SDF, nobody actually thinks anyone else can drive. Seriously, just pay attention sometime. :smallsigh:

Mistakes I can handle, and tolerate easily...If I didn't, I wouldn't allow myself on the road (just got a stick two weeks ago, still getting the hang of it). It's the people that drive centered on the double yellow lines, going 20 mph under the speed limit, and pulling out infront of me so that I have to slam on the brakes to slow down in time that I get mad at.

Most people can drive, but somehow you always run into the idiots on the road.

Vonriel
2007-08-10, 09:22 AM
Oh, but Jack, you forgot about the people who think they can merge onto an interstate where people are going an average of 70 MPH while at 45 MPH. That's not a mistake, that's just.. I dunno what that is, but it's annoying.

Do you consider Washington, D.C. the south, too? Because.. *shudder*

Washington DC is near Mason Dixon line. It also is bordered by Virginia, and according to a survey, more people from Viriginia feel they are part of "The South" than any other state. So yeah, it's partially the South, and partially the East Coast, which is a bad mix.

But yeah, in DC you have a mix of a bunch of different driving styles, on top of cramped inner city on-ramps that are designed for people to merge into traffic going 55. Which is bound to make hellish driving conditions.

Vonriel
2007-08-10, 10:21 AM
I see. Ok then, yeah, it might be the south. But wait! What about Detroit? I hear traffic there is horrible.

Thes Hunter

I see. Ok then, yeah, it might be the south. But wait! What about Detroit? I hear traffic there is horrible.

That's because we have people who drop bricks off of overpasses, and an aging infrastructure that hasn't been taken care of, and an auto industry that doesn't believe in public transportation, and on-ramps that are too short even if traffic is driving at 55 miles an hour to merge, but us Michigan drivers believe the speed limit is something to obtain on our way up to ninety.

But, DC traffic is worse, by far, far, far.

But Cincinnati on-ramps are the worst (in my experience), but then again, I swear they let goats be their city planners.

All I can remember of DC traffic is that "a good day" consists of traffic crawling along at 10 miles per hour. A bad day.. well.. you don't ever wanna be in DC on a bad day of traffic. :smalltongue:

DC and LA are the two worst in the country. I saw a report recently giving a huge number of hours wasted in commute time for DC.

New York did it right, they put the public transport infrastructure in before they grew all sprawling.

But if you as a city sprawl before you do HUGE public transport efforts, than your peoples will only give more of their money to the oil companies, and their time being dazzled by the beautious landscape of the gridlocked interstate.

On "CarTalk" when my family was living just outside of Los Angeles, I remember a guy called in from LA saying that he didn't own a car and biked around the city, and should he buy a car? he'd already been hit once. And the guys were like, "No, go for it - and we'll send your mother flowers if somebody runs you over. You must be the only guy in that whole city who doesn't have a car."

Probably true. It's against the law to build a house without a two-car garage.

Ha! Statistics!

Keep in mind that the average volume of people being moved will have increased substantially.

Furthermore, the amount of...horse fertilization...has been nearly zeroed (though admitedly replaced by pollutants of a different nature).

I don't live in Montreal. Thank God. I've been there twice, and I nearly got killed by cars countless times. Even though I spent most of the time in rural areas where there aren't a lot of cars. I don't know what's wrong with them - maybe hearing Quebecois-accented French all day drives everyone insane?

I can't comment on Toronto, but yes, Montreal drivers speed up if anything's in their path, whether the thing in their path is a pedestrian, a traffic barrier, a moose, another car, a tree, a lake, etc.

I agree with this fellow. It's why I rarely drive anywhere in Boston. The only Boston driving I do is driving under the death-trap Big Dig tunnel to get north of the city. Oh, and our population decrease has more to do with the price of living in this state, than anything, in my opinion. heh.

No! That's ridiculous! Torontonians stop for pedestrians. Really. I mean, they have those Remingtons for a reason. And Montrealers don't speed up. I mean, they're not watching the road, how would they know when to do it? They just put their foot on the gas and lie back, get a good book, argue with significant others, you know.

I've never heard of it getting totally cleaned off, but they do try every once in a while. Apparently the library archives have paint chips that show hundreds of layers of paint. Personally I have a large chip that shows multitudes of layers. I was surprised to find that some were still wet. :smalleek: It looks so different in original photographs. Geometry? Now you're starting your first steps onto true math, as opposed to arithmetic. Expect a lot of formal proofs and other lengthy busywork. There's a reason your former math teachers were (or should have been) drilling the "Show your work" routine into you.

Wow. What an interesting day.

Last night ER and I were were lucky enough to play some D&D with Adanedhel9's gaming group. (I play a Paladin, and ER plays (surprise!) a rogue.)

ER and I got home from playing D&D at around 12:30 or and didn't finally wind down until 1:30 AM.

At 3:15 I woke up to a lot of lightning, severe gusts, and thunder. Disoriented, and for some reason thinking someone might be in the house with us, I walked around the house checking the doors. As I looked out our back deck - I noticed our grill (weighs 250 lbs.?) pushed all the way over to the railing. I thought, 'That's unusual...' and head back to bed.

At 8:15 there was frantic knocking and the doorbell ringing. Turns out we had a big storm (http://www.twincities.com/allheadlines/ci_6602029?source=rv) last night and there was a tree knocked down and across the driveway!

All together we lost 5 trees in our yard - large trees, like trees Wood Elves would live in. Three Evergreens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen) were shorn off, one shrub was uprooted, the tree that split in half dropping a three foot diameter trunk across the driveway, and a final one in the backyard spitting in half as well.

We've spent the majority of the day clearing out the driveway - so we can leave for things like food - and making the yard safe for or son William to run around in.

Here's the view of our front house from the street... (http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/Jdebelly/Tree5.jpg)

It's gone now thanks to the friendly neighborhood landscapers and their wood chipper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_chipper).

Currently, I'm in Toronto in a vacation. It's such a change! I mean, a province where the drivers don't actively kill you! Where the only thing thick enough to cut is the smog, rather than the assorted malice and spite of a thousand thousand Frenchmen. Where the used bookstored sell use books, instead of the used stores that have been chewed up and spit out in the grinding advance of capitalism and Indigo. Fun.

Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open up hosts with notepad. Then add "0.0.0.0 rad.msn.com" to the end of it.

I got this from a site, I can't find the link otherwise I'd have given that. Then restart msn and enjoy it ad free. There's two "hosts" files, it's the one that's an iCalendar file, it's that one.

The hosts file is simple and safe to modify in a plain text editor like notepad. I do it all the time for work related issues (ie. if the DNS servers haven't updated yet). I also did it when moving GiantITP to this server.

Don't use 0.0.0.0 unless you are running a personal webserver, use 127.0.0.1

:smalltongue: My MSN did that just for kicks while I was in China. I think the internet censorship didn't interact too well with the program. Half my messages wouldn't go through but it wouldn't TELL me when they did and when they didn't, so the two things I said more than anything were "Did you get that?" and "Umm...I don't think I got that." We ended up shortening to "dygt?" and "dgt" for the sake of our sanity.

At Thes' request (or at least, my twisted interpretation thereof), I am transplanting an elsewherely OT topic here:

Humanity, I hereby offer you 8.333333333 million nanodollars per soul.

Per an earlier inquiry, no. I will not be rounding up to the nearest cent.

((Furthermore, in a strictly OOC sense, this does not behave as a real world contract or agreement. The transfer of virtual soul properties to myself does not project upon my a requirement of caring for said souls. Dealing with purchased souls will be handled entirely at my discretion. Math wizards may realize that the amount of 8.333333333 million nanodollars is roughly identical to a dime a dozen. They are in error, in fact, the amount is slightly less than a dollar a dozen. Offer expires on the Witching Hour of a day arbitrarily chosen by myself which may or may not have already passed. Copyrights and Trademarks belong to their respective owners. All rights reserve. Surgeon General's Warning: Soul selling may result in misery and loss of your firstborn.))

Awww, man, you have to sell them personally? I was gonna sell my family... damn.

You're hallucinating.

There is no entry requiring the soul to have originally been yours. You merely require title to the soul.

My suggestion: Bake them cookies. Have a small paper insert in each reading "eating of this cookie indicates the willful transfer of the eater's soul to name here". This serves as an adequately legally binding contract.

It's one of the basics of soul acquisition they teach you in the Infernal Academy.

Oh, on that note...

*Hands out cookies*

I'd rather lock them in a dungeon without adequate food or water and torture them until they surrender deeds to their souls. Plus side? Then I kill them and get my inheritance!

I decided I awhile ago that I am never going to die. I'm gonna turn 21, and say 21 until an asteroid hits the Earth or something.

You should wait until you're 25, so your insurance rates go down and you can rent cars by yourself.

Rent cars from whom? Surely with an asteroid hitting there wouldn't be anyone to rent them from, or cars to rent.

Wow I can answer that question after only my first day of Spanish. In Spanish the double L is actually its own letter in the Spanish alphabet so I think both L's must be capitalized. Incidentally the double L in Spanish also makes a Y sound, so the real pronounciation of llama is yama.

Until christmas last year I drove a motorcycle, so in order to take my partner and friends on long trips down the coast while avoiding crowded holiday buses, I have had to rent cars. Of course I rented cars from the place in Brisbane called "Rent-a-Bomb" so I knew what I would be driving from the get-go.

Yeah. Just "sort of" to both statements. I'm too lazy right now to explain in an academic way (I'm a native spanish speaker).

I must say, Naruto is one of the many series (alongside DBZ and the later episodes of Inuyasha) that kills not only part of my interest in Anime but does it in for quite a few others, at least, for the people I know.

Get your action-oriented constipation sitcoms out of my anime!
Definately get your constant deus ex machina out of my anime ><!

The only animes I can stand either in is those that push it beyond the limits (Excel Saga, jungle wa itsumo hale nochi guu, etc.)

And yes, I did try to sit down and watch these series that I so openly dislike.

I agree with SweetRein. I turn on the TV and am immediately blasted with so many poorly-animated stereotypes that I have to pick them out of my teeth and hair. I swear, I keep finding angsty underdog protagonsists and too-young sex-objects stuck in my crevices when I shower. So I've just stopped watching.

That, and the thousand shortcuts used to cut down on production time in anime are all so ridiculously obvious that you can't even count them. Essentially, art quality and animation quality have become inversely proportional.

But the worst thing is that I so often fail to understand why so many presumably-grown would-be adults arguing, with fervor and even vehemence, about shows obviously meant to appeal only to children. Or teenage girls. Or virgins. Then I remember that that's all that seriously watches, and I go back to reading.

Wait, there's something about Kabuto. A girl I was dating didn't watch the show, saw a couple of chapters with Kabuto in them and said he was hot. This was before he was known to be a traitor (sorry if I spoiled someone, but I doubt there's anyone who watches Naruto who's seen less of it than I have).

Is it the gray hair? Is it the glasses? The slightly manlier built? The cool attitude?

@Yiel: Great job with the impersonating, I'm voting you for whatever acting category the come up with "in the playground" :p Also get well sooonn ^^

About anime, I don't think it's bad. There's crap, but I surprisingly can enjoy most of it, within the genres I like. Sometimes it's worse when it's trying to be serious and artsy and pretentious.

As for Naturo, it's actually pretty good, better than most people make it to be. It's not consistently good, but there are things that are very good. It's a classic example of genre that's pretty trodden and based on cliches...Some characters and plot developments are quite good for my taste. It's not my favorite, I started watching it to see what the fuss was all about, and i enjoy it. It's kinda overdramatic sometimes but meh.

Here in my city it's always parallel parking. And in Buenos Aires too, but there it's awfully complicated to find a parking space. So it's not a matter of not finding a spot, spots are always parallel to the sidewalk.

I have to say one of my more favorite fight scenes that I've seen has come from Naruto. It was in the tournament part, when Rock Lee and Garra were beating each other senseless. So, see, when you take away all the silly-stupid stuff that all too few people find entertaining, such as the title character, it's not so bad. I find that a lot of the kid's anime would be so much more awesome if they cranked that rating up to M, dropped the stupid character habits, and made it serious.

Edit: And, yes, perpendicular. There are angled parking spaces too, but those just lead to people pulling into them from the wrong way and pissing off everyone parked near them or passing by them.

Perpendicular? Hmmm...It depends on the space. It could be harder for me now that I think about it. It's all practice I guess.

The last time I watched my Naruto DVDs, I finished the saga that introduces Tsunade. I thought it was a very interesting character, with its flaws and complexities. Nowhere near a perfect or stereotyped character. I liked it. I didn't like the Zabuza bridge thing, for example. Personally I thought it was trite and over-emo.
