Phanaton monkey like creature or flying squirrel ?

Hey fellow gamers i have looked up this race cause i am playing a bard/swashbuckler mindbender/shadowdancer for my dm's gestalt campaign since my last character is recovering from for 15 months lol i did something lawful stupid to save the party so yeah no longer undead with that character. trying to figure out if a phanaton is a flying squirrel like the Dm says or this monkey/raccoon creature with wing flaps ?

They are gliding raccoon/monkeys. The flying squirrel PC race, is the ratatosk from Expedition to the Demonweb Pits. The Phanaton is statted for 3.5 in Dragon Magazine 339 (Jan 2006)
