So ... do Golems, as they count as magic items, qualify for being (created as) intelligent items and if so, which options amomg those available for intelligent/epic intelligent items wouldn't properly work for them?

Technically, probably, but it's not exactly a crystal clear area of the rules.

Would most likely get banned by Paizo if they ever paid attention to it.

Will definitely be a case of your mileage varying heavily based upon the particular GM.

Sources for the bolded? I'm pretty sure golems are creatures, not magic items, despite being crafted similarly.

It's vice versa. Both golems and intelligent magic items are considered constructs.


Intelligent items can actually be considered creatures because they have Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Treat them as constructs (see page 307 of the Monster Manual).
Golem is one type of constructs, magic item is the other (there are also Inevitables, Retrievers, etc.).
