So, imagine you have a sylph (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-sylph) wind listener (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-sylph/wind-listener-wizard-sylph) wizard (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard) in your party. They have the anxious (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/drawbacks/anxious/) drawback and, even though they are a universalist (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-schools/paizo-arcane-schools/classic-arcane-schools/universalist/) arcane crafter (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-schools/paizo-arcane-schools/classic-arcane-schools/universalist/arcane-crafter/), they specialize in casting divination spells and other inoffensive magic.

You and your party are now face to face with the BBEG who is monologueing about this and that, and your wizard is nervously cowering in the back. As things are about to turn for the worst, you demand your wizard do SOMETHING to help, and with a anxious "Oh, okay... um..." the BBEG's head explodes in a shower of skull fragments and brain matter that horribly injures his underlings. The entire party turns to look gobsmacked at the unphased wizard who is looking around for party approval.

"Well, you said to do something... was, was that okay?"

The wizard just used explode head (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/e/explode-head/).

I am trying to figure out what are the most unexpected spells (more than likely save or suck/die, but not necessarily) an otherwise meek and non-confrontational wizard could bust out to surprise allies and opponents alike. I am looking specifically for arcane spells of 1st through 9th level available to wizards. However, if you have any other spells that you find unexpected for a different class or just plain amusing, feel free to share them here.

Some I have found (aside from explode head):

1st-level: snowball (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/snowball), sculpt corpse (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/sculpt-corpse)
2nd-level: create treasure map (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/c/create-treasure-map), spontaneous immolation (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/spontaneous-immolation)
3rd- level: final sacrifice (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/f/final-sacrifice), swarm of fangs (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/swarm-of-fangs)
4th-level: conjure deadfall (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/c/conjure-deadfall), terrible remorse (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/t/terrible-remorse)
5th-level: decollate (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/d/decollate), slough (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/slough)
6th-level: flesh wall (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/f/flesh-wall), hellfire ray (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/h/hellfire-ray)
7th-level: epidemic (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/e/epidemic), hungry darkness (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/h/hungry-darkness)
8th-level: death clutch (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/d/death-clutch), life of crime (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/l/life-of-crime)
9th-level: imprisonment (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/i/imprisonment), massacre (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/m/massacre)

Looking through the ones I found, a number of them are evil. I suppose evil spells would be a surprise, but I am more interested in non-evil spells.

Are you just looking for spells with a dramatic effect somewhere? Actual SoDs are rare in PF - they tend to just be non-evocation blasting spells that require a Resurrection if they bring the target to zero. When they do have an instakill mechanic, it tends to be sharply limited, like this one which only gibs a target who has far less HP than a 12th-level party's BBEG should.

The problem with unexpected damage spells is that they tend to be inferior to the standard spells. For example, spont immolation is simply a weaker version of Scorching Ray, and conjure deadfall of Fireball. So I'd suggest going with unexpected utility spells instead.

For example, (1) Windy Escape, Endothermic Touch; (2) Shatter, Pilfering Hand; (3) Steal Size, Suggestion; (4) Resilient Sphere, Blast Barrier.

(4) Resilient Sphere, Blast Barrier.

Emergency Force Sphere would be pretty unexpected too

I've always found that Whirlwind of Teeth gets a few slack jaws, if you can get it past your DM; a screaming tornado of rending mouths and fangs covering half a football field will do that, I guess:smalleek:.
