something amazingly right about this whole series.

Edit: Ok I was so stunned at how badly the gate question was handled that I forgot they were going to head back to Azure City to "mooch a Teleport" to get to the right gate. Duh on me...

Eh. I get the feeling that he had completely given up on being allowed to return home. And remember that his question was "finally", so that says absolutely nothing about when he next gets to go home. So he may very well visit home on more than a few occasions before his final return. (Unfortunately, we know that's a bad thing. :-/ )

Aaaawwwwwwwww. Score one for multiculturalism, one for V's oracle ("I fail to see what difference it makes"? ;D ;D ;D), one for Elan's mommy, and a couple more for Roy's big heart. He acts all tough, but he really cares about his team.

Meant to post about the previous comic -- even though Haley can't join in the conversation, I notice she's leading the party. This makes the little 'Haley Rules!' imp in my head very happy indeed.

And they're off to Azure City, where the plot will advance, and all manner of things will go down. Great work, Giant!

The Oracle, of course, was a chicken. Awk!

"Because it doesn't mean 'after something funny' ".

Y'know, it does sort of look like it should have something to do with humor, doesn't it? But then, "passed on" always makes me think of the dead farting. Maybe that's how souls escape: when the muscles relax, the body gives up the ghost through the back door...along with something a bit more--ahem--solid.... :-[

I guess to dwarves one's remains being interred in the family mausoleum is a high honor. It's like our Arlington, or Forest Lawn. Beats being incinerated by some unspeakable magic or dissolving in some beast's guts, I wot....

Now, as for Thor's shaving cream, has anyone ever known Thor to be clean-shaven without his magestic beard? He might have shaving cream as Durkon says, but the question is, does he ever use the stuff? So many questions... so little time in unreality...

Kudos where it's due Rich. You've been flamed in the last few weeks by DnD fanboys who've been grumbling at the lack of gaming related humour and alleged slow plot speed .

Today, you've produced a strip that is remarkably touching and human (dare I say demi-human!), which I thought would be torched by the miserable masses. A top notch effort to portray such pathos with something as apparently simple as a comic. We care for these guys, and are with them every step. Am very pleasantly surprised that it has elicited the strongest positive response on these boards for weeks. This strip is proof of why I'm an OOTSer regardless of perceived lack of humour/speed/whatever. Rich is an artist and a storyteller - the sum is worth more than all its parts.

A big 4 thumbs up (am borrowing my girlfriend's thumbs without her permission) 8)

Aw!

Hugs for Durkon!

(Literary commentary to follow- )

And might I say that this is evidence, yet again, that The Giant knows what he is doing, as a writer? Really really knows what he is doing.

There were a lot of posts two comics ago feeling sorry for the strange furry little man. But remember, folks- writers always hurt the characters they love the most, the most. See, it's from the pain that the true growth comes, and the writers want to see their characters become all they can.

Sometimes they hurt them a LOT.

But then, of course, writers also always have characters do the thing you least expect. But when it happens, it makes perfect sense, for that character.

Hats off, Rich. Really nice work.

Very touching. I liked it a lot.

And once again - a self fullfilling prophecy. Wondered if the Oracle would make one of those. Because, if it hadn't foretold that Durkon would return home when he is dead, Roy wouldn't have understood how important this was to Durkon - and he probably wouldn't have felt obliged to bring Durkon's Body home after his death. Hope I didn't confuse anyone by now... :)

Edit: and while I loved the strip for many of the reasons already mentioned, I think the comments about the last frame are completely bogus.

For starters, Again great comic Giant. Loved the V comment about gender not being significant. Wonder what fuel that will add to the V gender debate.

To all those that think the last panel is something, get a life. If you are seeing something there, then that says something about yourself. If durkon was kneeling, then I might start thinking the Giant was taking us somewhere very weird. Durkon and Roy are good freinds and have been through lots together. Nothing wrong with a hug durung an emotional moment.

For all those "W00t I'm on page whatever" posts. Please get a life. We know what page you are on, its highlighted at the top AND the botton of the page.

I understand what you are saying, and you may have a point.

[Spoiler having to do with OtOPCs]

Durkon's corpse returning to his homeland will cause much destruction because he will be in the gut of a monster. This carnivorous tree will eventually be slain by the combined effort of the dwarves. At which point Durkon will be burried with his ancestors.

Well that's what I think, based on all the foreshadowing.

I know, I'm dating one. ;) And the comic was awesome - it's great to see Durkon get singled out every once in a while, he's such a good character. Brings the group together a lot of the time, I think.

Hmmm, I assumed that was a reference to Tiresias, from the myth/play Oedipus Rex. But the Tiresias character has spawned a billion knock-offs over the past 2400 years, so it also could be a reference to any one of those.

There's not many "all those" comments you mention. Just a few, really. We're on teh intarnetz, we're lucky we haven't been inundated with comments like that. Maybe they were joking, anyway.

And the "first page" thing is a long standing tradition around here. It's a bit impolite to ask people to change their posting habits to suit you, and to insult people with the "get a life" stuff. JM2C.

I agree. The first page stuff is stupid. Very stupid, and tiresome, especially when we all know that there's nothing inherently special about being the fourth person to post on the third page. However, it's some kind of religion around here and nothing short of a declaration from the Giant himself would stop it.

Tiresias was blind, but I don't think that he wore a blindfold.

And might I say that this is evidence, yet again, that The Giant knows what he is doing, as a writer? Really really knows what he is doing.

It is, isn't it?

well, I do agree that the first page stuff is a little dumb, but the people in the forum have probably been doing that since the comic first started.

As for the "get a life" part, leatherman, I think you shouldnt be talking, because if you do have more of a life than everyone in the forum, then you wouldn't even be posting here, and you wouldn't write /rant at the end of your rant. God, you should seriously get a life! ;)

Excuse me. There is no contradiction between loving OOTS and having a life. It's people who think there is such a contradiction, and so criticise others for giving a little time of their day to nourishment of the soul, who really need to think about their life.

Yeah, the fact that so many people are scripted to die does not bode well

Well, we don't really know that, say, Belkar's going to die. The oracle wasn't really speaking ex cathedra when he/she said that, so it might have been more a kobold/halfling thing (or a person-forced-to-spend-time-with-Belkar/Belkar thing) than an oracular thing.

Well, I suppose we do more or less know that Belkar's going to die, unless Rick decides to (shudder) give him divine rank. But we don't know he's going to die during the story arc.

For that matter, we don't even know that Durkon's going to die during the story arc; the Oracle might have been talking about 50 years in the future.

listen fool, such things happen all the time for example COKE is an ordinary word but it is owned by someone. however if you ask nicely you can receive written permission from yours truly to use AWESOME in certain situations, and as I have already stated (though not to YOUR knowledge) that my copyright of AWESOME is in fact, AWESOME, then such a use can be acceptable

Contrary to some, I have absolutely no problem with people expressig their delight on being in the first page. It's damn hard to get there, since it only lasts for a few minutes twice a week and takes a little luck and perseverance, so when you see your post there it must feel like a small (very small, almost infinitesimal) victory of sorts.

Fact of the matter is, if you want to jump to "content", just skip the first page.

Actually, no one could own a copyright on the work Coke, the word Coca-Cola or any other brand name. Some companies do own trademarks that are ordinary words, but trademarks merely prevent the use of the term as a source identifier for a similar or related product. The question is, is it possible establish the "AWESOME label" as a service or trade mark serving as a source identifier for your posts and commentary? That would be AWESOME.

please to forgive, the differential in various english words is not the place where I show strength.

I see that you are correct and that my use of copyright was illegal and punishable. I was put into enrage as after reading the person's words the only dynamic conclusion available was that their use of AWESOME was not habitual in the past and done only to provoke my enraged.

however I will state that any discussions of my trademark will have my future permission to use AWESOME in a positive fashion. This is to mean that you can say it is AWESOME but to deny that it is AWESOME would be in penalty.

Actually, No one owns trademarks. Use of the words 'own' or 'property' with regard to trademarks, copyrights or patents is a conspiricy of the borgeois proletariat to increase their power.

Trademarks, copyrights and patents are worlds apart from property rights in law. Just as they are very different from each other.

I attempt to use large words in my English to impress the speakers with my hold of their home tongue. But not to be fooled, I am easily confused. I am of the impression that some of the words which you have used are not English because they are not in my dictionary.

You are saying my trademark is most likely in false claim?

Hmmm, maybe my grasp of my native English isn't as good as I thought. Isn't "bourgeois proletariat" a contradiction in terms?

Bourgeois = a powerful caste whose wealth was gained through commercial activities such as trade and manufacturing as opposed to inheritance.

Proletariat = the lower or working class.

The bourgeoisie are the people who pay the wages of the proletariat. Unless I've somehow got this wrong.

Not that this has anything to do with the comic any more...

Pretty much, yes.

You can't copyright words, and then prevent people from saying them (well, licensed songs and such) - but you can copyright products, ideas, that sort of thing. Let's take a comic-related joke, to keep this thread on topic:

Mind Flayer. Yes, I said it. The Mind Flayer is a creature created and copyrighted by WotC, the "spooooooky wizard". I can't sell anything featuring a Mind Flayer, share details on the stats or abilities of a Mind Flayer, or create my own tentacle-headed, brain-eating purple-pink monster that's exactly the same as a Mind Flayer and sell that, BECAUSE the Mind Flayer is a copyrighted, patented concept and idea, and a trademark. However, the words "Mind Flayer" themselves are not copyrighted - and they can't be. I can say (or type) "Mind Flayer" all day long (though that might become spamming, if that's all I do), without any reprisal, since language isn't private property.*

Basically, trying to claim that you own a word, such as AWESOME, will just get people mocking or making fun of you and your claim - like I did. Not aiming to enrage, but definitely mocking.

*Note: None of the above is based on an actual study of copyright law, just what I know about it.

Oh yeah:
Mind Flayer. :D

EDIT: And aren't both "borguois" and "proletariat" French words? Or maybe Russian?

I disagree, as they share a number of characteristics of other personal property, but I don't want my first venture into the Comics forum to be a IP law threadjack, so let's agree to disagree.

The_Glyphstone: Nice summary. If I were inclines to nitpick, I would say that the actual description and any images are is copyrighted, as opposed to the concept. The actual effect is exactly as you describe, however.

Chibibar: Try? Apparently, they succeeded.

As I recall, they also tried to shut down City of Heroes because the character creation system could be used to recreate their copyrighted works. No wonder people are skeptical about IP law. Anyway, I am ending my part in this threadjack now.

Update: The links won't work, but you can search "Super Heroes" on the USPTO cite to find the two live registrations that I listed above.
