Looking for good tokens to use with a Battlemat...

Could somebody lead me to usable tokens for grid battlemats? I got a few characters that I don't quite think a miniature can truly picture...

Paper cutouts with a cork base can work. You'd be able to customize them to your heart's content.

Hero Forge is a very nice place for custom miniatures, though the high quality ones can be a bit expensive.

I think they meant that they have characters they don't think they can find appropriate minis for, not that they don't like minis at all.

My first half orc barbarian mini was labled hill giant . It was standard one inch / medium lead , meant for those insane small half inch miniatures sets

There is mini for everything and with a little imagination it can be anything . All shapes, sizes and prices.

It'll be a matter of finding good ones with an exact design for a resonable price. It's much easier and faster to use a piece of paper glued to a cork. You could even take the time to find a nice mini while you use the corks for your games.

But for standard enemies and environments such as plants and buildings? Those should be easily found at nice prices, and worth the money.

I'm a fan of using things like coins, one-inch bathroom tiles, or a sheet of whiteboard cut into one-inch squares-- they're easy to manipulate and can be easily reused by drawing on them with wet/dry erase markers. Great if you're a lazy GM like me who doesn't prep far enough in advance to make custom figurines.

If you want to get a little fancier, I saw a fun article a little while ago that suggested using Shrinky Dinks (http://makezine.com/2009/06/26/how-to-shrinky-dink-gaming-minis/)-- you find a picture, print it out on a sheet of the shrink-paper, bake them and stick 'em in a binder clip to hold them upright. They looked pretty neat in the pictures.

Lego minifigures on a 2x3 flat brick also work pretty well.

Overall, though, I don't suggest stressing too much about it. My preference is actually for crude whiteboard maps and dry-erase tokens; that sort of thing is quick to set up, can be easily customized, and doesn't lead to awkward situations where you have to say "okay, we're going to pretend that the troll is a beholder, and these skeletons are orcs, and this castle over here is actually a crude wood fort..."

i am very much into the props and battlefield design part of this game. You say "find the exact design for so and so " but for me its the other way around . I first sit down with my minis and toys and "props" trying make something awesome and then I make the DND story from that or get the players to that point to set up that pretty decoration idea .

So technically I do indeed have the exact design because thats where I started from .
