Essentially can a PC use an action to perform a bonus action?

I am sure there are other possibilities but an example which came up is can my Bard us an action to cast Healing Word and her bonus action to keep Heat Metal going?

Healing Word wouldn't break concentration on Heat Metal, you'd just be unable to use it that turn since you used your Bonus action on something else.

No. Cantrip + Healing Word should work, you would just miss out on heat metal damage for that turn.
