It's a 'test of the heart'. In the recent strips, V has demonstrated that he/she would rather run away then face combat without spells. Could it be she/he was worried that a 'test of the heart' as described in the cliche'd way could reveal that he/she was, um... lacking?

Everyone would be worried in those circumstances. Durkon and Belkar are less so, because Belkar is proud of his evil deeds and Durkon is a cleric, so he's at peace with them. Elan is just stupid. Haley and V, particularly Haley, are a bit more embarassed.

Since OotS characters make their own assumptions about V's gender, I don't see why we can't. It's better than having to read "he or she" a billion times and plus it's always interesting to see how each person interprets V in his or her own manner. ;)
