The Regatta of the Grasping Isles
Please Embrace the Anachronism- have scenes where-ever and with whomever you wish

Navies, regents, and persons possessing their own fleets are all invited to the Grasping Isles to celebrate all things nautical. The Academia dea Escarpa Aca, commonly just called the Escarpa, will host the event. Domitories and lecture halls have been set aside for visiting delegations. Sections of the gardens have been reserved for those who wish to set up their own pavilions. Docking space around the Escarpa is limited, but the massive docks across the bay at the city of Porão are just a short barcito ride away.

Each ship captain is met by a small greeting party and given a beautifully inlayed, waterproof, oilskin bag with maps and flyers for various events. A Ilhéuso visefea embroidered with the dates of the Regatta are provided as well. Regents are greeted by leaders of the various Gildes, selected to meet the regent’s philosophical and educational bent. He or she receives a similar bag and hat, but are more ornate with gems and precious metal filigree. Inside are also private letters and entreaties to visit and dine with various Gilde leaders. Hosting a regent in their manors is seen as a high honor.

The Fundo Rei himself has more or less taken over the garden amphitheater as his own. The central stage was transformed into a reception lounge for the various leaders. Small pavilions were evenly spaced throughout, with a sampling of foods, artisans of note, and special items available for purchase.

The plant artisans had been hard at work, carving the topiary gardens and labyrinths for display. And everywhere is the vibrant green wolboom fabric being used- from tents and awnings, sling-chairs and hammocks to the delicate lace window coverings and screens.

Discussion events

The Gilde Pecuaria will be hosting a lecture series and discussion group on the proper materials selection and preparation for ocean going and fresh-water ships.

The Gilde Traficante will be hosting a lecture series and discussion group on the linguistic similarities brought on by shipping, and the historical implications of such findings. Particular focus will be on shared mythology and folklore

The Gilde Guerreiro will be hosting a lecture series and discussion group on sea-lane law and anti-piracy. Lecture will include simulated craft boarding and seizure exercises. Participants will be required to sign a waiver in case of injury.

The Gilde Carregador will be hosting a lecture series and discussion group on harbor development and maintenance. Discussions will include in-water review. Please plan on getting very wet. Weather forecasts will be available for proper clothing planning.

The Gilde Fiandeiro will be hosting weaving and sail-making expositions. Special topics include the recent innovations of sewn-timber constructions and the implications on fabric making.

Participation Events

Parade of Ships: Kickoff event of ships sailing by main docks in Escarpa. A free feast will be provided in the central ampitheater for all participants. Pavilions have been reserved for each regent. The Grasping Isles flagship, the Sabedoria Cochero will lead the parade.

Provisioning race: A one-day event along the docks of the Porão. Test your shipping, provisioning, and trading acumen buying and selling specialized goods at 12 trading posts. Both barter and trading skills will be tested. The winner will be the one with the greatest overall profit at the end of the 6 hour event.

Night sailing. This is not an event for spectators, but for the most skilled ocean vessels. The ships will leave at dusk and sail out into the open Abismo Triste. Relying only on their instruments and the stars, they must find a boat moored out in the sea. The boat will be towing a burning barge as a signal. Turning around it, the vessel must then sail back. The event will be held on the first clear night after the Parade of Ships.

The Mar Barboleta rally The Mar Barboleta (Butterfly Sea) and the Abismo Triste (Sorrowful Abyss) meet around the isles. This makes the sea lanes a difficult passage afflicted by tides and contrary winds. This four-stage race will test the cunning and resolve of the ships and their crews. The race is expected to take twenty four hours in four 6-hour stages. The winner of each stage determines the start order of the next stage.

Exotic boat competition . This is an event solely for fun. The docks of the Escarpa will be the location for a flotilla of the oddest rafts and dinghies ever built. Everyone is allowed to enter a raft or boat that meets the size specifications. The only rule is that the boat could not be made of wood. Prizes awarded for longest float and strangest design. Spectators will be provided with balls of colored chalk to throw at the participants.

Farewell Event: The Final event will see one ship from each delegation docked at the main docks, decorated and looking their best. Groups of revelers will be circulating, singing songs and providing refreshments. It is the chance for the visitors to show off their homes on the waves.

The Escarpa is a modestly sized, fortified island in the bay of Porão, on the island of Pancada Prinicpal.. For centuries, it stood as a lighthouse and watch-tower to the entrance to the bay. But over the last twenty years, the island was fortified and many buildings added. It now houses the military and naval academy for the islands. Numerous dormitories, classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls, and union buildings are scattered about the elegantly landscaped lawns and pair of small, freshwater lakes.

Kalus Mensus, head of the House of Mensus, sometime diplomat, and King of Caligonia, looked over the bustling port, where his fleet of ships had sailed. The regatta, which had been many years in preparation, seemed to be already beginning to pick up to full swing, judging from the hive of activity. His own personal escort consisted of a royal Junk, recently refitted with better planking, the silver Calis boat, from his coronation, and a number of caravels, and newly designed ships based on Skrilling designs, all willing to take part in events. Besides that, a number of the noble houses had sent their own small delegations, probably to attempt to treat with the Gildes on their own terms. Even von Mann had sent a ship attempting to sell wares.

To Kalus though, for all the joviality and friendship on offer, he still felt on edge. He was a veteran of numerous conferences, and knew that it would eventually turn to politics, rival houses, boasting, and of course,to the south. Because of that, he took his time, wandering a short while around the beautiful gardens to settle himself. Soon enough though, he turned and made his way to the center of the gardens, to the reception, with his guards dutifully following behind.

Meanwhile

Hiula Regef, favored heir to the throne, merrily wondered where the King had gone. She had already gotten into the swing of proceedings, sampling the many exotic foods, and talking to all those who were brave enough to approach her. She didn't have her lamassu with her, although that would certainly have made things far more entertaining. As part of the official Caligonian delegation, she was dressed in a blue robe, with strand of long, fair hair sticking out of her head wrap, much to her nearby guard's chagrin. Either way, she was hear to gain some political connections, for both the realm and her house, and attend a few lectures, to help coordinate future colonists, though arguably Caligonian colonial activities had been far more successful.

Caligonia will be attending:

Discussion: various, but mostly piracy.

Participation:
Parade: Silver ship will take part.

Provisioning racing: A caravel named Sandsea headed by a Calis will be taking part:3d8+10+1+1

Night sailing: A experimental sewn-plank ship named Orarto will compete, headed by a Ligian: 3d8+1.5+2.5+1+1

Mar Bobeleta: a crew in a Junk will attempt to win in The Septim: 6d8+1.5+2.5

Exotic boat: A very experimental boat made from woven grain treated with a varnish. It might float? It is of course named the Bounty. 2d8+3 for both.

Mi'Vara

Khan Vvtkian Xalo's aging visage still bore the marks of his captivity. Pink lateral scars marred the right side of his face from temple to ear, a lingering remnant of the torture he endured before the Sheolim agents hired by his son had freed him. In spite of this hardship, the Khan's return had been a triumph as he united his clans beneath his banner in peaceful unity for the first time in generations unknown. Despite his new prestige, the Khan's demeanor and dress remained unchanged. He still wore the simple kilt woven with the colors of his homeland and a finely woven shirt that was undyed and unadorned. A dull silver circlet that decorated his dark, shoulder length hair was the only sign of his station.

With him traveled his friends that formed the delegation from Emeraldvale. Vvtkian greeted the Gildes master which greeted him and made his way to greet the Fundo Rei in the garden amphitheater. He took in the care in which the gardens were tended, it was vastly different from anything in Mi'Vara. His people preferred to let the greenspaces grow wild, though he could feel the soothing effects of the tended space on his soul and foretold a time when Mi'Vara might turn to economics and gardening in an effort to garner respect from the broader world. Perhaps even in his son's time it would happen. He could only pray that reliance on such luxuries would not make him weak.

"Fundo Rei, as Khan Vvtkian Xalo of the united people of Mi'Vara, I bring greetings and gratitude for your invitation to your Regatta." His words were accompanied by a deep nod as a display of respect for the foreign ruler.

Bërdo Seaspray stepped out of his cabin as the Kingdom's fleet sailed into harbor. Early as they were, others had been earlier still, for he could see the telltale signs of celebration all around. His ship, the Peregrine, led the fleet, followed by a number of both Caravels and Junks, and two other, very special ships - each from one of the Kingdom's colonies. His old friend Mæri Kovo captained the Flame of Celestia, bearing among its passengers a Zaldian delegation from Tenplu Urdina; The other craft came from Hono Moku, crewed by Īlo Hae sailors and captained by their chieftain Malie Iman. It was the first time any major delegations from the colonies had come to Celessa, and Bërdo knew that their appearance at the Regatta probably wasn't coincidental.

He and Mæri entered the Escarpa gardens together, at first staying mostly to themselves. Most of the others, including the Zaldians and Īlo Hae, followed them, content for now to take in the natural beauty of the place. Soon enough, however, they had found their way to the amphitheater, to greet first the Fundo Rei and then the other diplomats.

Neveran will participate in all events except the Exotic Boat Competition.

Parade: The Peregrine, captained by Bërdo Seaspray of Neveran.

Provisioning race: The Flame of Celestia, captained by Mæri Kovo of the UPYP.

Allanar

Lachiel arrived at the Grasping Isles in the newly built flagship of her fleet, the Shaenaur. The Queen traveled with a larger delegation than normal, the beauty of the Isles and pleasant climate caused many of her Court to beg attendance and so they arrived at Escarpa en masse, as Lachiel had been in a particularly benevolent mood and allowed all who wished to travel with her. The mood around the elven party was much more jovial than usual in result, though Lachiel and the Lightstalker maintain their standard dignified air. Though the elven men preferred the dark worn-in leathers of their military dress, the women all favoured bright and airy garments that complimented their height and slim physiques. With the elves were two young seemingly human women of dark hair, though they were dressed in the elven style.

With such a large delegation, the Lightstalker was spared of acting as the Queen's herald and the party was announced by the Queen's own niece.

"Queen Lachiel, of the Elven Kingdom of Allanar." Her presentation lacked panache, though her voice was clear and pleasant enough.

King Ramsay (http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Lancelot-2-ioan-gruffudd-216178_1400_941.jpg) had never met other world leaders before. Of course, they had never met him and it would do them little good to have met his predecessor for the Corsyddi delegation that arrived in Escarpa was not the Corsyddi delegation of Exarch Dawydd Terfal but the delegation of King Ramsay the First. Gone were the great red banners that had marked the Exarch's rule, in their place a purple and yellow banner that signified the royal yacht and many multicolored flags including small Baalbeki and Neverese pendants which flew upon the other ships now arriving. The Corsyddi had been known for their fine ship craft in the years preceding the Skrilling invasion and it seemed the royal entourage wished to rekindle this belief abroad. Luxuriously large flag ships emblazoned with decoration and mock weaponry were flanked by smaller more agile craft whose profile and handling upon the water suggested well made vessels.

Despite the great showing however the delegation, at least those officially capable of representing the Corsyddi, was relatively slim. The bulk of the guests were sailors and soldiers of the King's remaining guard from Advandia, the bulk having gone north with the remnant Red Army to fight the Skrillings. It had been no mistake that the most contentious Advandians agitating for Ramsay to conquer Advandia and the still under suspicion rump of the Red Army had been sent away from the island. All that remained was the Island Guard who were overseeing rebuilding in the King's absence, and his vanguard from Advandia who traveled with him now. These men had fought alongside their young king and shown great loyalty to his cause and purpose. It was also no mistake they were being brought along on a diplomatic trip to a friendly tropical island chain. It was this method of decision making that engendered the king much loyalty.

The king was dressed in simple but well made leathers and if not for the circlet of iron upon his brow might be mistaken for another among the ship's crew. More obviously delegatory was the Laskist priest Gavin Hywel, an older balding gentleman dressed in black vestments of very fine make and carrying a very finely made but well-worn binding of Laska's writings and those of other prominent Shishiyans. His eyes seemed to hunger for conversation as he stared out at the approaching shoreline. The other prominently dressed guest upon the yacht was Jennifer Madlen, a middle aged woman dressed in a sharply cut, even imposing blue dress. She had been a former member of the Terfal regime, a clerk for the upper echelons of Terfal's inner circle with an excellent memory for conversations and numbers. When attacks had been made upon Terfal's inner circle the lieutenants had been killed but people like Jennifer survived and when the offer came to help the royal government make sense of the previous regime's actions she had filled the role. She was not the easiest person to talk to but Ramsay trusted her and like his men from Advandia he had brought her in the hopes a vacation might help relax her.

When Ramsay had heard the Gilde Guerreiro would be hosting a lecture series on anti-piracy that would include "simulated craft boarding and seizure exercises" he had not been able to sign up quick enough. The young king was well trained as a warrior and a competent seaman but he had yet to attempt combining the two. His conquests upon the continent had been land battles and crossing the strait to Corsyddi had been no battle at all thanks to the Skrillings. He was hoping he might improve his abilities and if he happened to meet someone interesting while attempting it all the better.

By the time Ramsay saw the banners of Neveran he had already lost Gavin to the crowds. He thus walked only with Jennifer as he approached the Neverse delegation. Ramsay tried to identify the man in charge, seeing no crown among the delegate to pick from he simply announced himself.

"King Ramsay to see the Neverse ambassador," he smiled as he spoke, sparing a glance to see Jennifer stone faced beside him.

Retired Prince Idritis Stone, his wife Ruby Stone, and 2 members of the Emeraldvale Royal guard arrived on the Mi'Varan boat, lacking a navy of their own. Idritis thanked the Khan warmly for their passage before disembarking.

Prince Idritis, at 73 years of age, wears a simple traveling tunic, and walks with the assistance of a cane topped with a enormous, cloudy Emerald cast into the shape of a sphere.

He is accompanied by his wife Ruby, who was until recently the Principality's chief judge. She wears a slightly more formal gown than that of her husband, with a small emerald-studded tiara on her head.

Their trade tongue includes the slang and linguistic shortcuts of a fluent speaker. Emeraldvale, being a land of migrants, requires a thorough mastery of the language of universal exchange.

After chatting with the guildsmen, the pair sets off agonizingly slowly towards the amphitheater, stopping in many places to examine the construction and fortifications on the island. This drives their guards batty, but Idritis and Ruby keep contentedly puttering along as though they don't notice.

In the amphitheatre, Idritis Stone presents the Fundo Rei with a bottle of top-brand heartwine.
"I'm quite pleased to meet you. I'm afraid that my daughter the Princess is tied up preparing to go to war, so you'll have to meet her old man instead. Please, call me Idritis. She instructed me not to come without a gift, and that posed quite the problem. What to bring for a man who lives in one of the most important trading hubs in Celessa, eh? I did, at last, manage to find something you might not have tried before. This is a bottle of heartwine from Aneran. It's quite good, I can assure you, our biggest seller down at the tavern.1 In fact-"

Ruby Stone nudges him sharply with her elbow, and whispers something to him.

"Yes, yes, of course, I wasn't going to forget, and if you're so worried about my aging mind perhaps you could show a little more concern for my brittle elderly ribs, eh?" He snaps back.

"Sorry about that," he apologizes, with a pointed look at his wife. "My daughter was quite interested in this system of exchanges you created. At home we tend to use Emeralds as a common currency, but that tends to be very impractical for cheap items or services, and the amount of Emerald dust2 that needs to be exchanged, for, say, a haircut, is a rather gray area. Thus, I must humbly ask you for a copy of your book of exchange rates. I've also been instructed that in exchange for the book, we are to provide you with the secrets of making riveted mithril mail, *he pauses for breath and waves a scroll around* with the added stipulation that you refrain from interfering with Emeraldvale's mithril interests."

1. The Wheezing Weasel is a government owned and operated tavern in Emeraldvale. 2. Emerald dust was once worthless, as it couldn't be used in jewelry, but with the invention of Alkahest and the Hans-Quickfinger process it became a valuable commodity, since it could then be made into larger Emeralds fit for jewelry work.

Mæri smiled and nodded as she was introduced. "It's good to meet you, King Ramsay and companions. What did you want to speak about?"

"I did not have a specific subject in mind, or perhaps I should say I have too many. You have brought up two of them: the Skrilling War and the shadow creature of Gobsfull. The Nevite kingdom has always been a good ally to the Corsyddi people," his phrasing carefully framed the relationship to obfuscate the change in Corsyddi government, "It would be my pleasure to know what the Nevite Queen plans to do regarding both these matters. Much of my efforts look to focus upon my kingdom and her people but I am not blind to my neighbors' plights nor shall I be known to turn away a friend who asks for help."

As they spoke Jennifer loomed like a living shadow a pace behind having neither been introduced nor choosing to introduce herself.

Bërdo Seaspray shook the offered hand, then turned to walk alongside the king. "I can answer the first point definitely. The Queen has sent the First Highland Platoon to join the Bearmen's soldiers, commanded by Colwynn Vaughn. As to the second...."

The captain trailed off into silence. After a moment, Mæri interjected quietly. "I do not know if the Queen has any plans. It is possible that she may send an investigation to find its source, or possibly soldiers to help fight it... but I am not certain."

"I myself do not think Queen Dasha has a particular plan. It's rather difficult to determine what to do about a giant, goblin-eating monster from the Enemy itself, although if you have any sort of idea, it would be good to hear it. I think that you can count on Nevite support if you have a plan to fight the creature."

Though among the distinctive Xin Kun ships was one bearing the distinctive Dragon crest of the Imperial Family, the one who stepped ashore was not the Emperor but the Crown Princess Mei in the traditional attire of Mori Xima. Her floor length brown silk robe with long bell sleeves was covered in intricate pale patterns and tied at the waist with a cloth belt which tied at the back under a decorative attachment. As was perhaps more appropriate for the more northern of the central islands of Xin Kun than the venue*, she carried a plain dark sleeveless overcoat with silver embroidery across the back and shoulders. Her green and silver hair was partially tied in a bun and decorated with many beads, ribbons and flowers, the rest flowing to her waist. Accompanying the Crown Princess was the newly crowned King of Ka Xin Xuu who wore a relatively simple loose cotton robe and trousers which looked much like a skirt when he stood still and their various Xin Len attendants.

As the Regatta’s events continued, Gustavo found himself more and more taken by Huila’s appearance and personality. He led a vast trading empire, dealing with nobles and leaders on a daily basis. But he couldn’t bring himself to strike up a conversation with the woman. Silently, he cursed his timidity, blaming his overbearing mother. Still, he found himself loitering in her presence.

"Fundo Rei, as Khan Vvtkian Xalo of the united people of Mi'Vara, I bring greetings and gratitude for your invitation to your Regatta." His words were accompanied by a deep nod as a display of respect for the foreign ruler.

The Fundo Rei greeted the pair warmly. “Welcome! You have travelled far to come to our event. You honor us. I hope you find the event worthy of the journey.”
Speaking less formally, “I can’t wait to see the Peregrine and the Flame of Celestia. I saw them as they sailed into the harbor. They look so wondrous!” For a moment, he seemed more youth than mid-thirties king.

"Queen Lachiel, of the Elven Kingdom of Allanar." Her presentation lacked panache, though her voice was clear and pleasant enough.

Gustavo made a slow, formal bow. “Noble Queen Lachiel. Our thanks for attending. You honor us. Our sailors and merchants speak highly of your growing, bountiful lands along the coast of the Butterfly Sea. I have, perhaps, been remiss in according your lands the engagement you deserve. My hope is that this can be the start of a renewed, vigorous friendship.”

“Thank you for the Aneran Heartwine. It is a great prize here in the islands. Few orders that make it hear always seem short a bottle or two. Even most scrupulous fall to its charms. For a land that prides itself on being honest and forthright, this is a serious admission, the king knew.
“I am more than willing to accept your proposal. The technical knowledge around mithril forgring and bending is of great value. We may never acquire a source of mithril to use it large scale, but the experimental benefits will be seen here at the Escarpa for decades.
But you must understand that the Currency Exchange is more than just a book. It is the agreement to create a living exchange, where the Ilhueso keep track of the cost of various items in both local and our own currency. That way, it becomes easier to determine, for instance, how much your emerald dust is the equivalent to a Dragonborn Diram. Also, you gain the GRI’s backing of those rates in exchange for accepting our currency as valid. It is designed to enable fair trade for everyone who uses it.”

The lecture series was held under a pavillion tent on a wide dock on one of the freshwater lakes on the island. Informed early that no deference would be given- regent noble, captain and sailor all would be doing the same things.
The first was a swimming test and lecture. The Islanders were well versed in swimming and floating, and lectured about the care sailors must take. The sea, the explained, was far more deadly than any enemy.
After that came basic practice with the tools of boarding. They got to try throwing grapnels at a small boat, hook them with boarding bardiche, team work with a spiked boarding ramp, and so on. They even got a chance to swing on ropes from an elevated platform. They were cautioned, however. That may look impressive, but it is seldom effective. A few who failed ended up in the water.
Lastly, the group had a thorough discussion on weapons and armor. The speaker was proud of the Islander’s Wolboom cloth gambeson. It was easy to remove if one fell in the water, and provided decent protection from glancing blows and shrapnel.
Then the group divided up into 8 man teams, and selected their padded arms and armor. Small sailboats awaited them, and a game of capture-the-flags began as soon as all boats were on the water.

King Ramsey noted that one of the first boats nearby had the Fundo Rei at the helm

A quiet board room was reserved for the regents of the Southern continent. The Fundo Rei awaited their arrival. With any luck, the group would agree to the status quo, and peace could be maintained. Somehow, however, he doubted it would be that easy.

"It certainly seems that it will be worth the trip," Bërdo replied. "It will be good to have a more relaxing voyage in the Peregrine, though the other ships here look quite ready for the races."

"Some might even pose a slight challenge," Mæri interjected, smiling. "But if you are looking forward to watching our flagships, you've certainly a treat in store."

Hiula, mid way through tasting some kind of green paste (which really needed some salt) realized that the Fundo Rei had been standing near her for quite some time. She might as well introduce herself to her host. Walking carefully to him, she smiled, and curtsied. "It is certainly an honour for you to provide us with this beautiful garden, Fundo Rei. In Caligonia, even a simple garden is hard to find. I am Hiula Regef of Caligonia."
She flipped her hair out of her eye, that had come down when she curtsied, slightly annoyed she didn't listen to her guard about it.

King Kalus arrived in the private room. Compared to the other places Southern treaties had been hashed out, this was far less luxurious compared to the palaces of Gehenna. However, so much had happened since then that focusing on the details themselves was far more important.
"Greetings Fundo Rei," said Kalus, as he walked in. "Let us hope we can come to some sort of agreement in the south. Do you know who is attending, or conversely, is definitely not?"

Kalus found a place to sit, and prepared himself for the third attempt at peace in the south. The first had been successful, the second a political battleground between churches. Hopeful the third would be better.

A simple merchant ship approached the Academia, unexpected on such an occasion, even more unexpected for it flew the standard of the Archpatriarch of Salendera, not an individual expected to be interested in a regatta. Still, it could not be mistaken as the holy man disembarked from the hired vessel. Physically he was unimpressive, a man of six decades and only of average height. His hair was mostly grey with a few strands of brown remaining in his braids. He leaned heavily on a staff of dark wood topped with an ornate silver hexagram from the base of which hung a number of white ribbons. He wore a white robe and a mantle of black silk with a border of silver embroidery. A black broad brimmed hat protected him from the Sun as he looked around at his surroundings. This was the first time he had voyaged across the sea and he hoped that the one he had come to speak with would be here.

Allanar

At a time when Lachiel is available for conversation...

Nikolay approached the Elven Queen and bowed respectfully, or as much as a man of his age could manage.
"Your Majesty, I am Nikolay, Archpatriarch of Salendera and Mahangar of the East and news of recent events in the West have concerned me. I have been lead to believe that the assembly that deposed Naira apparently did so unanimously, forgive me that I find this most unlikely. Further I have heard that you personally called for the assembly. I wish to know what matters concerned you so gravely that you would go to such lengths and further what interests does the realm of Karich have in such matters for them to play so heavy a hand in it? I fear that the independence of the Church in matters of faith has been infringed upon by a pagan lord who has no business interfering in such matters and as near as I can determine you have abetted him in doing so, intentionally or otherwise."
He pauses for a moment as though realising he was on the verge of ranting at a sovereign queen.
"Forgive me Your Majesty, but I feel I must defend the sanctity of the Church and with the Chosen and the Beast at large in the world any division could prove disastrous. Though my authority is within the East, the removal of a serving Mahangar at the apparent instigation of a temporal lord I feel sets a dangerous precedent."

Yet Sheol are holding entrenched positions, and have claimed dominion over the peninsula, and the Khada have declared a campaign against the Dragons. Personally, I fear the Khada-Sheol alliance far more, as the neighbour my lands, yet either alliance could roll any of us over." Kalus paused for a second.

"I would therefore propose that we form our own, non-aligned pact. A pact in the south, that any in it will defend the others. "Perhaps a more specific union is called for, at least among the lesser states. A pact of mutual defense, free trade, and religious proselytizing only with permission."

A sole Dominion ship crests the horizon. It is seemingly a house, complete with glass windows, afloat on a raft, consisting of a single 'story' with walls plated in polished steel sheets and capped by a roof of gold & silver tiles. On each side there is a single ballista mounted on a protruding platform with an abnormally large Dominion tower shield on its front, with a hole for the bolt and to aim from. The whole affair is towed by a merchants ship, purchased to the sole end of ensuring the ship would cross the open ocean unharmed. Probably unknown to any onlookers, this is in fact an actual ship from the Dragonborn Dominions military navy (consisting of about four beached craft in a warehouse), retrofitted to be suitably ostentatious.

The newly titled Emperor Aventine disembarks (from the merchants ship) accompanied by a standard Dominion escort of officers equipped with ceremonial weapons and armor, including the retired Interpreter Julius and the general Hadrius. The host is intrigued and simultaneously made to feel at home by the formidably well defended island and its extensive military infrastructure, as they mention in idle conversation numerous times throughout the event. They are, however, thoroughly confounded by the unnecessarily over-tended greenery, which consumes so much space, when it could be instead used to develop further practical infrastructure, perhaps even a village.

Emperor Aventine, however, leaves his escorts quickly and quietly, to both meet with Sheol diplomats he was informed had departed to this island, and to meet the Fundo Rei in the amphitheater. He storms the amphitheater first, speaking loudly at his host even as he crosses the stage to meet him, and his mannerisms suggest exasperation built up immensely over a lengthy stay on the seas. "As far as the coal mines to which you refer, allowing a precious resource to lay fallow and unused makes no sense. Hiula almost laughed internally. The Fundo Rei (who was called... Gustavo? Gidoen- no no, that was the old Zhentannan ruler) had certainly chosen his words well, speaking with double meanings. Or he had gotten extremely lucky "That would be very kind of you, my friend," she replied, and offered an arm for him to take, "For one so experienced of the gardens to show me around. Maybe we'll both find said flower as we walk together."

Kalus was silent for a few minutes after the entry of the Xin Kun delegation. After hearing some of the dialogue, and having mulled over events so far, he spoke up again.
"To my knowledge, while I have heard the Dominion are here, and heard that Sheol, Khal'Aldul and Yssa have also sent at least someone, though I haven't seen them. As they are not here, it appears they would not be interested in any southern solidarity. Yssa have always stayed out, due to its animosity with Sheol. Sheol have always joined, but have used it to launch northern campaigns. I will be honest, Khada'Aldul have always respected it to the letter, and I am unsure if the Dominion was even a presence at the last signing, and they are by all reports moving for peace.
But their lack of presence is still a factor. All here want a defence pact, so I propose we follow the Fundo Rei's suggestion, and agree a defensive pact between us all. We might also want to agree to economic and religious rules as was in the previous pacts, so we don't actively weaken each other. Possibly the greatest question though is how long do we want this to last? Do we go for a set amount of years, or for when the Khada-Sheol pact fails?"

A large, three masted ship flying the colors of Khada'Aldul pulls into the docks and lowers a gangplank. Several servants wearing blue and gold uniforms run off the ship and two of them throw themselves prostrate on the ground as the other two pull out small horns and blow on them as Tiridata Ala Reshiin, the Heavenly Sword, walks regally down the gangplank. He waves a hand at his servants and they stop blowing horns and stand up before retreating back onto the ship. Tiridata Ala Reshiin, the Heavenly Sword bows humbly and apologizes for being late to gathering to anyone who had happened to witness his arrival. If questioned about his lateness he merely said he was busy attending religious ceremonies required for becoming the new ruler of his people. Ala Reshiin frowned at the current negotiations "My friends, we are all civilized nations of the south, we do not squabble and wage petty wars like the barbarous heathens to the north" He spread his hands indicating the attending members "look at us, we talk of war as if it were an inevitability, we talk of defending ourselves from ourselves, let us not lose the peace lest we descend into chaos.

Mei respectfully responded as she gracefully picked up a teacup one of her attendants had left for her before the meeting, "There is difference between peace of the South and a pledge of mutual defense. We of Xin Kun do not fear the Sheolim as they have for the most part kept the peace with us, nor do we fear our close neighbours Gehenna or Zhentenna for they have proven time and again to hold naught but friendship for their southern neighbours. We would be more than happy to defend our fellows against senseless violence from the North or malcontents of the desert. Yet as we speak, war continues over a Shishiyan Holy Land to our Northwest and Zhen-Phen Estates provocation continues. We would continue to hold our peace among ourselves, however not all are looking to a bloodless future whether intentional or not and it is the wars and the misuse of peace in the south to harry others of which we worry, not just the Sheolim or our neighbours. It is regretful, but these are the decisions that have been made and it is not unreasonable to then seek the support of friends, I think."

So, I had made the assumption Khada'Adul wasn't here because it's getting late in the round and by my perception of time there's been some time for Captain Flumph to have posted if they wanted to attend. My bad! I wanted to help drive negotiations forward.

If Khada have always been there, though, Mei would have said much less, more like below.

Idk what to do about this, Mei is not in a place where she could openly criticize Khada like that in front of Khada. Is it even possible to consider that at this point? I wouldn't want to make a trend of ticking off powerful entities at conferences because I'm silly ooc, but if it can't be helped then so be it.

Gustavo relished her company, and spent the next hour or so showing her the various gardens and ponds. He spoke of how the Ilhueso valued beauty as well as practicality. Walking through a series of raised bed, he spoke of how the herb garden provided medicinals to the academy. Several flowering trees, now heady with perfume, would produce fruit later in the season. With each observation, he gently attempted to get to know the woman better. Yet, there was little hint of guile or subterfuge. His double entendre's were clearly self-aware and done for humor.

"A long-term alliance may be problematic. The Gilde-masters of the Gilde Traficante speak of trouble brewing in the Elven lands, and strife within the Sun Cult. But a decade at least would be prudent. Otherwise it would seem all too temporary. Perhaps, with another decade of rulership, the Zhen might become less aggressive.
I would agree to trade and religious concessions as well- essentially asking for permission before engaging in any new activities."

Hannibal walked slowly toward King Kalus, beckoning him with a hand filled with rings, please walk with me. The two strolled among the finely manicured hedges of the Escarpa, not far from the other attendees. "Kalus, while I have treasured my time as King of Baalbek, I don't want to die as king. To that end I need to make sure I address the issue of Alade. As our realms explore and expand into the craggy sands, do you think the south is prepared for the unknown. "

'Kalus' replied to Hannibal gingerly. "My friend, you know that...' he glanced around. "Good the cameras are off." 'Kalus' suddenly let out a sigh of relief. "All this reenactment is hard work. Its a pity that the producers had to cut so much content just to get this online."

'Kauls' leaned in. "By the way, did you hear their not bothering with covering anything after the battle of freedom? Apparently, they don't care much about it. So much for a coverage of the age of Empires, Wei hadn't even come in yet, and no Empire has even been formed..."

"I also heard they're using the money to fund some fantasy show about intrigue and conquest. Ha! Let me tell you this much. There is enough intrigue, craziness and war in actual history than anything they can come up with!"

"Emperor Aventine. Welcome." The Fundo Rei smiled warmly. But the warmth was clearly feigned. "Welcome to the Regatta. I hope you enjoy the events and the atmosphere. ."

"As far as the coal mines to which you refer, allowing a precious resource to lay fallow and unused makes no sense. I unserstand your people favor strength and political ties, but the needs of the populace are equally important in the eyes of the Ilhueso. Opening up their trade with us is clearly profitable and beneficial to all."

"Let me make something perfectly clear: I want nothing to do with your pretense, and clearly neither do you, so I recommend you drop it."

"The markets you have dominated with your economic strong-arming, legal and dubiously benevolent or otherwise, are ones which benefited the Dragonborn people, and them alone, as they have always done in the manner which is traditional. It is not your place to tell us what is best for us. But I am not here to debate irrelevant trade philosophies. You have yet to answer my question: What do you want from the Dragonborn Dominion? If that is something you wish to discuss in private, we may do so. But I will have my answer, and now, or you will not have what you want from me."

IF the Fundo Rei was affronted, he hid it well. In fact, he was determinedly nonplussed at the outburst. Instead, he replied cooly and with great deliberation. "We have always been fair, we have always been honest. The Ilhueso want peace. The Ilhueso demand honesty. You people prize neither. Sheol seems to prize neither. When both sides agree to a peaceful settlement, then we will listen to their trade issues. Until then, you cannot be trusted with the richness of your lands."

He kept up his calm, cool demeanor, but his words became harsh. "There will be peace. If needed, I will seize your Jaunder gold assets, and block every attempt to acquire metals you try. I will use that lack of resource to expose your lack of leadership to your people. I will do the same in Karich to Sheol, blocking wood shipments to those lands. I would prefer you resolve this without my involvement. But acquiring a coal asset in your lands does make me an interested party."

"Yeah, I know. It's a bit silly, but they don't have much of a choice. All the talent left, and the other show's got way higher ratings, sad as it is," responded "Bërdo" from his seat just off camera. "And could they have tried a bit harder to be historically accurate? I'm fairly certain 'Bërdo Seaspray' never existed, never learned about him in school, I'm not even sure how to pronounce the name."

"Damnit I'm a classically trained actor, reading all this history to get my depiction perfect, and for what??!!! Well I suppose its for the best, I hear that other show is phenomenal. Anyone want to get lunch in the studio cafe after this, I'm pretty hungry?"

EDit It is now my head cannon that EMPIRE3 is a show, ala Game of thrones, and IC all characters are simply actors.

"12 episodes, one miserable season. Barely time to really get into the character's mindset! I mean, Gustavo was in his prime, going to marry a caligonian princess. After that, it was the trade empire and going the whole "Godfather route"." The man griped.

He lapsed into a very bad imitation, "You come to me, during my regatta, and ask me for a favor. This, I will do. But one day, I will ask you for a favor in return. An offer you cannot refuse." Then he laughed.
