The Rules. You! Read these!

In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB one word posts should be spam everywhere. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* should also be considered spam. Quality of content trumps speed of response.
2. Ditch the "competition for control of the universe". It has ceased to be funny, and often branches out into little mock battles that fall into the spam definition laid out above. We've got a PbP section for fights, and even the Town has an arena, I believe.
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well.
4. Stop advertising other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please stop with single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Do not poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. No asking "What's the topic" or the ilk. This is *not* a conversation where you could've missed the begining, it's a forum where the current topic is nicely recorded for you. So read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details

:miko:Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :miko:

This thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. There is an IRC chat thingy (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12321) set up for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat. It's win/win/win!

And now for something completely different, A NEW THREAD!!!

Though I am not normally a Banterite, the following thought entered my head - and this seemed the place to say it:

Ego, that's the coolest gender ever. I wish my gender was a Chord.

No...tap-dancing has the opposite effect of the Boogie. While the Boogie blesses the thread and assures its prosperity, the tap-dance curses it and condemns it to rot at the bottom of Friendly Banter.

Tap dance enough, and you could bring the accursed bug back down on us, after it being absent for nearly 8 months! Do you want that? Do you?

@^: Not just any chord, but a minor 7th. Such a smooth, jazzy gender.

Yes, you can have my battleship. It's sunk. You'll have to retreive it from the deep. PM me for coordinates. Please enclose $3.99 for shipping and handling.

Also, speaking of chords, is anyone here familiar with the Flight of the Conchords? They are amazingly funny.

Roland St. Jude

I only had the one battleship, but I have a half-destroyed aircraft carrier you can get for a song (Lilac Wine, specifically).

FotC has a show on HBO that's quite good. It's a like a quirky musical sitcom made out of videos of their songs. It's all on YouTube. I'm too lazy to link them. There's about 7 eps worth so far.

Here. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=cZY7mSoZbCw) Pause it at 10s in.

Congrats EmeraldRose. Nice having 3 degrees to choose a carreer from or combining them to work your perfact job. After all that school though I would have taken a vacation. Actually that is exactly what I did. I just graduated with a BSN, and took a week off. And though I know where I am working (have to work for a hospital as they payed me back to go to school). I dont know in which department yet. Wanted the burn unit (go figure) but they dont have any openings. Probably work ICU.

I thought it was pretty funny at my graduation also. Here I am 1 of 2 guys in a class of 47 graduating nurses. I am 6'4" and 250+lbs, the other guy was short/average height and skinny. I am also shaved bald with a large goatee, look more like a hells angle biker then a nurse. The look of the 5'4" dean as she shook my hand and looked up at me was priceless. My father was laughing so hard after the graduation, he said that the photographer was even having trouble. He was turning his camera all different ways trying to fit the dean and I in the same picture.

First off, in the National Geographic list, except for the one about speaking a foreign language fluently, I can do all of those things. And actually, I'm about to go live in the Dominican Republic for two years, during which time I will hopefully become fluent in Spanish. Next, I would say most of if not all of my friends are the same as me. So yes, while a large majority of American youth might be stupid, those who will be leaders in business and politics are better informed about such matters. And honestly, does it really matter if a janitor knows whether or not Sudan is in Africa or Asia? The true failing in the system isn't in the teaching, but in the fact that most students don't car and don't try. Last, you can now imagine me typing the same America is better things I usually would, since I'm going to spare you guys and leave them out.

ZombieRockStar

Yeah, but the goal of education is hardly just to teach you what's applicable to your job, so yeah, it does matter if a Janitor knows where Sudan is.

The question is, where does this apathy come from that seems to be unique among Americans? And you can't just heap all of the blame on just one factor.

I'm curious, though. Why do these tests that focus on world understanding always use geography as their standard? Wouldn't knowledge of world history be a better indication of how well you understand the world outside your own country?

Hmm...good point, but I don't think that's the whole of it. You can know where a country is without knowing anything about it.

Well, my spoken French is very shaky, but I can read and write it well enough that I think I count, so I can easily do everything on that list (despite the fact that French isn't a foreign language).

Also, if you're focusing on world understanding, how does finding NY on a map count if you're American?

Well, my mother was getting great grades all around, except for geography. She had no grade beneath a 7 (1-10 scale, higher is better) on her Gymnasium (the most difficult secondary education you can get here) certificate, and that's only because she had dropped geography as soon as she could (It almost caused her to fail all of the years in which she had it)

Geography was one of my worst subjects as well (just after French), and I dropped it as soon as I could as well.

And with all the geography I've done, it isn't just the finding of places on a map.

It's when you get to Geology that it gets good...

Ah summer break, it's that thing that lasts for two weeks after my classes end next week.

I can't claim to be fluent in any foreign language (computer languages don't count :smalltongue: ) But I hope to have Arabic completely down by the time I'm done with my undergrad, and to have at least started French, which I want done by the time I finish gradschool. I remember my 7th grade geography book. Now, I was in the 7th grade in '98 but our geography book was written in '89. I will never forget the way they talked about the Berlin wall and how it may not come down in our lifetime. An Ironic statement making the book dated months after it was written. I often wondered why we had new math, science, and English textbooks, but not geography, the one subject that changes the most. Numbers are never going to change, I could use a math text written in the 60s, and unless it was some new zany theoretical stuff it wouldn't matter. I always went to private schools so I'm not sure how well I relate to the US public school system.

Nomrom
2007-08-05, 12:57 PM
Yeah, but the goal of education is hardly just to teach you what's applicable to your job, so yeah, it does matter if a Janitor knows where Sudan is.

Well, I agree with you that in high school, your education should cover information from every subject. However, in college I am opposed to the idea of having a curriculum composed of classes from all disciplines. I am studying as a chemical engineer. American history is not very important in my chosen work force. If it interests me, I'll study it on my own. If it doesn't, why should I be forced to take that and spend time studying it, when that time could be better utilized on subjects I will need to no to succeed in engineering. And while it may be true that a janitor should be able to find Sudan on a map, it won't affect his work at all. Also, the article is saying that we are unprepared for a global economy. What I was saying is that the people who need to worry about this, will probably be able to. A janitor doesn't need to worry about our global economy. A company head does, and is probably in the percentage of people who can.

The question is, where does this apathy come from that seems to be unique among Americans? And you can't just heap all of the blame on just one factor.

I have no idea where this apathy comes from. I find it kind of annoying and pathetic though. What annoys me the most about it, is that the most apathetic people tend to be the ones who complain the most. I know the whole problem isn't the laziness of students, but it is a major contributor. I probably know people from high school who couldn't answer these questions. However, we were at a good high school in one of the best school districts in the country. They most likely had teachers who taught them this stuff, but they either didn;t learn it or have forgotten it. Apathy is definitely a factor.

I'm curious, though. Why do these tests that focus on world understanding always use geography as their standard? Wouldn't knowledge of world history be a better indication of how well you understand the world outside your own country?

I have no idea about this one. I do have another question about the survey though. Where did they get the students from? Is it completely random from the whole country, or from certain areas. Because the country can't take the blame for the school system. Individual states do much better than other states do. As I said, I am in a very good school district. The one next to us, is the Houston school district. They are constantly in the news for messing something up or failing evaluations. Where you go makes a big difference.

You know, my brother and I used to memorize the state capitals and then quiz each other on them FOR FUN. It was always the same with history. For his 4th birthday, what he wanted more than anything was to go to the Gettysburg battlesite...and we were fortunate enough to live in PA at the time so we got to go.

That's history for me. Being there and seeing the place it happened. I couldn't tell you what day the battle was fought, but I know any number of facts, obscure and otherwise, about what happened....

So I love history. And geography. The two combined are part of why I like traveling so much - I've been to 36 states and 12 countries, driven from coast to coast twice. There's just something about that kind of experience that makes these places stick in your head.

But a lot of people here where I live have never left the state. It's really hard to connect with them sometimes....

Geography...meh. I've always been interested when I'm on site, but in a classroom, getting what amounts to rote memorization about other places I don't know anything about (Barring GNP and various statistics), I really find I couldn't care less. Math is fine, but I get bad marks because I'm good enough in it that I don't listen, don't study, but do manage to screw up and make stupid mistakes because it's too easy. Probably the most interesting course would be Science, because I'm bad enough it's a challenge but good enough that I don't succumb to numbing despair. Unfortunately, this year's science teacher sat us down, gave us busy work and did his email every single frickin' day out of the 180-odd we had. As far as I know, he doesn't have any actual friends, so I don't know who he's emailing...

And he may have, in fact, been thinking of New London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_London%2C_Connecticut) or maybe London, Ontario (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London%2C_Ontario), which is not near any coast, though near enough to a few shores.

Beh. I have a theory that all major stereotypical cities in the world (being New York, Paris, London and Tokyo...with perhaps the Sydney Opera House thrown in for good measure) are all the same city. Viewing certain movies (i.e. those with made-up cities or just "The Big City") has confirmed this. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get plane tickets to "The Big City." Despite having all those skyscrapers and tourist attractions, it must not have an international airport. :smallconfused:

Weird, stupid archetypical cities of the world. And you forgot LA, San Francisco and Rome. Maybe not so much Rome.

ZombieRockStar

Oh, forgot Venice too. Though that may just come from Babe: Pig in the City. LA only shows up because there's always a sign on a hill reminding the people of the city what city they live in...just in case they forgot.

CurlyKitGirl

Yeah! There's a 'city' on the back of Babe:Pig In The City that has a landmark from virtually any city you'd care to name. It looks very strange. Canals; Big Ben's Tower; Empire State Building and some others.

So you can mistake the LA or NYC or Rome or London or Paris skylines one for another? Naaaaaah! Not on your nelly mate, the local architecture's always distinct and different. Ditto the taste in skyscrapers. Ditto the road layout and the interaction built environment with parklands, planted trees, gardens, etc.

You could mistake Paris and Vienna maybe. Budapest, Cracow and Prague maybe. Ditto Luebeck, Bruges and Copenhagen. Ditto most cities in Germany. Most of the interchangeable skyscraper burgs in the Americas and Asia you can definitely chop and change at will. Eastern Bloc architecture has the same universally meretricious taint wherever it's thrown up.

Yep. Don't you know that you can draw an almost direct historical correlation between amount of laudanum, opiates and such consumed in the UK and the size of the British Empire? We set our greatest poets and thinkers to imagine an empire of the senses wherein the British could explore aspects of themselves they could not in the real world (ie: Britain). The result: the formless fog of protomatter that surrounds our isles was temporarily coalesced into the world beyond our borders.

On current topic...

I have dice that are oversized, to be about 300% normal size. I originally bought them so I wouldn't have to worry about my neice choking on them, then she proved she could get the little guys in her mouth anyway, so I keep them now because I can readily identify MY dice after a game.

I have the worst luck with dice. No matter what dice we use, I will never roll high. In the last campaign we played, I rolled a natural twenty on an attack once. That was against a golem, so I never got to critical with that character. I once went a session where the highest I rolled was an eleven, and the average was around a six.

Logic

Pun much ?

Unintentional, I assure you. I tend to type as I try to speak. Though I sometimes will start a sentence, decide halfway through it does not convey what I actually mean, pause, say a few more sylables of the first sentence, then begin speaking in a new sentence, which has all the same information the first one did, just to me, better organized.

I also speak in run on sentences more often than I would like.

The worst is in Risk when everybody is either rolling super high or super low. I once had a game where 3 6's was thrown three time in a row. It was countered by 2 6's, 1 6 and a five, and 2 more 6's.

I have thoroughly mediocre luck with dice. We played for months and I never rolled a twenty. Then, during the last session, when I wanted to roll low, I got two twenties. In the first case it meant that the insane cleric got lost in cave. The second caused him to fall off a cliff.

My luck with dice continues into risk too. I rarely play because it got so aggravating. I would often fight and lose three or four troops for every one I killed. It is really annoying playing people who obviously don't know what they're doing and losing anyways because you can't beat them in a fight, even with superior numbers.

I rolled abysmally today. We were playing the oots game, and I would generally work it so that I had to roll, say...a 2 or 3 or better (on a d12) in order to beat the monster. The number of 1 and 2s I rolled was just....uncanny. Like seriously 8 of them.

At one point, I knew I was rolling like this, so used a thing to let me roll twice, take the highest....I needed a 3. I rolled 2 2s.

Look, I'm trying to keep the explosions on the backburner, but you're not making it any easier. You're just tempting me to send the whole damn planet up in flames.

Where you been, Lucky? You know how hard it is to write up plans for world domination AND defend a pot of a gold? I just took a couple weeks off the forums so I could get everything under control.

The better question, Lucky, is why haven't you been on AIM? Hmm? HMM? I haven't seen you in ages!

If my friends committed seppuku because I wasn't on AIM, I would no longer have any living friends. Haven't been in in ages, and when I do get on I'm not on very long at all.

Saithis Bladewing
2007-08-06, 08:17 AM
It was not a cloud plane for Odin's sake, it was just a shadowy flame which hid the creature known as Saithis.

There was no plane involved, squiddy, and you know it. There was only a damn shadowy flame, a pair of eyes and a tiara. That's. It.

<Snausages> So, an E-flat, a G-flat, and a B-flat walk into a bar.
<Snausages> And the bartender says,
<Snausages> "I'm sorry, we don't serve minors."
<Myke> That struck a chord.
<Snausages> Careful with those puns, you'll get in treble.
<Myke> But they're key to my humour.
<Myke> And very noteworthy.

Such carefully orchestrated puns, it must have taken a great deal of effort to compose oneself in order to tell them.

CurlyKitGirl
2007-08-06, 08:26 AM
True. But I bet that if you nipped around the Bach of his house, found the cellar door, turned the Handel and looked inside you would find monkeys and Death-clones typing out the puns as fast as the original Death could produce them.

You mean it wasn't a piñata?

No, but the point is certainly up to interpretation. Within the clouds of credulity, I would have had you believe that it was a brief glimpse into a strange otherworld dimension. A small rift in space out of which was looking a purple eye.

An interesting bit of geometrical art would also have been an acceptable answer.

So would "Side-scroller enemy"
